About 60% of the posters on here stated and cautioned everyone all summer long to have patience and to not expect a lot from this team due to depth issues and so on.

Those same, along with others, said that of the first 7 games the toughest game would be S. Carolina and Arkansas. Even some have stated that they are really worried about the S. Carolina game.

Most believed that the Tide would end up at the end of the season around 6-5 plus or minus 1.

I personally believed we would end up 7-4 to 8-3. Vegas believed 7-4.

Fast forward to Oct 6th. We are 3-2, like most have stated. We have lost our starting QB in game 3. We are playing well on defense, but the offense is having their problems, which most attribute to the loss of croyle.

So my question is this: Why in the heck are you whining and complaining when the majority saw this coming a mile away? Are we not on course with everyone's prediction? I don't understand!

Here's how I draw my conclusion:

1. You stated that this would be a tough year and 6-5 would be a great year if we got there and now that your prophecy is coming true you are livid because you demand better. Go figure.......

2. You stated the Tide would end up 11-0 and now they have let down your NC dreams and you want someone to pay for it. Amazing!.........

3. You run your mouth all week long to fellow coworkers about how the Tide will destroy the opponent that week and then whenb they lose you have to eat crow. Someone must pay for that and the natural course is to get a scapegoat. Maturity?...........

This reminds me about the 2001 season. Our defense wasn't getting pressure on the QB and the secondary was getting burned. I went to the UT game that year and had a discussion with a loyal fan from Nashville, where I currently reside. He commented on the poor play of the defense and how Fran had to fire someone to appease the fans. First off, that is the dumbest reason I have ever heard and hopefully that individual will not be voting in this year's presidential election. The fact is most are short sighted. They failed to see a defense that was in its first year. All they saw was what was happening on the field. What happened the next year? We had one of the top defenses in the nation. We routed UT at home, allowing only 1 offensive TD, we shutout LSU in Baton Rouge, etc.

The point is, if there is one ;) is to look at the big picture. Don't take the losses personal. I know I will not create reason in the majority of fans, but that goes without saying.

I am mad that we have lost 2 games. I don't want to lose anymore. I do see flashes of potential and hopefully the maturing of our young squad will prove me right. Losing Brodie hurt, but he is one man. Everyone must step up! And if they don't, it is not the coaches fault. They can only coach with what they have. It is the same argument to have some of your players become leaders on the field. That isn't something you can coach or command.

Looking forward we have Kentucky and then Southern Miss. I look to see Bama gain some type of new identity on offense, because that's what they need. They need to close the vacuum left from Brodie. That won't be an easy thing to do nor is it a given that is can be done. He meant a lot to this team.

I will be cheering for the Tide and hope we make it to a bowl. But if we don't, I will be disappointed only because I wanted them to do well because of what they have gone through in the past 4-5 years and I won't take it personally, BUT I know they will survive and come back strong next year. They have been without a bowl for two years and they didn't give up.

Perhaps the whining comes from the other 40%.

Post of the week, hands down.

I'm not saying the coaching couldn't improve or shouldn't improve, but I was here all last spring and summer, and if we were expected to be a 6-5 to 7-4 team, even with Brodie, then why all the excessive hand-wringing?

It's the simple fact that many people on this board can not accept losing. They will preach that they will be patient when it comes down to it, they will never be.

People are complaining simply because being an Alabama fan you hate to see Bama lose, period. Realistic expectations aside, Bama fans (myself included) just have a hard time accepting mediocre play or mediocre teams from the football program. Since Shula has been coach, we have lost 11 games in a year and a half. When I was a student at UA from 1990-1995 and I think we lost like 12 games in that 5 year time period. Success like that spoils you, but I think we all know that.

I think that what has many the most upset is not only that we lost the last two but that we looked so bad doing so. They were not Oklahoma type losses from last year. As bad as we looked however, I still think the biggest reason is BC not being in there. With BC, we could very well be looking at 5 & 0 right now and possibly a ranking in the 20s. We will never know. Lets just hope MG gets his act together fot KY.

Great Post!

I also believe that much of the disappointment is because we saw such great improvement over the first three games as compared to last year. The Ark. game was frustrating because our own mistakes lost the game and the SC game showed how far we must go to compete against the upper tier teams.

What most of us want (and expect) is to improve each week. Accomplish that and our record will take care of itself. I believe improvement will come - starting this week with a convincing win over KY!

The real problem was the early success of the team. We started 3-0 and a whole lot of fans started to believe that we had arrived at the station early. It would have been much less painful if the first 3 wins were close or if we had lost one of those games. Those wins reset the bar for alot of fans and created unrealistic expectations. No-one meant to feel that way - they (we) just got caught up in it all.

They dared to dream - and had those dreams dashed. Nobody's fault, team, coaches or fans. It just happened...

Let me say that I know that if we had Brody, we would be 5-0. Not a doubt. We were averging about 5 yards a carry at Ark without a passing Game. We held SC to 20 pts when there avg. feild position was the 39 (19 yards before the red zone!!!). Having said that, I think that people are not frustrated at the losses, but at being embarrassed. Things like putting in SP when you are only down ten. One touchdown and your only down a FG. This season has been unkind for MS because of BC. However, making rash dumb decisions and giving up in the 4th quarter is what has people mad, not losing.

One thing is for sure, frustration is 100% of the reason people are mad. However, two straight wins and things change drasticly. I am behind our team and our coach even though I felt like crying the last two Sat. The year is not over, and I still think we can and will make some noise.

PLEASE relabel/retitle your post!

So that everyone will be more apt to read it! Make it something like "MUST read...all Tide fans" or something. The Mod's may do this, cuz I think your post is the most succint, helpful summary of everything we need to consider at this time...

Thanks for your thoughts!

There are most definately problems with this year's team, and all of which can be attributed to the coaching carousel and the NCAA sanctions. There will be problems next year as well. In reality, we will start to rise out of this funk year after next.

It's great to hope for lucky breaks and go undefeated when we all know we facing a 6-5ish season, but reality does need to set in. :)

The reality is: Alabama is a Championship program, but even the best of the best are laid low on occassion. What seperates us from the others is that being down is an exception to our rule, while it is the norm to other members of the SEC, and Nationwide. :)

QUOTE of the year, Wisten...! Good one! I think you should add that one to your signature!

Ditto the excellent post, The Tide.

I agree that most of the logical Bama fans I know, myself included, expected this 2004 team to pull off a minimum 7 wins before the start of the season and go to a lower tier bowl. We don't really have a real tough schedule this year compared to years past. Seven wins seemed like a cakewalk in August with everyone healthy. Expectations got bigger after 3 straight wins, despite them being against lower quality opposition. Now that we are w/o our starting QB and going on a 2 game losing streak, I think reality has set into the logical Bama fan. We are left scratching our heads wondering if we will be lucky enough to even get bowl eligible. It's a legit worry and you would like to have reassurance that the coaching staff can stop the bleeding despite all the problems we have been through. However, many fans don't feel reassured after watching 2 games where poor playcalling, turnovers, and penalties cost us 2 games against teams that we were probably more talented at every position. That won't be the case against teams like UT, LSU, and Auburn. I think the most vocal of the gloom and doomers are worried that the worst is yet to come and our coaching staff doesn't know how to fix it. Personally, I still have faith. It's one game at a time starting in Lexington, KY on Saturday.
