This hire kind of fits the bill for what I was thinking would happen; one Of the coordinators would be a risk because they have no ties to the Alabama culture and the other would be someone who has been at Bama with Saban. Look, Saban was not going to hire 2 coordinators that he would consider risks. Rees is a gamble; lots of upside and potential, but not yet proven against SEC competition with elite talent. Steele is a known commodity. He‘s also proven in the conference and has had success. Due to his many years of experience, he’s also had his share of defeats. it’s not much of a gamble because he knows the Bama culture and obviously Steele knows the expectations of HOW to be successful with an elite team. Taking on Schumann or Leonard would have been taking a risk at BOTH coordinator spots and we might be right back where started with PG and BOB.
This fits Saban’s MO. Look at his staffs over the years. They all contain mixtures of up and coming coaches and seasoned veterans. There has to be balance. I know many on here wanted that splash hire that would have made the entire country take notice, but this is what we have.
Surprised about the hire? A little because of who it was. Disappointed? Not that much because I feel everyone has an opportunity to prove themselves. I‘ve never coached a down of football in my life, but I know the head coach at Alabama has coached for a very long time and has won a lot of games. I trust he knows what he is doing and, as has been stated by those that know him best, he has a plan.
