Was that when Hartselle was the county seat of Morgan County...or was it Somerville? :rolleye2:

Hey BamaJim,

I see you're in Athens. One of the best HS teams I ever saw was the Athens team back in the late 70's that featured Freddie Smith and Adolph Cosby! I know Smith went to au and had a pretty good career there. I went up to Athens to watch Fairfield play them in the first round of the 3A playoffs. Athens led 28 or 35 to nothing at haltime:eek2:

Jim Lovett was Fairfield's coach at that time and of course we were running the wishbone. It might as well had been the "fishbone" as Athens dominated from start to finish. :BigA:

Growing up and attending Decatur HS, it's hard for me to imagine Hartselle and Athens in higher classifications. They were automatic wins in the 50s...

1950's? Geeze, that was back when Athens was called the Aggies for God sakes. The team was made up of guys who had fought in WWII and picked cotton up until game time. Darn River Rats! ;)

Funny how time changes things.. When I went to Athens for the previously mentioned contest between the Eagles and the Tigers, I was shocked at how large their stadium was and the sheer number of players Athens dressed out. Of course only about 15 or 16 of the players actually played but it was impressive nonetheless.:)

Now, Jim...

they were already called the Golden Eagles, or maybe the Golden Bears or something like that. They were ahead of their time - they already had "fall break." Do I need to relate the rationale for it? :)

NYBAMA,

Man it's still the best!!!:biggrin2:

Going to the Hoover games is nothing less than an event! Whether it's home or away! Hoover has a target on it's back the size of..uhh something that would make a real big target..

Anyway every home and away game is packed full with supporters, foes and the just plain curious!

I promise to enjoy each game, halftime show, and trip to the concession stand (where my lovely Wife works hard like so many other Band Parents) for BOTH of us since you're so far from home!!:) :BigA:

That site must not include freshmen. The Hartselle site shows the 2006 student enrollment at 885. I trust the Hartselle site to be accurate. When I graduated, we had 860...

I think the way Alabama does their classification is by students who are capable of competing in athletics. Handicapped students are deducted along with students over the allowable age and certain others, I am not sure of all of the criteria. Piedmont dropped to 2A under the new classification system and shows an enrollment of 210. When I played, we were a large 3A or small 4A school depending on the year. The actual enrollment numbers right now are around 310 students so appearantly 100 are not eligible for athletic competition.

According to GreatSchools.net, Hoover has 2044 students, Spain Park 1319, and by comparison, Southlake Carroll has around 2400.

Skyline in Dallas has over 4000 students, as do Elsik, Westield, and Hastings in Houston. (there are many more around the state)

Cypress falls has well over 3000, as do Clear lake, Jerset Villiage, Langham Creek, Klein, and Cypress Ridge. (there are many, many more around the state)

You do not have enough fingers and toes to count schools over 2000 in Texas, and as for schools over 1000...think counting on blood cells. Lots of those.

Texas has 21,000,000 people compared to Alabama's 4.5. There are lots and lots of chilluns in school there.

Thanks Big Fan for numbers clarifications. The stats guys that derived numbers got most of them from state orgs/sites/schools. Understand there were allot of "if's" and "ands" from administrators, who in some cases factored "Passed Students" (failed), etc; permutations and combinations appeared endless. Also think of posibilities that exist regarding school couplings. Dallas/FTW metro has 3 to 5 5A QB's each week that pass over 300 yards/have 65-70% completion rates/and, 4-5 passing TDs Their team yardages consistently exceed 500. Some are within eyeshot of one another. Two of these teams are ranked in TX/SW top 3, and one is a consensus/perennial #1 nationally. Interesting, but that's TX 5A football and this thread is about "Air Mac". Best wishes to him and Roll Tide!

I did not graduate from fairfield. I went until my senior year (we moved) I would have graduated in '90. I ended up graduating from Minor Christian in 1990. But most of my early life was spent in Fairfield.

Well, as long as you spent some time in the 'field, you should live long and prosper.;) It had already changed quite a bit in my time because of the steel mills downsizing, etc. I actually grew up in the "legendary" Glen Oaks. :BigA:
