IMO, Herbie doesn't have anyone to blame but himself. He's got an ego as big as the Grand Canyon. He stated after he left WJOX that, "I am WJOX." One day, someone at the station called him "the franchise" and he did all he could to encourage the nickname. Eventually, it was added to one of the show lead-ins.
He monopolizes air time, even when he has a big-time guest. Any interview consists of 75% Herb talking about why he's asking a question, whatever real or perceived expertise he has in the subject, 3 or 4 possible answers that the interviewee might give, which of the possible answers HE thinks the interviewee will give, and why. The 25% of the time left is available for the interviewee to shoe-horn in his answers if he's quick about it.
And, he's the world's greatest know-it-all. One thing you will never hear come out of his mouth is, "I don't know."
Years ago, I heard an interview that he did with Cornelius Bennett. He made this big production before Bennett came on about how he knew Bennett so well and knew that he hated the nickname "Biscuit". Then, he spent the entire interview calling him "Cornie". I've never heard that Bennett dislike "Biscuit", but (and, I'm sure somebody may correct me on this) I can't IMAGINE that he liked being called "Cornie".
And, as much as Herb likes to talk about how he was done wrong and WJOX didn't show him any loyalty, I didn't hear him raising a stink when Ben Cook got the ax at the station. Where was his loyalty to his long-time partner who knew much more about sports (outside of horse racing and boxing) than Herbie did. I'm not saying Herb should have threatened to quit to protect Ben, but I didn't see or hear anything from Herb that smelled of loyalty in that situation.
Personally, I think the whole thing is about him playing second fiddle to Finebaum when Finebaum comes to WJOX in a few months. He hates PF (as do a number of others at Citadel Broadcasting) and his ego couldn't handle passing PF in the hallway everyday knowing that he was demoted to make room for Paul. As things stand, Herb gets to pretend that he took the high road and stood on "principle".
