Dang man, step away from the board for a couple hours then come back 10 pages into the Steele hire. Whatever the reason for the hire I know it was thoroughly considered. No one knows what Schuman is really and the same goes for Leonhard. Probably wanted an old hand on board. I trust it and back Coach on this one all the way. He ain't no dummy so there is a method to what he is doing. Should be interesting going into Spring ball that's for sure.

I'm not a fan of Steele. He's had years to convince me, but I'm still not impressed.
Could it possibly be that Steele might be the DC, until the NCCA makes a decision on Pruitt?
We could put Steele on the field, and Pruitt in the booth feeding him suggestions. Now we need to hire Jeremy as an assistant...
I think we might use Steele as a work around for Pruitt.

Now as was said in 'Silverado'... 'HIDE AND WATCH'.

This thread is comedy gold. Suttles was right in hearing that a former assistant was in line for a coordinator job and would divide the fanbase. I just thought it was Dooley or Grantham because I knew they would be controversial and I knew they interviewed. I never thought Kevin Steele would get this much pushback especially after people complained so much about Golding for years. I expected a “meh” response but good lord you would’ve thought we hired Bobby Petrino and Bo Pelini as coordinators with these responses.

I thought Steele put some good defenses on the field while at Auburn. They played with a lot of passion and would enjoy seeing that fire on the field again.

My question was why he would, at his age, be willing to make a lateral move. Heard a report that the state of Alabama requires 10 years in the system for retirement and Steele is at 9 years. If true, with that in mind, it would explain both the move to Bama and the possible hand off to another DC next year. Steele comes for a year, puts some fire in their bellies, earns his last year for state retirement and steps down/away for another DC to step in. Sounds like a win all the way around.

I doubt our statistical numbers on defense will get worse under Steele, but at the same time I don’t expect us to be #1 in every category next year either. All I can say is he’s a capable placeholder until Pruitt’s issues get resolved. Either way, we’re fine.

You can’t scream to the mountaintop how much you hate PG and now he’s gone you stay on the mountain screaming

I'm more confident with Tommy Rees and Kevin Steele as coordinators than still having BOB and Golding next year. I like the Rees hire better than Steele but Steele did have some good defenses while he was at Auburn. I may be wrong but I think the majority agrees with me.

Two scenarios and they both include Steele as nothing more than a placeholder.

A. There is a young coach (say Armstrong) on the staff that Saban is high on but knows he's not ready for the DC role, so he hire a guy he can trust to hold down the fort until said young coach is ready.

B. What if Bama still brings in Pruitt as a analyst while Steele is the on-field coach until the situation with Pruitt/NCAA is done and then Pruitt takes over as DC?

I know #A is more likely than #B but B can't be dismissed outright.

I'm not crazy about the hire (but then Saban does have a history or bringing back guys, ie Lance Thompson, etc) but I think Bama will be alright.

And LOL at the Eeyores.

Lots of stats, karma, complexity, uniqueness, etc about this search. Steele is probably an upgrade. But it feels like The Dating Game where the 3 contestants are all the same person and it’s your ex.
If you like piña coladas,
Seeing 'Bama's D in the game...

Lol to everyone that forced Golding out
Gol*igger, er, Hole Digger forced himself out 'cause of everything his namby-pamby *efense couldn't force:

* 3-and-outs

* pressure on the QB (the patented Gol*rush mush-rush)

* tight ends "blanketed" across the middle - Gol*ing's blanket was a Kleenex

* Tight coverage and contain on the corners

* All Bran's offense with about 3 healthy OL and a gimpy QB to run for less than 300 yards - really spun straw of out of gol* there,

* K-State not to take 10 minutes off the clock with a 20-play drive...

* Stubbed To'o To'o to wrap up

* And speaking of, situational awareness for any LB in the program since he became Saban's unfair-haired (and scraggly-bearded, downward-staring) Gol*en boy at 'Bama

Barner friend of mine just told me, "I am not happy about this as an auburn fan, Alabama fans can overreact to metrics and statistic if they want, But I know what he did for auburns defense while he was here."
Don't forget, he was both All Bran's and UcheaT's interim head coach - may still be working on their dime, which will save money down the road when he leaves as essentially having been 'Bama's interim DC (placeholder).

Ain't personally underwhelmed or overwhelmed by the hire. The yardstick - and yard-marker - to go by is "Ain't 3rd and Gol*ing no more" = Instant "re-cred" for 'Bama defense as is meant to be played.

I doubt we see much one man front in the first quarter with CKS. That’s one take away from the hire. Probably a little more toughness overall. Toughness and want to gets you off the field on third down. hopefully we have seen the last of a ‘finesse’ defense.
