Let's Do This: 2020 QB Discussion

Jones is the starter without question. Bryce Young will have to prove he is better than Jones. And heading into the 2020 season, I doubt Young will beat him out. Tua could not beat out Jalen, Bryce will not beat out Jones.
Does anyone really think that CNS would handle 2017 Tua versus Jalen the same way again? Remember the palpable frustration that year not just amongst the fans, but the receiving corps, about Jalen’s limited passing ability and his tendency to abandon the pocket and run too soon? I’d bet the mortgage CNS will be quicker to pull the trigger the next time...

I would hope so.

I don't know how I feel about next season. I guess right now I am in a confused mode. We have underachieved the past two years and for the past two springs I have heard "how hungry this team is" and "how this team has something to prove" from both the Media and many fans. To add to my confusion our coaching is suspect IMO …… I am just in limbo. I guess I mean this season these players who are so highly rated and this coach who is so highly rated both have something to prove to me. Are they really as good as their rating?

With all due respect, Redwood, if this team and this coach have something to prove to you — after an unmatched decade of brilliance — maybe you should spend next season in a cool, dark room with the TV and computer unplugged. Yoga might be good.

We have come to a place where winning a national championship is the only acceptable result of our season, and that is extremely unrealistic. There are 130 DI programs, and of those in any given season, 6-8 might have a real, legitimate shot at being #1 at the end. We are one of those 6-8. Every single year. Since 2008. It is an amazing display of consistent excellence and one no one else can boast. Clemson is getting there are most likely will, but for the time being it's Alabama the rest of the college football world is compared to. Sometimes I think we all need to step back and take a fresh look at what the man has done here.

I cannot imagine how hard it is to be Lia, Tua's little brother and playing the same position at the same, high-profile school. Just think about that...everything he does will be viewed through some pretty focused lenses by everyone who cares anything about college football.
It may turn out that the best move for Lia, if he cannot beat out MJ or BY, would be to transfer to a lower profile program and develop in "relative" peace and quiet. All the NOISE he is currently experiencing cannot be either helpful or easy...

Whoever the starter is for next season, I just hope all 3-4 QB can stay injury free. And that Bryce can gain about 10 or 15 pounds of muscle without it affecting his abilities. Also, since Saban has said he likes to have 4 scholarship QB's, I hope nobody transfers.

I think Saban has learned from 2017 and as soon as BY is ready, he takes over. Probably by mid-season. Just a hunch - MJ is really good, but BY has the potential to be GREAT.

Agree. BY may take over at some point -- and not because MJ is playing poorly; but because he's won over the team and is playing exceptionally well.

Saban puts great emphasis on the QB winning over the team. Tua's freshman year, it seems Tua won over the team at some point; but Saban either did not recognize it or was blindly loyal to Jalen until he saw a NC slipping away.

The four game redshirt rule is really helpful in these situations. BY - and Lia - will have an opportunity to get a good bit of game action. If they are progressing fast enough, we'll be able to see it ourselves.

Having been on this board since it was about six months old..........here we go again.

1) Nobody knows.

2) Everybody has a favorite or what they think should happen because it's what "they" would do.

In fairness, Selma, nobody could post anything here unless they were CNS if we only post things we know. And certainly, it's impossible to know what someone else would do so we typically post what "we" would do.

I get it.

It's just a tiresome "almost every year" thing anymore.

2014 - Coker is gonna start because Blake Sims reasons

2015 - Coker has a lot of competition and might not even start

2016 - my god, who knows?

2017 - Jalen, yeah, he'll improve - oh, let's start that Tua guy

2018 - is Jalen gonna transfer something something

2019 - now that Jalen is gone, who's the backup besides Mac Jones, who is apparently just lousy

I'd like a year, please - just a year.

Because in 2021, it's going to be worse.

I think Mac Jones gets the start against USC but I do think Bryce Young takes over as the starter at some point during the season. Since Young originally committed to USC it would be quite interesting if he were to end up coming into that game in relief to lead us to victory. I think Taulia transfers because he's probably the #3 QB next season.
I would be surprised if BY came into the game with USC. There's probably some bad blood and hurt feelings from USC towards BY. If he does play then it would be open season on late hits, tackling at the knees etc against BY. Maybe some sort of retaliation from USC.

Clemson IS there, not getting there.

We wouldn't have boards like this if not for discussions like this. Sure, we all know that we cannot be sure of anything, but that is part of the fun of it. It gives us a reason to talk about Alabama football when there is nothing to talk about.

Again, I "get" it. But the story is kinda the same. It's like the dreaded "Bama fatigue" nonsense.

Talking about future starters can actually help educate fellow posters about the players on the team who they may not have heard of. Not everyone here follows recruiting or roster management. Not everyone knows who is really in play. We share information and ideas in these threads.

I believe it is called competition and I hope that there will always be competition at Bama for all positions. It makes greatness. Doesn’t help us, the fans sometimes, but it does give us something to talk about while patiently waiting for the new season to kickoff.

Nobody will know how the competition will shake out. Mac is #1 and should be able to hold on to his job this upcoming fall. If Young is going to make a push it'll be later in season and we struggling to move offense. I don't think there will be competition for #1 but rather for #2 behind Mac Jones.

Given that any further response from me will seem strident, I will do the board a favor and bow out of this particular thread. It's just one of the most frustrating things to me about the whole deal.
