Leonard’s Loser

I used to love Leonard's Losers back 50 years ago. It was in print then. Leonard Anthony Postero, Sr. died in 2001, at 79. He was a 1943 graduate of the University of Georgia and served as an aviator in the United States Navy from 1943–1945. His syndicated radio show was popular. My Dad used to bring home his weekly picks of losers. It's where I learned what a pachyderm was.

Leonard Posttoasties. Looked forward to listening on Saturday mornings at the University in the 60`s and early 70`s.

I love listening to this show. Does anybody else listen to it?

I loved it. My dad and I would listen to it on an AM station in his Volkswagon Beatle ("Bug" as we called it).

It was during a time when only the big games were on TV on Saturday afternoons too so listening was important to have a clue what might happen that day across the country!

The big-horned bovines from Austin, Texas will drive in to Tuscaloosa with big hats, big mouths, and big hopes. But the crimson pachyderms have tough skins, a bunch of size, a different mindset from a year they want to forget, and are faster than ya might think. The bovines will do some damage, but not enough to bring down an angry elephant on a mission. Leonard’s Loser, Texas.

My favorite Leonard’s Loser prognostication: October 1977. Alabama was traveling to Los Angeles to play the #1 ranked USC Trojans. Alabama has dropped a heartbreaker to Nebraska in Lincoln 31-24 the second game of the season. Jeff Rutledge had probably the worst game of his career (passing wise) throwing multiple interceptions (5). Alabama was ranked 8th. I believe USC was at least a touchdown or more favorite.

I was 17 years old and playing in a fall basketball league. A buddy and I were driving across town that morning for a game. Leonard’s Losers was on radio. We both listened closely as Leonard went through the normal “pachyderms from Tuscaloosa” and “Men of Troy” spiel. Fully expecting him to pick the Tide, his words to this day still stick in my memory “Leonard’s Loser……in an upset…..Southern Cal…”

I remember my buddy and I looking at each other like “Wow!”.

And remember thinking to myself, “Well old Leonard has faith we can pull it off, so should I”. And I watched every second of that game, with Keith Jackson doing the play by play, thinking “Me and old Leonard know how this will end”. 😆😂😂

I listen to HSFB on the radio on Fridays and they always play Leonard’s loser during halftime, pretty enjoyable stuff.

Didn't realize someone had brought it back. I remember listening with my Dad on the way to school on Friday mornings when I was a kid. The style is spot on, but it's just not the same without the original Leonard's voice.
