Rob-E Staten was an accomplished lifter for Bama in late 90's. I recall he had some Bama record(s) then. I remember him moving around to different positions on the team, trying find his spot. Don't remember much else.

I remember watching the '84 Boston College game and the announcers talking about how Mike Ruth, the BC nose guard, benched 585. I think he wound up going into the priesthood.

To put this into perspective, as best as I can tell from the picture, Jesse's not wearing a bench press shirt. As far as I can tell through limited research, although the unshirted world record sits well above 600lbs at 715lbs, 600lbs or more has only been pressed 58 times in the world previous to Jesse's lift. He's in rare company.
For us that are less informed, can you explain the difference between an unshirted bench press and one wearing a bench press shirt?

I hope that I haven't given the impression that I'm informed, because I'm not. But google is my friend. :)

A bench shirt is a stiff supportive shirt that assists the lifter in stabilizing his lateral arm and shoulder movement enabling the lifter to focus his muscular efforts in one direction - pushing out away from his chest. Being stiff, they force the arms' into a somewhat extended position when at rest. Consequently, they also provide a slight outward force when the bar is in the "down" position.

In a nutshell, the shirt stabilizes and also slightly assists, though that assist is miniscule in comparison to the weights we're talking about.

Nonetheless, a bench shirt can have a huge impact. For example, Scot Mendelson (of World's Strongest Man Competition "fame"), who holds the unshirted world record at "only" 715 lb, has pressed 1030 lb shirted. The shirted record stands at 1075 lb by Ryan Kennelly.

Talked to some staff and found out that J. Williams is as dedicated a player you will ever find! On an average day they say he will put in between 8-10 hours of time in the weight room!!!!!

On a side note: D. Belue benched 400 when weighing around 175 and fresh out of high school running back TJ Yeldon benched 410!!!

There is no doubt in my opinion that Cochran is doing as good a job as anyone in the country.

Thanks for the quality insight, Mr. Button.
