Henry Ruggs III involved in serious car accident (Update: To be charged with DUI resulting in death)

In my experience in defense work, 3-10 is a normal sentence for a first offender , with this type of conviction. I’ve seen longer and believe it or not shorter sentences. And while not knowing Nevada law, I can’t imagine any scenario where there is no credit for time served.
The same article I referenced earlier about the BAC also said no credit for time served. That stood out because it's so common to see that you do get that credit. I need to find the article now that I've referenced it twice.

Just me, but I wouldn’t have skipped work and flown across the country for that. I’m not condemning Smith but this isn’t the best look.
Good times and bad. Not like he was condoning it. Showing support for your brother when he’s up against it, shows character

I don't give a (fill in the blank) about what he does with his life now. He killed a woman (and her dog) in one of the worst ways possible. I just hope he never harms anyone else again.

do you think he should have gotten life in prison? death penalty? what happened was just awful and he has to live with that further rest of his life and now 3-10 years of it will be in a place that you cannot possibly imagine how bad it will be. prison is not exactly paradise. he will probably have to do some pretty awful things to survive. he could even be killed while serving time. will that be enough?

He brought whatever he faces upon himself.

He will pay his debt to society and that will be that.

That doesn't mean I will be by his side cheering for him.

I don't wish any ill upon him - I just don't care one iota about whether he has any success from here on out.

His victim will never have a chance because he stole that from her.

so if this were someone close to you, would you just distance yourself from him?

It would depend on the situation. I might reach out to him telling we’re still friends but not go to a court hearing. But I’m not an NFL player subject to public scrutiny over an issue like this.

What I heard on the news this morning is he gets credit for the 3 days he spent in jail after his arrest but not the 21 months of house arrest.

Too bad it took a death for Ruggs to learn the DUI lesson.

I said it before on this thread

My friends and I loved Ruggs in 2017 because he scored a TD almost every time he caught a pass.
We would Joke that he was the luckiest guy in football.
I am cringing pretty hard at those comments right about now.

I know I'm stretching this thread a bit, but as a society we simply MUST stop traumatizing people in jail for them to come out even more harmed than they went into prison. I'm not advocating for Club Fed, but certainly most of the adults in jail have suffered from some serious trauma in the past, and the prison system we have ejects far too many people out with even more trauma and often no future opportunities that won't leave them struggling or committing more crimes.

One day we must really work toward having a real rehabilitation system instead of an incarceration and additional trauma system.

Prison should be at least as hard as being in the Military.
Uniforms, get up, exercise, discipline, teamwork...education....
No drugs, no gangs, no internal violence....

We've let them deteriorate into anarchy.....

Ironically, most (and maybe you, maybe not) are blaming him for the result.
Because had he just been arrested for driving like a lunatic, but no one hurt, he'd likely still be playing, and we likely would all still be fans.

So, for most who take this stance, it's because of the outcome -- but not completely because of the action. Because we forgive drunk driving.....we actually praise folks who figure out they have a problem and are willing to fix it. But, because his actions resulted in death - it's different.

Not sure if this is a like/dont like take -- I think it just - is.

Of course outcomes matter.

Or we wouldn't watch ballgames so intently and there'd be no need for this forum.

And attempted murder would have the same punishment as murder in the first.

So unsurprisingly it is different when the outcome is death and that we think of the crime as being worse than if the outcome was not death.

Because what actually happened in this case is much worse than any scenario of what "could have happened, but didn't". It's easier to forgive the latter than the former. -and I see no irony in that.

We only really care about drunk driving when someone dies. Regardless of what we say

the irony is in the fact that we put all of our emotional response into the outcome.

Whenever the outcome is more or less a result of chance. All of the control, is in the act itself

But if, as a society, we punished the act more severely, then the chance part goes way down, or disappears altogether.

Rock Stars have sex with minors, Presidents steal, Athletes gamble and drive their cars too fast.

And for every one of them that got off with barely a slap, have as much to do with Ruggs feeling invincible enough to put other people’s life at risk that night

we all say we are against drunk driving but only mean it when someone dies.
