Question: If you could erase one play in Alabama Football history...what would it be?

Seriously?!? He said one play...
Seriously you may want to re read my post. 1) I only chose one play, and 2) I was actually saying that the COMMON ones are most likely going to be either the Kick Six, either Clemson Pick Play, or some particular play in one of the last 3 Auburn losses. I said I would choose one outside of those for the sake of parity,

The Kick Six cost us BIG time!
When did I say it didn't?

Well, as 81 pointed out....it's kind of an "obvious" choice in some ways.

.
Its funny that two out three people got that out of reading my post. but anyways..

The problem, though, is that:
a) the game was tied, it's not like we were ahead
b) a non-returned field goal simply means overtime
c) the way we were playing, we would have lost anyway
d) even if we win - we had 2 more games to win to stake our claim
Personally I still stay the play makes the loss worse than actually losing to them. If we lose in overtime then probably very few people are actually referencing that game anymore.

I still think the Clemson 2016 loss is probably the worst loss in the last 30 years. 2013 Auburn I felt we lost after they scored that game tying touchdown. Really I had a horrible feeling when they beat Georgia the way they did.

The Tyrone Prothro injury against Florida in 2005 and really only for his sake. He deserved so much more from his career. I don’t know much it would have changed the ultimate result of the season. We nearly beat LSU as it was. Maybe we do beat them and Auburn. I can’t even remember who won the East that year. Georgia?

But like I said, it would really just be for Prothro.

Although the season was already lost, the Ed Scissum fumble in the ‘97 iron bowl is one that has always bothered me because it was a totally unnecessary, unforced error on our part.

Well, I'm not gonna put words in your mouth. I think I understood your intent. I'm actually surprised, though, it's not prominent at this point on this thread.

Well, I'll give you a parallel - it's like all those people in ecstasy when the Giants knocked off the Patriots at the end of the 2007 season. Although the Tyree catch didn't win it, it gives everyone a moment they recall. Chris Davis, well, it's the same thing. We were a roadblock in the way of Ohio State, Auburn, and Missouri - and the moment that play happened, they were all back in the title chase. Plus, given we were chasing three in a row, it gives them a lot of satisfaction to see us beat on a play that was much "planning for the unexpected" as you'll ever see. It was beating Saban with the kind of play he usually would be smart enough to develop.

You know, the Clemson loss (2016) didn't even "really" bother me from the standpoint of losing. We were on our heels the entire fourth quarter. It only hurt from the sense of - "this was the greatest team ever" by virtue of that insane defense. When they opted to go for it, I knew it was winner take all on the play. But it didn't even really hurt that much. When Stewart passed the ball on fourth down, I had close to the same feeling I had when Tua hit the winner.

As far as Auburn.....I've told this one here before, but here goes again. Back then I worked every Saturday, and I was in blood bank. We weren't usually too busy in there, so I'd follow the game on ESPN Gamecast so I wasn't watching it on the break room TV. Auburn took out to a huge lead, and I turned it off. I went into the break room to catch a few minutes as Georgia was rallying. I just assumed as a matter of course that we'd beat MSU that night, so this was for whether we won the SEC. I got in my car to leave work, and UGA had actually taken the lead. I was in a hurry to get home for our game. My brother (the news producer) calls me up and asks if I have the game on - I tell him I'm in the car, can he give me the play by play? So he does.

He tells me they're in 4th and 17, and my immediate thought is, "These idiots are going to make a first down and give me a heart attack." So he says, "Well, they're going for it all." And I'm thinking, "They REALLY ARE idiots." All of a sudden - calm as a soft breeze - he says, "Touchdown Auburn." I scream, "WHAAATT???!" At the time, I was on the Lake Lewisville Bridge doing 70 mph, and I damn near yanked the wheel to the right and off into the lake, it was so shocking.

Then he said this: "Just wait until you see it. The game was over and the Georgia guys collided, which kept the ball in the air."

Then we snoozed through the MSU game. I didn't say it here - but the game never had the right feel to me in the two weeks between the Prayer and the finale.

Then we left points on the field over and over. Hell, I would have been more shocked had we won once they tied it - same as you.

To me its like the Bill Buckner play or the Game 6 of the 85 WS. It ignored the context of the game. We didn't lose to Auburn because of a fluke play, we lost because we had our worst offensive coordinator since Rader handicapping one of our best quarterbacks and receivers of all time. I mean look at Cooper's stats vs Auburn.

1) Bill Buckner's error came after the game was tied (funny how few recall that); in fact, Bob Stanley would probably be the goat but for Bucker.

2) Don Denkinger blew the call, but - as someone who watched that series when it was played - the Cardinals were VERY lucky to not be down 3 games to 0 entering game four.

All anyone seems to think is those cost the team the game. (But Hrbek pulling Gant off the bag with Justice coming up? Who cares!)

Well we are talking about a club that really believes itself a top ten organization and a team that for years laughed at its instate rival and ends up losing to them. A lot of bills to pay, but no one wanting to own up to them

As for the Kick Six, anyone that watched that game knew if it went into overtime we probably lose by Gus making a two point conversion or our kicker doinking the upright. To be honest there are only two OT games in which I actually had a good feeling going into. The 2006 Ole Miss Game and 2014 LSU game. We were going against a bad Ed Orgeron team and a team that lost all of the momentum in the last minute of the game. All others are miracle wins or devastating losses IMO

Gotta go with the 2013 IB. But... instead of removing the actual run back of the missed FG, I'd back up about 3 minutes and remove that illegal play on 4th down from Nick Marshall to Sammy Coates that resulted in the game being tied at 28-28. The barn had at least two linemen down field on that play.

Since all the others I would pick have already been mentioned, I'll add this:

Ed Scissum holds on to that pass in the 1997 Iron Bowl. Not a good season for Bama but would have ruined a solid season for the Barn. Holding on to the pass would have allowed a Bama punt that would have made it more difficult for the Barn to get into field goal positions and we likely win.

Any loss to the Barn stinks and that one was particularly bad for at least one college sophomore.

If I were an LSU fan, I think the ending of the 2014 game would be worse. But I don’t remember where LSU was in the standings each year. We truly should have lost that ‘14 game.
We weren’t going anywhere in 14. Already had 2 sec losses. In 12, we just had the one loss to UF and would have won the west and been in the NC conversation but for the Bama loss. I gave up on Les after that game because he absolutely played it ultra conservative at the end, choosing to run instead of letting Mettenberger pass to Landry or Beckham.
