Is there a scenario where we still back into the playoffs?

This whole situation really exposes just how bad the CFP model really is. The automatic bids are just stupid and please don’t give me the “NFL does it” argument - NCAA has 4x number of teams with nowhere near as much parity.
ultimately, with the rules as they are the acc and big 12 should be happy to get a team in at all, but also agree with most that the bye for top four aq’s is stupid

This will be a little like we saw early in the week where people slowly came around to the idea of Alabama getting in over Miami. At first a lot of pundits were jumping on different band wagons (in fact several on ESPN were picking South Carolina, some Miami).

Slowly some people and probably even Vegas are going to come around to the idea that Alabama still has a real shot at getting in. This is an idealistic battle though, and one that the committee left the door open to when they started devaluing SoS and didn't move TCU down after their conference championship loss.

I remember early on in the playoff era when Georgia played Oregon and the pundits were saying because of SoS the winner would be rewarded and the loser wouldn't be punished. This was how they viewed the landscape, elite teams playing elite teams would be rewarded, and now we're on the cusp of saying that you don't even have to beat a top 25 team to get into the playoff as long as your record is better.

I don't trust this committee, but their job here based on the things they are supposed to look at should be easy. SMU didn't win their conference, SMU has a weak SoS. The problem is the committee only sometimes cares about SoS.

Smaller conferences better be careful what they wish for. TV networks better be careful what they wish for.

An argument of what really is a mid-major conference at this point in the ACC championship mattering is ignorant, when the champion gets in automatically.

If the SEC teams which there are three that should probably get in over SMU and Clemson and probably Indiana too.... You said are worth president and showcasing that strength of scheduling does not matter and the strength of schedule does not matter the strengths of the schedule will be diminished It's as simple as that. That's how you make the big showdown games go away. That's how you lower TV ratings. That's how you kill the regular season. There are 64 power 4 teams. SMU SOS ranked 75th... That's a group of 5 schedule where last year they wouldn't have even been considered.

Not only that. There's a great chance Sanky will take away the smaller conferences ability to get an automatic bid if not...certainly their chances of getting a bi-week automatically. That's probably leaving anyways.

I don’t see how it diminishes the value of a championship game. If anything, it increases the importance of winning it. Though conferences might rethink having one. I do believe that putting SMU in solves a short term problem, but leaving Alabama out creates a big long term problem.
"data point" argument is that you provide one more data point for them to evaluate your resume by playing in championship game. Doesnt mean you shouldnt play if you could drop by losing. Basically you are taking risk to provide extra data point.

The extra data point for SMU still says they havent beaten any top 25 teams. The only question is how much outrage affects them if they dont select SMU

If we get left out in favor of SMU, I hope Byrne cancels the FSU and Wisconsin games and schedules FIU and Arkansas State in their place.
I get your take, but we didn’t lose OOC. What we should do is go to a 6 game conference schedule and schedule a bunch of G5 and small conference opponents ;)

The problem is the rankings come out in 12 hours, so there’s no time to marinate on the idea of Alabama getting in. If we do get in, it will be worse than last year, because at least then we win our way there by beating the #1 team. This year, even though we’re talking about the 12th team in and not the 4th, we would again be blocking the ACC.

It should be noted that Florida State went on to lose to 63-3 and have gone 2-10 since then. The committee was absolutely correct to leave them out.

The issue I had with the committee is they refused to do the right thing with their rankings earlier. For instance they had Oregon at #5 as the top ranked 1 loss team despite a weaker resume, and they refused to talk about FSU's weak SoS when discussing putting them below Alabama.

The committee did the right thing ultimately, but the wrong way and now they're in a position that is of their own design. If they do the correct thing they will get more backlash purely because they've refused to follow SoS as strictly as they should (it is after all one of their criteria).

It's stupid but I sure won't feel bad for them if they get a lot of backlash, if they did their jobs properly there would be a lot less. People don't lose their minds over this in basketball because they understand that SoS is a major factor so teams with really good records routinely get ranked far lower. It's just the committee screwing this up because of of that inclusive crap and then they go too far and realize they're about to completely screw over the SEC and come to their senses...
