Georgia’s perspective on SECCG

There is a lot that happens in a football game and it is easy to try and point your finger at reasons for shortcomings. It is what is in everyone's nature to do after a loss.

I will say that despite the committee getting the final 4 teams correct, they opened up a huge can of worms by taking injuries into account in my opinion. Georgia had injuries everywhere, and injuries are a part of college football... but* those players would have been healthy for playoffs in 4 weeks. I am not saying that Georgia should have been in playoffs, I am using an example of the can of worms opened up by using injuries to determine team standings.

As far as the game goes from a Georgia fan, there were several things that happened, not just one.

Of course I would have liked to have seen the catch reviewed. It would have been interesting I think and could have gone either way. Why do I say this? Think about a play where a receiver catches a ball, goes to turn up field, and the ball is knocked loose. They look for a duration of control, not an instance of control, or a *football move* to have taken place. Outcome could have stayed the same, I just wanted to see it reviewed

On defense, I told those on this board that the interior defensive line was weak compared to years past... Alabama fully exploited that. I am not sure who was in charge of keeping up with Bond, but they were playing in the dirt instead of watching Bond.

On offense, a boneheaded turnover didn't help. A penalty to push a field goal back didn't help either. Alabama defense did an excellent job at adjusting after Georgia's first drive. I wish yall still had pete golding lol

Overall I am not upset as a Georgia fan. We saw two excellent programs capable of playing 4 quarters of football go at it. I am more appreciative than I am upset at going 44-2 over 3 years. Those two losses though... Alabama... Saban is still Kirbys daddy.

Also....Kirby and Bobo need to sit down and think about some things, primarily in QB. I believe the days of a pro style QB are nearly gone without elite receiver talent. A dual threat gives an OC more options and limits a DC. Georgia lost a defender or two just because they were keeping eyes on Milroe. Georgia also had to play a lot of zone, giving receivers room, all so they could keep eyes on Milroe.

National Champions
2022: Dual Threat
2021: Dual-threat
2020: pocket passer, elite receivers
2019: dual threat
2018: Dual Threat
2017: Jalen hurts, dual threat... Tua, somewhat dual threat
2016: dual threat
2015: dual threat
Great post. KCS is 47 YO. He’s essentially Saban in waiting, and Dawgs fans have decades of championship football to look forward to. We’ll tease you guys about being the modern day Clemson, but we know that’s not the reality.

In terms of Saban v Smart in the years to come. Kirby spent the last 8 years installing Saban’s system (System 1.0) in Athens. Saban spent the last 8 years making subtle refinements to his system. It’s now System 2.0. The differences are subtle but cumulatively they give CNS a material edge. As more time passes, Kirby will refine System 1.0 into his own system, and eventually Saban will retire. This rivalry will only strengthen Georgia in the coming decades because iron sharpens iron. Stetson had 10 rushing touchdowns last year, I consider that dual threat

Yes, I consider Joe Burrow a dual threat, not to the extent of others... but the man could easily pick up first downs with his legs

I thought it was someone else in 2015.. so no on Jake Coker
I don’t think rushing touchdowns defines a dual threat QB. Dual threat QBs force the opposing defense to modify their scheme/personal packages in anticipation of QB runs or Scrambles. For example, the team may assign a spy or call only outside blitz packages to contain the dual threat QB in the pocket. The primary advantage to dual threat QBs is how they influence the defensive play calling and personal packages on passing downs.

Okay, about the Bond catch... I'm glad they didn't review it. I've watched it a bunch and here's what I saw... He never lost control of the ball, but it could have been construed as being because the ground was helping him control it. If the officials saw it this way it might have been overturned. Again, I'm really glad they didn't stop to take an extended look at it because I have little faith that they'd have called it our way (see: Burton on the sideline).

I am aware that the SEC says it was reviewed on the fly. UGa folks are taking that report with a rather large grain of salt.

I also agree that I don't think it would have automatically meant a 7-point swing in the final score, either. Bama went a bit conservative with the lead, and they might have kept the pedal down if we had still been behind (or up by a smaller margin... whatever it would have been at that point).

IIRC every play is reviewed in real time by the SEC, they stop play only if they need more time to look at a play.

I also believe if they did an extended review they might have overturned it - they've reviewed and missed some pretty obvious calls this year (such as Burton / abuurn), so I'd rather not put it in their hands.

is this only for games from 2013? I wonder since the game has changed so much if this still has relevancy
Good question. This is used as an example to explain how analytics factor into situational coaching decisions. In practice, Athletic departments will have an analytics department that works with coaching staffs to develop custom analytic models. For example, a custom model may positively bias the Team’s current season stats over historical stats from all division 1 teams. The guy below appears to be in charge of this at Alabama Athletics.

Agree to disagree I guess. A dual threat QB is someone who can equally hurt you with running and throwing. The best example is Johnny Manziel. Bennett and Burrow don’t fit that description to me.

I understand, just a disagreement on definitions.

I view a dual threat as a QB who can run when needed, vs 50/50. Burrow could pick up 25 yards with his legs on a down if given that opportunity... Jake Fromm could not

Regarding Bennett, is he back with the Rams or is he still out on personal leave?

And was it the drinking that caused the absence?

I'm not a fan, but I hope the young man gets his life together whatever it is.

I thought if we got 2 scores ahead at any point we would win , and that's what happened. Aside from their opening drive there wasn't really a cheek clinching threat. We stayed a step ahead by getting multiple 2 score leads and winning the line of scrimmage. Honestly if we had gotten just 1 or 2 of those missed INTs, it well could have been a blow out.

Make no mistake about it-- despite the final stat sheet and final score, Bama outplayed them rather considerably.
