Is the SEC overrated this year?

From top to bottom, I think the SEC has regressed a bit. I think it will still end the season with several good teams, and there's still as much talent as anywhere in the country.

I don't think there's enough good things that can be said about our game. The scary thing is we still have lots of room for improvement. We will have some bad games this year, but I now feel far more confident in our ability to bounce back from adversity. I like the attitude of this team. It seems young and hungry, with a balance of veteran leadership. It's going to be an interesting road through the season.

Biggest disappointment to me is how ill prepared the bottom half of the conference was against bad competition. Tennessee nearly pulled the ultimate embarrassment, but Kentucky, Miss State, Mizzou, and Arkansas all looked awful against subpar competition.

Going into the season, I knew LSU's season hinged on the development of Harris. They have a nearly complete team, but they still have a lame duck quarterback. Fournette will have trouble putting up the gaudy stats he's used to when a team can load 9 in a box and not have to worry about getting beat over the top. That's a huge disappointment to me today is to see a team, who I thought was a strong contender for the playoff, look as incompetent as they did today.

I was impressed by A&M. I suspected UCLA was overrated, but I thought they would still beat the Ags handily. Even with the Ags still struggling to close games, they still found a way to win a big matchup.

Auburn is better than I expected them to be. I thought they would get steamrolled, but their defense looks good enough to keep them in most games. Remains to be seen if they can ever find an offense. I doubt though AU turns it around to more than an 8 win season.

Georgia also surprised me. I honestly thought they would be down a bit to start the season, and get better as the year went on. They were poised, and Chubb looked like a Heisman contender against a very good UNC team. It will be interesting to see if the new mentality and culture Smart is trying to instill will catch on quickly enough and stick through the entire season.

I await to see the Ole Miss matchup on Monday to make my final decision. I expect The Reb/Bears to take a step back and lose, but they've surprised me before. Despite all the off season chaos and the losses in talent, I could see them still riding on the momentum of last year.

What you don't know yet was how much of it was due to not respecting their opponents. You just can't do that in this day and age.

Still too early to be sure opinion:

Alabama - scary good but raw in some spots which will still produce growing pains. DL depth concerns me otherwise defense is brutal.
Arkansas - probably a .500 team at best
Auburn - defense looks much improved, offense still mediocre.
LSU - horrible loss, massively overrated, would be surprised if they lose less than 4 games at this point.
Miss State - Dak was all they had. Dak is gone.
Ole Miss - N/A
Texas A&M - solid win at home. Might just be #2 team in the West.

Florida - mediocre.
Georgia - solid win. Probably best in East right now.
Kentucky - Stoops needs to get his resume polished up.
Missouri - Probably a 3-9 team.
South Carolina - mediocre, but due to nature of the East, might be a 7 or 8 win team.
Tennessee - didn't look like a top 50 team, much less top 10. Will know more next weekend.
Vandy - same ole same ole.

The media fell in love with LSU and Tennessee, for reasons unknown. I doubt Ole Miss is the # 11 team in this great land of ours. Bert seems to always sputter early in Hawgville. Not a great opening weekend for the league.

I would say bama and aTm are the biggest contenders in the west, and everyone else today in the west looks like they are in desperate need of decent qb play. Ole miss I still think is a 3rd or 4th best team in the west, but we will know Monday

In the east I think it's too close to call. Uga definitely looked the best, but Tennessee is still the most capable team of righting a ship due to experience. I think the east will be decided in Athens when the Vols come between the hedges.

As far as overrated as a whole I guess I would say yes and no. Had LSU played Wisconsin last year on neutral grounds the same thing probably happens, and the blue print of how to beat them is revealed way earlier. LSU is the same paper tiger they were last year. The whipping dogs are the same whipping dogs that they have always been. I think the media hyped LSU up because they think that fournette can cover up the glaring weakness at qb, but today proved otherwise

I'm incredibly happy with the win for any number of reasons. First games being how they are though, who's to say USC had a defense/offense worth a darn? I'll be glad to see us play a few of the more decent teams we may face, whoever they turn out to be. Enjoying the hell out of this win until next week though :)

Well said.
We wound up providing that blue print last year.

The conference is sitting at 7-6 as of today, with Ole Miss left to play. College football teams are an ever changing, developing organism. The team "you" saw struggle in week 1 is a completely different team in week 6. Teams don't stay idle. They either get better or worse. From what I've seen in week 1, and if i were to view week 1 in a vacuum, then yes , the conference is down this year. But I know better than to do that so early. Teams will develop and get better and teams will not develop and get worse.

I didn't see another team outside the SEC who didn't have major problems of their own.

2 SEC teams played each other so the SEC is really 6-5 and one of those losses is Ken(is it basketball season yet)tucky.

Can't disagree with any of this.

The only thing I might disagree with is Auburn. I wouldn't even call it disagreeing, but more of a I'll wait and see before I decide their defense has improved. Didn't Clemson lose a lot of their offense to the draft last year? It's very possible they regressed a lot since January rather than Auburn improving, but it's also very possible they did improve. Time will tell on that.

What we do know is pretty much every team in the SEC besides Alabama, Texas A&M, Georgia, and Ole Miss (tbd) looked absolutely awful this weekend.

I like Dabo, but the term daboing is a real thing. Dabo reminds me of a better Shula in that he can field an elite team and still find a way to lose or nearly lose to someone he isn't supposed to. That last 45 seconds is just beyond comprehension.

The toughest thing is that no matter how bad some of these teams looked on the first week, that doesn't mean they'll be easy to beat when Alabama plays them. The issue is some numbers are now locked in, and no matter how good they become later in the year the losses won't go away.

I will echo a statement I made on social media.

My degree says The University of Alabama; not the University of the SEC. I don't care if they all lose as long as we take care of business
