Let's Talk Defensive Pass Interference

I agree with both these thoughts. I wish announcers would stop saying that when a defender doesn't turn his head to find the ball that it's automatically a penalty. If the defender makes contact before the ball arrives, regardless of the position of the defensive back, then it's PI.

This is exactly why I started the thread. Announcers act like it's a guaranteed DPI if the defender doesn't turn his head. That's not the case, though.

I think it is all in the interpretation. The refs give some leeway with contact when the defensive player is "playing the ball". When the head is not turned and the defender runs through the receiver who has turned to come back to the ball it is a pretty easy call.

This. I think the key that the commentators are alluding to (but don't always fully explain) is that when there's (a reasonable amount of) contact but the defender is looking at/for the ball, the contact is sometimes excused. If there's contact but the defender is NOT looking at the ball it's an easy Pass Interference call every time.

^ This is not true.

It is not defensive pass interference (A.R. 7-3-8-IIIand 7-3-9-III): When two or more eligible players are making a simultaneous and bonafide attempt to reach, catch or bat the pass. Eligible players of either team have equal rights to the ball (A.R. 7-3-8-IX).

Each player has territorial rights, and incidental contact is ruled under "attempt to reach...the pass’’ in Rule 7-3-8. If opponents who are beyond the line collide while moving toward the pass, a foul by one or both player is indicated only if intent to impede the opponent is obvious. It is pass interference only if a catchable forward pass is involved.

People think because Herbie or Gary says something, it is so.
Many announcers don't know the rules and make stupid comments that get ignorant fan bases all in a tizzy.

The biggest gripe I have is the inconsistency in calling PI. They call a penalty on a guy who is lightly "arm checking" and has zero influence on the catch, then a guy gets mugged 20 yards down field almost getting pulled down, and you get a no call.
Its like NBA foul calls sometimes.

There's no such thing s face guarding in the NCAA, but if a DB turns his head to look for the ball, minor contact is generally considered to be incidental - both are playing for the ball. When a DB doesn't turn his head but makes contact with the WR, it's going to be called more often than not. Ignoring the fact that locating the ball can result in more passes knocked away or intercepted, I think we'd get far fewer PI calls against us if our DBs played the ball. That's how it's called.

I'd like to see us run more zone. We were in zone coverage on Cyrus's pick at the end of the first half.
Eyes fully on the QB and he simply drifted back into his zone area and watched the ball thrown right to him.
