Anybody got any scoop on James Carmon? A JUCO nose tackle from the same School as Terrance Cody? He's bigger than Cody at 6'7 and 375 lbs. Are we looking good with him? :BigA:

We're recruiting him. How hard probably depends on how his grades are looking and whether or not the staff feels he can contribute immediately. JMO.

The more I read about Carmon, the more skeptical I become.

He keeps talking about being tired of being compared to Cody, and that's one of the things he wouldn't like about coming to Alabama. He always has good things to say about UA and Saban, but it just seems to me like he is probably going to be the type to go somewhere else and try to blaze his own trail, so to speak.

It just seems like he wants to be known as the James Carmon, not the next Terrance Cody.

Its funny I kinda thought that Carmon is waiting to see what kinda season Cody has. How much publicity, and perhaps weather or not he gets injured this year which might determine to some extent how long he will play in Div.1 before opting for the professional level.
At any rate this guy will be force to reckon with whereever he goes.:BigA::BigA:Hopefully the Capstone:BigA:RTR!

I could definitely understand that if that's indeed the case, but to me seeing the kind of success that Cody has had in our defense should make UA extremely attractive to Carmon if we do pursue him. If he's anywhere close to as talented as Cody he'd likely be looking at a first round draft grade by the time he left UA. JMHO.

Cody will be a senior this season and off to the NFL after it.

Yes but what I meant was Cody could have left after his junior year probably would have been drafted in the second or third round. I think Carmon is waiting to see if cody's stock is going to rise or fall as far as the draft is conserned to determine how long Carmon will play in Div. 1:BigA:

If he stays healthy and continues to shed weight it's very likely Cody will be a first round pick IMHO. He likely would have been a borderline first round pick this year if he had decided to come out.

I am still not sure why would we pursue Carmon. Signing him puts him in the same class as Chapman (I think). So we would not gain much unless we were unhappy with Chapman. I don't think that is the case. Furthermore, it would slow the expected progression of Kerry Murphy. Also if we did sign him and Murphy decided to leave early, we could lose all the DTs at the same time.
I feel it is better to go after two interior guys next year and use the scholarship somewhere else. We shouldn't chase the ghosts of Terrence Cody. Cody was perfect for us when we signed him, but our roster is different now and I cannot see how Carmon fits it, unless he projects significantly higher than Chapman or Murphy.

Sounds reasonable enough. Using this logic, it would be imperative to sign a high school DL this year, considering the fact that it usually takes a year or two before DL make a significant contribution with top tier teams.

Cody isn't just great because of his size, he's great because of his athleticism at that size. Have there been any reports that Carmon is also similarly athletic?

I think Chapman may be our most unheralded defensive player, but he's solid and seems like he'll be an easy transition on our D after he becomes the starter when Cody leaves.

That said, we know Cody is gone after this year, so who is our #2 NG/DT after Chapman? I think having som insight to that will play a lot into our need of a JUCO player at the position. Do Murphy or Square develop enough? Does Dareus play DE or DT? Does Sentimore qualify? I think those are some of the things that need to be answered to see if we really NEED a juco who can come in and play immediately.

Speaking of Dareus...what ever happenned to his brother? Did he ever go to JUCO, how's he doing?

At last check he is playing football at Southwest Mississippi Community College. That said, I don't think he's really standing out on the field in any way. He wasn't mentioned in a single game article last year...

You are dead-on about Cody and his athleticism, and my gut instinct is that Carmon doesn't have that kind of athleticism. If he did, we and the rest of the top programs would be recruiting him much harder. As it stands now, he'll end up at MSU unless the Vols want him, and I'm not sure they do.

As for Chapman, I'll disagree a bit, and I'm not sold on him. He's strong as a mule, but as you alluded to, that's only one piece of the puzzle. I don't know, I don't think he's a bad prospect, but he hasn't stood out to me either. He really hasn't played a whole lot in key situations except against LSU, and Brett Helms whipped up on him pretty good then. He did look pretty good against Tennessee, but then again the Vols' offensive line made just about every defensive lineman in the conference look good too, so that doesn't say much.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to bash Chapman here. He should have three years of eligibility left (I think they were / are trying to get him a medical redshirt for 2007), and he could really develop in 2010 and beyond. My point is just that I don't think he's showed us enough yet for us to be able to fully rely on him just yet.

Not completely sure we have to this year. I think it is a luxury if we find the right guy. Keep in mind we signed Bonds, Moore and Sentimore last year. I think at least 1 if not 2 of those guys project on the inside. Plus we have Damion Square coming off a redshirt and Marcel Dareus able to slide in there situationally. So the DL is more of a luxury this year and not a necessity
