I’d be concerned about the condition of the beam that’s still there. It’s been open to the elements, and rainwater pH is 5.0-5.5. Not kind to steel.
My understanding is that the repair is only there to allow some traffic while an entire new span is made to replace the damaged section.

By a "new span" do you mean the entire steel structure that spans the river?

If yes, I wonder if an entire new bridge will be built adjacent to the M bridge.

By some traffic, does this mean cars only or trucks only? I can't think of any other way to limit traffic.

Personally, I would feel better if this were the ultimate plan.

ETA: Just saw your above post. Thanks.

If the ultimate cause is material failure, it's really hard to see another solution...

My wife and daughter got caught up in a 2 hour delay going thru Memphis earlier this week (traveling from Dallas). We normally take the southern bridge, which everything is being diverted to now, but they said they were also diverted thru a very bad residential area where cops were wearing bulletproof vests. The whole experience kinda spooked them out.

They were going to my wife's parents in the Decatur area. She's already asking what to do about coming back. I'm afraid she'll need to go to I-20, but it's significantly further than going thru Memphis.

My ex and son drove to NE MS yesterday and took 20 through LA. As she said, “If I’m gonna take 2 hours at the bridge anyway, why not just take the south route that’s 2 hours longer and less stress?”.

I pretty much told her the same thing. Rather be riding than sitting still any day!

For the first time, Arkansas and Tennessee Department of Transportation officials gave a timeline for repairs they say could stretch into July or even longer.

Buttigieg says this crisis is part of a nationwide problem.

Standing in front of the closed I-40 bridge with local politicians and state transportation officials by his side, Buttigieg said the federal government is lending its full support to opening this transportation lifeline.

“It is important that we restore this connection quickly because like so much about the Memphis region, it is an area of national logistical importance,” said Buttigieg.

Here's one that will seem........really weird.

Ever since I was 10 years old, I've ALWAYS had a phobia about bridges collapsing. If I'm on a long one and I'm driving, I take a deep breath and exhale slowly. It may go back to seeing a bridge that had collapsed in my county in 1979 when a crane being transported across it hit the top of it and it knocked it down sort of in a triangle shape.

The bridge that has always given me the most stress? The I-55 in Memphis.

To avoid that stress when possible? I always took the I-40.

Holy moses.

That's shared with my wife. Yesterday, we were approaching Ardmore, AL/TN, where AL 53 passes under the railroad bridge. There was actually a train running over it for the first time, which we had to pass under. She freaked...

When I was living in Memphis, the northbound lane of the Perkins Road bridge over Nonconnah Creek collapsed. A couple of people died. If memory serves, one of them was an All American safety for Memphis State.

My wife has nightmares of reaching the top of a high arching bridge and there being nothing on the other side of the arch. We were in San Francisco a few years back and she freaked going up one of the really steep hills.
