Have little doubt scholar/athlete McElroy could step into #2 spot in '06, but believe '06 redshirt is best for him and AL. BTW young McElroy wasn’t a 2-3 year starter because he played behind an “annointedâ€Â...several in QB scouting/coaching business think McElroy was better QB. Other guy had maybe 10 total offers from mediocre D1’s. McElroy had double digit D1A offers from some of nations best QB coaches before first snap and press reports more than 30…with great interest from likes of Michigan, USC, etc....continuing even after commiting to AL. McElroy continued to improve w/every season game in TX 5A big boy league. He put up over 300 yds/game during TX 5A championship series, against nationally ranked teams, and more importantly, TX’s best. Interestingly enough, he set all time school and state records after standing on sidelines for over 12 qtrs due mainly to a sappy QB carosel. He also eclipsed prior performances of Soutlake Carroll QBs...last two were TX Players of Year/All American. He ended season as TX record setting QB, Player of Year, and selectee to 3 All-American teams. Saw him compete on par with or exceed best of country’s ’06 annointed in “head to heads†at NIKE/Elite 11 competitions. Several SEC scouts were/are impressed and indicate McElroy may be cornerstone of Shula’s fast developing pro-style offense. Shula knows what he's doing. In any case AL got a good one! Roll Tide!

I think everyone is discounting Barnes too soon. Remember he he has been 3rd string this spring getting very little reps. When Guillon went doen he was put in #2 spot right before the A-Day game. As was previously mentioned he is learning a new system. Now, look at these stats from another site:

Last spring, before Barnes even made it to campus, the general "reviews" of him were he needed a lot of work (conditioning, etc) before he would be ready for SEC play. (Before his bit with Mono, mind you)

Concur. In 2003-04 McElroy, Southlake Carroll, played behind two-time TX POY, Elite 11, Parade (among others) All-American, Daniel. He was ranked among top dual purpose QB's in country and is/was tougher than nails. Surprisingly, Daniel wasn't highly recruited, possibly due to his sub 6' height. He is currently at MO and will most likely start this fall. Stafford, a 2-3 year starter from Highland Park (4A) was ranked by many top TX QB in '05, among top pro-style in nation, was highly recruited and signed w/GA. Interestingly, McElroy eclipsed several of Daniel's school records and set new TX all time records. Many knowledgeable TX QB watchers considered Stafford's level of competition, stats, and in-state level recognition non-comparable to 5A McElroy's. And, McElroy, as previously stated, stood on the sidelines for more than 12 quarters in '05. Be interesting to see future SEC matchups.

By signing day CMS had all the DL help on campus he needed and the DL is as good or better than 05. Three QBs on the roster right now, one coming, and to carry at least 4. With Mc on board he can be choosy. But needs to sign at least one.
i really dont think the big time div one schools, when they recruit and sign top level players out of high school, are looking at them for redshirt. i believe they are expected to step in and contribute asap. i expect smith to play a lot this year, and mcelroy to be at least nr 2 this year. i remember when brodie came to town, he would have been the starter if not for tyler watts, and the offense our friend used, the option. plus brodie if i recall came from a double AA program.
