I'm predicting that the AJ and PS QB battle is going to be much, much closer than people think.

Now, to be completely honest, I highly doubt Bama will ever have a high flying offense with CNS handicapping us every game. We could have beat Auburn by 21 if we wouldn't have let off the gas in the second half, as I have heard that Mcelwain and CNS had different plans for the half. Not a bad thing, as our defense could use the rest and with a solid OL we can eat the clock, but when you have a struggling OL it turned out to be a kiss of death.

When you have an athletic wr like Julio (like Alshon Jeffry (sp)), you throw it to them when they are covered and give them a chance to beat a defender (which most of the times, IMO, they will do, even if well covered - AJ did it to Bama for a TD). I don't know how many times this year or last that has been done with Julio, and I haven't watched every play of every game, but I just think it should have been done more.

I agree completely. As good of stats as Julio has compiled, I feel like he was underutilized as a WR. I think it's in large part due to having such a risk-averse QB. McElroy just is not the type to throw a ball up for grabs. Julio will beat his man in the air 9/10 times, but if he looks covered, McElroy checks down. There are pro's and con's...

the game right now is too fast for AJ which is why id think he'd throw a good amount of INT's.. i still stand by my word that if we were to groom Sims as the starter he'd be hands down our best option. and even though he's not a scrambling QB he has good speed.

Before the '09 season I thought grooming Star Jackson to be the starter with the future ahead of him and the fact McElroy hadn't surpassed JPW given JPW's inconsistencies was our best bet.

Wrong I was! Time will tell but I bet with the talent both of them have which ever one wins out will be just fine. I actually look for an upgrade in the qb position and hope I am not wrong this time!:biggrin:

I remember 2009 and 1992 mind you am am forever grateful to Jay B. and GMAC for the memories that hang on my wall, but for once I'd love to see us have a total stud (one that can stay healthy unlike Brodie) at QB- Barker, Kitchens,Watts, even Zow, JPW, Greg- Love and respect them all- but want a Stafford (without the picks) Bradford, Aaron Rodgers type one of these years. I know our QB tradition has not been built on Dan Marino/Drew Brees types, but it would be fun to see 3-4 years of a QB like that with a Julio type receiver.

In the meantime I'll take an OL that can get 2-3 yards on 3rd and short.

I thought Arie was redshirting? It would make sense to me if he was especially with upperclassmen, national championship classmen, ahead of him already on the team. Plus having him and his brother playing 3 or 4 years together would be something I think he would be happy to wait for. But what do I know.

I think all those guys rumored to be unhappy should know the score about about playing time and I am sure they do. Sounds like some unhappy opposition fans rumors to me.

I'm not totally convinced that starting AJ will lead to more interceptions. We all were saying the exact same thing about Greg two years ago...

... and JPW before that and Brodie before that, when they were the #2 QB's

... imo, all backup QB's take more chances - the risk/reward factor seems to change as they go from backup to starter, for obvious reasons, i suppose

... the WR/QB relationship is built on timing, rhythm, and repetition - a lot of that gets done in the summer pass skels

... things also begin to settle once a QB becomes a 1 and takes all his reps with the 1's

... still with all the above, the risk/reward factor is different for each QB

... personally speaking, i would like to see that factor go up with the next QB - as some one mentioned earlier, greg tends to over analyze

... this topic is a perpetual one here on TF, only the names change, so i expect it to come around every year or so - nothing wrong with that - makes for good conversation

I don't have any inside information and I can't tell you something that others could not learn by observation (or reading Tidefans daily :wink, but I think AJ may be exactly what your asking for during a time when we should field some great teams during the next 2-3 years.

You mention Brodie...He was an amazing talent on some average teams. I love GMac (and will fondly remember his contributions to Bama History), but it was proven this year that he was not the type of quarterback to carry a team. His wheelhouse was to be qb on a team like '09 when he managed the Tide through a treacherous schedule to a NC.

Who knows if AJ is the one we've been looking for, but we might get to witness a young, hotshot quarterback who has a great team (and coaching staff) around him over the next 2-3 years.

A couple of things to remember about AJ that I believe tips the scales in his favor (at this point): AJ was one GMac injury away from losing his redshirt and playing in the SECCG or BCSCG in '09. That told me something about CNS's confidence in him. Second, he'll be intering his third year in the program with the same offense. He should know it (intellectually), we know he's got the physical tools, so it's just up to him being able to process the knowledge and skills into action. He's not as green as some think and remember GMac was basically at this same juncture in this offense at the time he took the reigns in '09. Third: We believe CNS sees alot of potential in him (remember the butt slap?).

BTW: yes to the OP's question, but, as others have said, look for more big time throws too. The two will go together!

My armchair QB guess is that they will keep the reigns around whichever QB plays with the mindset of playing not to lose will ultimately lead you to wins.

Our offensive line got absolutely whipped in the second half is what got us beat Saturday. I know it helped the barn getting the 2 D-lineman back from suspension the second half but man!

It was poor offensive line play combined with predictable play-calling combined with lack of desire combined with Auburn's half-time adjustments that lost. No one thing can be blamed.

I like McCarron. Can't wait to see him under center.
My take on great quarterbacks is 1. They've got to have the brain power to be able to be in control of the situation. 2. They have to have the physical skills; the arm and the feet. 3. They have the animal instincts and the power that have supreme confidence in ones self, and 4. That tireless, unrelenting passion for winning. That 3rd one is the one that I'm not sure that GMac possesses. I could be wrong. He had the first two and I think even the 4th, but I don't think he had the 3rd one.
QBs that have had these 4 are Joe Montana, Joe Namath, Dan Marino, John Elway, Kenny Stabler, Peyton Manning. There are more, but they are a rarity in the game. Does McCarron have the Big 4? We'll see won't we. Like I say, I like him. I admire him for his patience and I think he deserves his shot.

You know, you have to wonder if Mc, Julio and Hanks hadn't got knocked out of the game at the end if we couldn't have moved down the field at the end and still kicked a game winning field goal. Didn't look real good last year late either.

Another thing, those two fumbles we had in the first half were forced fumbles, great plays by their defense more than mistakes on our guys part. They won the game we didn't give it to them.

We need more mobility from our QB's that why I think PS will beat out AJ next season. We also need the O Line to play alot better.

you are 100% right!!!!! We have to be at least a threat to run. AJ does not give that. Philip does!!!!!!!
