I like the hire, although I have some concerns.

1) Guy wins everywhere he goes. 67-3 with three titles in five years at NAIA level, won ten games in his only real season with Fresno State, went 25-3 at Washington with a Pac-12 Championship and a Playoff Semi-Final Win (despite being the least talented team in the playoffs my a good margin).

2) Brilliant offensive mind and playcaller. His offenses were good everywhere he went, even Indiana.

3) Slightly worried about recruiting because any job that wants to compete for national championships needs to recruit at a high level. Bama hasn't paid top dollar in NIL to High School kids because we haven't had to -- they've taken a discount to play for Saban. What does our HS recruiting look like? Will, for sure, need to build out a staff of experienced elite recruiters from the SEC footprint.

4) His Washington teams weren't super physical on defense in fact were bad tacklers. A little concerning, although I think the setup at Bama will be different and I'm sure we'll have a good DC.

The barners calling in on Finebaum have said...and I quote "congrats Bama. You just became Vanderbilt" 😂 😂
So Auburn hires Freeze the sleeze because he beat Saban twice then Saban retires after beating aubie on 4th and 31. Alabama then hires a coach who just played for a National Championship to replace the Goat. The aubies just can't win. :D

The thing I worry about with this hire is it bucks the trend of single-syllable first name two-syllable last name coaches. Just from my lifetime, we've had: Paul "Bear" Bryant, Ray Perkins, Bill Curry, Gene Stallings, Mike Dubose, (the only counter example) Dennis Fanchione, Mike Price, Mike Shula, and Nick Saban.

Thank you GREG BYRNE for doing a spectacular job.
  • You got the best coach that could be found - probably your primary target.
    • IMO, the best Xs & Os coach in the country
    • for whom his players love playing
    • who may be the best developer of talent in the country
    • in whose short D1 career is 12-2 vs ranked teams, 7-0 vs Lanning (3), Sarkisian (2), Riley (2), a spectacular overall record of 104-12 (90%) and 25-3 (89.3%) as a P5 coach
  • You beat your own tight (72 hrs) deadline by more than a day
  • You kept an amazingly tight lid on the proceedings
  • You conducted the search with dignity and professionalism
Thanks again

Kalen DeBoer and Nate Oats - two homeruns.
