News Article: JOX ends the Opening Drive with Jay, Al and Tony ...

Jay was a fine QB, but really added nothing as a commentator, from my view. I won't miss the show.

The OD's big mistake was catering to the Auburn trolls who called in regularly to pester the Alabama fans listening. Alienating a large percentage of your listening audience is never a good business decision. Just saying.

I've got many issues with the OD and certainly won't miss it. One problem I had with the show was that it seemed to be largely dismissive of the internet and alternative sports media, which meant it had to pretend it had no idea who Joey Freshwater was or that Hugh Freeze was in potential NCAA trouble, etc.

It was sort of like reading Pro Wrestling Illustrated after the internet shows up.

...Tony is drunken, washed up disk jokey that made middle school-esque jokes daily...

Well, it was a morning show, so I think that they're required by law to have one host whose main responsibility is to make peepee and boobie jokes. Perfect for TK.

Normally I am not too harsh on talking heads. One reason I hated Round Table was the TRASH ON THE TABLE. It was mostly vulgar and silliness. Two things I won't listen to on sports are Political Correctness Crap and Vulgarness. I have the Media for Political Correctness and there is Porn if I want vulgar.

Isn't political correctness often just a form of policing vulgarity? I'm confused...

I used to lol whenever Al was off during the football season and they made sure to have that redneck Terry Henley to sit in. He lit up Moozahn after one of the early losses this year. Hope he enjoys that 7 miiion per year mistake.

Outside of Finebaum, I stopped listening to Birmingham talk radio when Mark and Brian left in 1987.

The OD especially was boring and dull imo.

Mark & Brian were fantastic...so many bits & songs...I still remember they called in the plywood order from 84 lumber in Knoxville to finish out the "VOLS" sign at Neyland stadium...the guy on the phone just went right ahead and took their order...I never knew what happened after the call ended, but I laughed all the way through it.

I guess I’m in the minority because I really liked the show and listened every morning on my drive in to work. I never have been able to get in to “The Round Table” show. It may be because it comes on after I’m already at work and I have less time to pay much attention to their show. I have a long commute Monday morning so I’ll get to catch a couple hours of the show.

I used to really enjoy the Matt and Scott show in the evenings (except the corny thing they did at the opening of the show with Matt... acting like he was getting there late every day and Scott would introduce him. Then after a long pause, Matt would go......”Hello”). To me the Matt and Scott show was a lot better than the JOX Primetime show they replaced them with.

Yeah, I didn't think the show was particularly good lately. I'm guessing their contracts were coming up and they decided to move in a different direction (moving the Dunaway, Brown, and Taylor show to 6-10). The Roundtable has been their best show since Paul Finebaum took his show to the big time. This move makes a ton of sense.

I know many may disagree, and I know Pawl got a big show and contract, but I like the Roundtable show much better than the morning drive or Pawl. I rarely get to hear it since it is in the middle of the day, but I am glad that it is coming to the morning slot.

I don't like The Roundtable moving to mornings, that's my "get me through the midday at work" show. I also wonder if this means they are off in Montgomery since 740 already has a morning show (it's horrible but I doubt 740 gets rid of it).

The few times I listened to the show Al didn't come across as a homer to me.

I agree. It was clear where Al's and Jay's allegiances were, but they both carried on discussions with objectivity, in my opinion. Al was horrible as an on air personality when the show first started, but he got better. I liked the little bit of inside knowledge that they both shared. TK was just annoying most of the time, but the show was pretty good during football season. I have always preferred the Roundtable show when I was able to listen in the summer, so I hope they remain the same in the morning.

I don’t listen to any of the shows on Jox anymore. If I want to listen to sports radio, I stream Tide 102.9.

The opening to Matt and Scott was the *best* part of the show!

Al may have been an auburn homer but he was far and away the most knowledgeable person on the show.

No doubt. He knew more about Alabama than Jay did. Just like most all barners that I know. They all have more inside information on Alabama than their own team.

Seriously ? He shamelessly plugged them every chance he got. But I would say Al paled in comparison to when they brought Frank Sanders in about 10 years ago as a guest. He was horribly obnoxious and a huge homer.
