Is anyone else a little worried about him as a potential backup if Guillon is unable to come back full strength. His throwing motion is a little awkward and he is extremely slow in the pocket.

I was looking forward to seeing Nikita play but Barnes continually overthrew and underthrew him. I know it was a last moment thing for him to work with the second team, but his motion and desicion making has me worried. I think over time he can develop into a good QB, but with McElroy coming in August and a possible stud QB in the next class he may not have the opportunity. Let's just hope he continues to improve and Guillon is o.k. for the time being.

Yeah, Jimmy Johns, Earl Alexander and Greg McElroy need to be move to the rotation quickly this fall. I know, I know JJ is not going to play under center, but with the way Barnes looked Saturday - CMS may change his mind.
 
JB is a drop back passer. He is not very mobile. I would like to see him lose weight. I'm surprised that he still looks lumpy. He almost reminds me of Kitchens (not the arm...just the size).

A drop back passer needs mobility. I'd call him your proto-typical passer out of a shotgun formation.

On McElroy...I still feel like I've felt all along: he'll challenge for, if not take over, the #2 spot next year.

I feel (and have felt) the same way, too. "The Force is strong with that one..."...

I am a HUGE JPW fan, and I think he will be a "National" name by the end of the season, but when McElroy hits campus, the competition will only do him good...
 
I am still not sure how we wound up with Barnes, although he was ranked 13th in the nation as pro style QB. He has a long way to go, at this point IMO Guillon would have to be #2. I have said all along that if we signed a highly ranked QB then I thought Barnes would be the odd man out, I still think that will be the case. He obviously has very limited speed and mobility and, at least on TV, appears to not be in the best condition. Maybe he can join Zeke at DE.
 
It looks like he's lost mobility and gained weight since the US Army All-American game a couple years ago. That's my concern.

I think Earl Alexander may get a longer look at QB than Johns did, but if McElroy does impress, he may immediately take over the #3 spot.
 
Somehow I get the impression that CMS is still not completely satisfied with the QB's we have, & would really like to get a top QB recruit, at some point. It really has nothing to do with the talent we have on campus, per se, just get a gut feeling he's looking for a better pure passer. Maybe he feels a pure passer will better enhance his system. Anybody else feel this way?

I think that Shula is confident in JPW. The lack of debate - or fight for that matter - over the starting job shows that. Wilson has potential, everyone who has seen him in practice says that. His decision making has to improve, but more practice and game experience will hopefully help. With a deep RB corp, I expect Shula will protect Wilson and run the ball a lot early in the season and ease Wilson into a larger role in the offense.

Still, we could definitely use a big-time QB commitment this year. The well is deep in terms of QB talent for 2007...we should get someone.

After watching Barnes in high school, on Fox Sports West, I thought he would develop into a good QB and thought he would compete with Guillon for the back-up. But after watching him Saturday, I agree with Terry that McElroy will probably push Guillon for #2 in the fall. Barnes has plenty of time to improve, but this year he may fall behind some other QBs.
 
I agree that our offense early in the season will be heavy with the run and safe passes to boost the confidence of JPW and then evolve as the season progresses. My biggest concern is an injury to JPW. Guillon's availability (based on the last 2 seasons) is highly questionable. If he can't go then it is either Barnes or take the red-shirt off McElroy. This, would be a nightmare and a much bigger problem than the OL.

I think we can safely consider McElroy a "top QB recruit." The kid just passed for over 5,000 yards and 56 TDs in one year in the biggest HS classification in Texas. JPW's record ain't bad either.
 
Barns is a shotgun QB. Barns is 3rd of 3 QBs on the roster. Barns wasn't prepared to play that much Saturday. I'm sure coach has a package for him, but had a show to do. Barns never had a chance. Come fall Barns will be working 3rd and either Mc or Gillion will 2. If Mc can do it, Gillion will still call in plays and help out. If not Mc redshirts. Barns is the 3rd string QB.... NO EA does not count. Like JJ about the 3rd day of practice someone will accidentally give him a football and then spend the rest of two-a-days trying to catch him to get it back.

Now that's funny!

Wilson will do fine. He'll make his share of "rookie" mistakes. But he'll also make his share of big plays. He won't be as flashy as Brodie was but he will probably be more consistent. Wilson will also make some plays where Brodie would've dumped the ball off before the play had time to develop or take a sack when the blocking broke down. That's something he brings to the offense that Brodie didn't.

I just hope he stays healthy. If we have to depend on one of our backups, no matter how good he is, we're going to struggle. Personally, I think McElroy will be the most talented QB on the team next fall. But I also think Coach Shula would really like to redshirt McElroy if at all possible. If we can get through the season with Guillon or Barnes as our #2 QB that's what we'll see. But if we're forced to play someone besides Wilson, I look for McElroy to be our QB.
 
Come on folks. Why do you think that Greg McElroy, who only has one year starting as a high school quarterback, will come in and battle for the number two or battle JPW for the starting QB position. He seems like he's a good player, but let's be realistic.

Remember, this time last year we were all heads over heels in love with Jimmy Barnes. Now people on this thread are talking about true freshmen coming in to take his slot. Wow!
