I'd rather my football players be burning one down than driving vehicles around drunk. If I had to choose at least.

Now-a-days if you kick a player off the team, then there is a good chance he will end up at a competitor.

I hate the Off Season. Players doing stupid stuff. Players showing up in arrest reports ect...
It's not just our guys, the Barn has the same problem.
Alcohol/Drugs and poor judgement seem to be the prevailing charges against college players nation wide.

I'm really looking foreward to Fall camps starting up, then coaches will have more contact with players.
Players will be worked till they are bone tired. To tired to slip off to clubs, or get into it with PD Officers.
I blame part of the problem on the NCAA. When the old football dorms, and football dineing rooms disappeared on most campus's players went ape with a little freedom. Discipline slipped everywhere, when players were suddenly treated like the regular students... Sometimes this has worked to the detriment of the players.

I'M READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL. (Just a little early)

Could the NCAA actually be a hero here and start allowing more player/coach interaction during the summer???

There will always be players who do stuff like this on their free time, but it seems the summer is the time these events happen most.

If coaches had more contact and could have some team activities during the summer it might help some.

This is worse than being "cited" for pot. DUI is like using a deadly weapon on the streets. Too many die from this and they are usually the persons in the other car, not the idiot drinking and driving. I hope Coach comes down hard on this stupid kid.
i don't see why driving high and driving drunk are separated in your mind...both are, and should be, considered major violations as they fully impair your ability to operate a vehicle.

that being said i'm tired of reading the police blotter in the offseason .... it's always something

Everyone is talking about "drinking responsibly" and using "bad judgement; but no one seems to recognize the fact that, with every beer or drink you down, your judgement about almost anything (except in some cases whether to have another drink or not) becomes poorer. So it seems to me the "best" way would be to not drink at all, thereby eliminating the cause of the "poor judgement". JMO

Now that's funny! But you're right. The last time I advocated not drinking I got called everything just short of Judas Iscariot. But, I also questioned peoples character (my opinion only), so I guess I was asking for a fight. I digress.

Do you really think that is plausible? In a perfect world yes but these are 18-22 y/o and they are going to drink. Considering most are going to drink the "best" way is not drive after you have had a drink.

I think this is absolutely plausible. It's all about choices, no one has to drink even in college. These guys are not average students. They live in a glass bowl. I think Coach Saban has stated he doesn't
drink because he wants to be certain he uses good judgments in what he does and says.

I know they are not average students but they are human. I don't think you can address the issue with abstinence.

Well, trying to get back to the football team just a bit.... I think Coach Saban has been pretty clear that he is going to have less time for people who foul up and more time for people who are doing the right things in the right way. Whatever else, I don't think anyone will take the position that driving with a .13 BAC is "doing the right thing".

A former player told me once that in one way, he actually kind of had confidence if the coaches were getting on his case, because it meant that they thought you could perform better, had skills that were worth developing, and that they probably planned to depend on you someday. He said what was dangerous was the guys the coaches just basically started ignoring.

So far as I know, this is the first trouble Reed has been in, so the coaches may care enough to try to affect his behavior. Players that just can't seem to stay out of trouble (looking at you KD) may find the head coach less interested in them this season.
