I'll play devil's advocate on Ty Simpson for next season. Before I do that I want to address Milroe and the reason I'm not including him in my devil's advocate explanation. I think Milroe is too far behind in the passing skills it takes to run the type of offense Saban wants to run and regardless of Milroe getting mop up snaps over Simpson, I think Simpson is the more realistic option for next season.
Onto Simpson and next season. Do any of us know how this kid is wired, from a personality standpoint? I know I don't. If he is a kid who is obsessive about getting better and putting in the work, it isn't out of the realm of possibility that we won't see the degree of drop some are anticipating. These players these days have access and money to get private, professional instructors to go along with their coaching and reps with their team to expedite their learning curve between seasons. For the record, I am not suggesting that we won't see any dropoff, because I think we will. Bryce falls into the category of "generational" QB, in which we've been lucky enough to have two in less than five years, with Tua and BY.
But, the fact remains, we never won a national title with either of them as starters. One thing to remember, when having a generational player, there is a human tendency for the team to subconsciously not play up to their potential because they have the generational talent QB to pull them out. Yet, if he's not there, they KNOW they don't have that safety net and they have to give their all. This is a REAL THING in sports.
