re: Kirk Herbstreit Predicts Florida VS Auburn for SECCG (Very old thread from 8/2010)
I don't see what the big deal is. He's doing his job and at this point his or anyone else prediction is just that, a prediction.
I don't understand all the outrage. We all know it will be settled on the field. :BigA:
Does anybody remember that this is the same guy who said that it was a done deal that Les Miles was headed for Michigan?
How about this? The reason Miles was able to get up and be so dramatic about all that was that he was contradicting Herbstreit's prediction.
And now Herbstreit still has the gall to get up and say THIS?
Let me ask you this, please. If you were a member of the National Council for Choosing Prophets, would you choose Kirk Herbstreit as your official National Prophet, after he had made that bonehead prediction about Miles?
I don't think that it is so much the fact that Herbstreit said this about Auburn that gets to me, so much as it is the principle, the background situation, that makes it so that he CAN say something like this and it goes out to a national audience.
This has been going on at least since 1966, when Notre Dame and Michigan State played to a tie, and they were both put ahead of undefeated and untied Alabama in the final national polls.
OK, again. . . .Herbstreit is an Ohio State guy. He played at Ohio State, and so did his father. Ohio State seems to be the consensus #2 pick in all the national preseason polls. Herbstreit is saying here, in effect, that Alabama won't be #1 in the final polls. How is that news?
ESPN has a morning show, 'Mike and Mike in the Morning.' Who do they have as their Player-guy Mike? Why, it is a guy named Mike Golic, who played for Notre Dame. In fact, he was the ND captain, just like Herbstreit was the OS captain.
OK, so this baptizes both of these guys in the waters of the Northern Press. They are officially authorized by ESPN -- and therefore recognized as the official National College Football Authority, simply because they are the only game in town, really. It is NOT because they are GOOD at what they do, but because they are simply THERE.
Since this is a case of IT IS WHAT IT IS, Kirk Herbstreit, a guy who, three or four years ago, made a GOOFY national prediction that was SHOWN to be goofy, is given a pass so that he can take another shot at it and make ANOTHER goofy national prediction.
This kind of stuff has been going on for at least half a century in this country's college football culture. THIS time, maybe Nick Saban can stuff it down their throat. Alabama may have to go 14-0, though, for that to happen.
