Hdtv - Espn

Brett, do you have the HDMI cable. If so, how would you compare it to the standard blue/green/red video cables?

I recently upgraded from monster component cables to HDMI. I have seen the most improvement on my regular (non HDTV) digital cable programs. HD is already fantastic even with just the component cables, you won't see much if any upgrade with HDMI.

However, I have noticed that my gaming experience with the Playstation 3 and the XBOX 360 is much better with HDMI connections.

Yesterday was the first day I used HDMI with the PS3, and I am completely blown away by the improvement over the component cables.(Yeah, I spent another $99 to hook up the PS3.) NCAA 08 was meant to be played using HDMI connections. Just awesome.

I had the same problem with ESPN-HD when I went HD a few years ago. Actually without knowing, I was not getting several HD channels. After going thru several calls with charter, a CSR was finnally able to unlock the channels I was missing. One thing I suggest to anyone hooking up HD is to make sure you are running a strong signal to the box. These days with so many rooms having cable, any split in the line brings down the signal. I went to Radio Shack and purchased an amplifier to boost the signal. Make sure it is a Bi-directional amp, where data can pass to and from. The one that I purchase has one in line, then four outputs. One output is dedicated to HDTV #1, one for HDTV #2, one for charter internet service, then one services all the rest of the TV's in the house(analog signal only). This helped tremendously with the HD and internet service.

I'm on Comcast, but I'm on some of the oldest coax in Huntsville. They've rewired my house twice, but two of the techs have been honest and told me that my signal at the street was weak, and, until they rewired the upstream, they'd done all they could do. I have two HD sets. One is a Panasonic plasma set, big, which is seldom watched, except on special occasions. The workhorse is a 32" Toshiba LCD. Both are lousy on non-HD channels. If HDMI would improve the non-HD performance, I'd spring for it in a second. LF broadcasts are almost unwatchable, except on our analog CRTs...

This is my 3rd year of having HDTV b/c I'm a first adopter ;). In fact, it was my wife who insisted on getting the HDTV 3 years ago just for watching college football (Yes, I'm a very lucky guy, too!)

What you say is correct. I would watch Auburn State vs Florida Military Institute if it were in HD :)

Thank you for that post. I've been tightening the screws on my wife for about three years about a HDTV. Any more ammo you guys could give me that I could read aloud to her? :D

if you don't me asking, where in H'ville are you? My folks are down off Weatherly and Bailey Cove, but not in the newer sections. They probably have the old junk, too; not that my pops would ever spring for HD!

I've got a pretty good wife, too. It was her idea to get an HDTV as our big gift to each other this past Christmas. She's a big football fan and also a huge movie fan with large DVD collection. No only that, she also likes to play the X-Box 360. She bought me a 360 for our anniversary last year and I told her that I guess I would keep her another year. :p_smile:

As far as the HDTV, I got a great deal on a Samsung 42" 1080p LCD. We went LCD because of video gaming, so it's not as great as a Plasma would be for watching sports, but I'm not complaining about it. The grass tends to have the "screen door effect" especially on the artificial fields, but close-ups are great. I did a little research on the net before this football season and changed the setting on my digital cable box from 1080i to 720p because the "progressive" technology is supposed to be better for fast action like sports. Most all HD content is broadcast in 720p anyway, so I made the change to my box. So far, I think it looks better than upconverting to 1080i.

I have no experience with this product, but the reviews seem positive, and it may help more than a new cable if the problem is your signal.

Several of the reviewers specifically mention Comcast.

Down here with Bright House as the service provider, to get ESPN in HD it is an extra package that you have to buy on top of your normal HD service. Could that be your problem with ESPNHD not coming in good?

Salespeople swear that paying for the high dollar cables will make a huge difference. In my opinion it doen't really.

I upgraded from a basic componenet (red, blue, green) cable set to the most expensive HDMI Monster cable. After scanning all my HD channels I decided that component looked better, then got a refund on the HDMI.

Also, if you're a Charter user they have a live chat service on their website, which for me has limited my chats with Indian operators that confuse our version of "football" with soccer.

I'm not sure who you're asking, but I know that ESPN HD is part of a digital cable sports package on Charter in Hoover that is in addition to normal HD.

However, it's not as simple as being subscribed to it. The Charter folks also have to do something to the receiver for it to work, even if you're signed up and paying.

I love my DirecTV HD. The quality is good on all channels.

The first game I watched in Color was back in the 60's when Bama played Texas in the Orange bowl (I think) and Namath was stopped on the 1 yard line. My neighbor owned a TV store and had one so we all went to his house to watch. My Dad didn't get color until after I went off to college.

I was asking whoever it was that was all excited about his new set up but it isn't working properly, the original poster I think. I was just too lazy to scroll back and quote him. Sorry. In reality though, all you should have to do is call them and they "flip the switch" to turn on whatever services you subscribe to. If that aint working I only stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night.
;)

Yeah, that's what I would expect too, but my DVR replacement wouldn't get ESPN HD until the tech came back out and messed with the box. Maybe he just had to recite a serial number or something to someone at Charter, but it wasn't something they would have me do over the phone.
