LSU wrap-up: Winning teams have to learn to win ugly – like Bama did tonight

by Jess Nicholas, TideFans.com Editor-In-Chief

Not every cake is going to be the best cake you ever ate; not every song will have the most memorable melody, and not every date in high school is with the prom princess.

Over the course of a full season, successful college football teams certainly have to win, but sometimes that’s not enough. Sometimes they have to win ugly. And Alabama did just that against LSU, 20-9.

I am just a fan. I claim no knowledge of the technicalities of the game. However, given such limitations, it seemed to me that our play-calling left a lot to be desired. Perhaps Jess approached that indirectly with his comments about the running game and long passes.
It was not a game to be enjoyed. It was filled with angst!
But as Jess said, sometimes you have to win ugly.
I'll take it!

On one hand, “make their (rear end) quit” isn’t in the lexicon of our current staff. On another, I believe our staff is uniquely qualified to play in and win closer games on a regular basis. In the year 2025, that may be more important.

Also, I’d give Ryan Grubb five whole American dollars to see a one-read slant on a three step drop every once in a while. Other than our side-to-side runs, the defense regularly has enough time to make a sandwich before concerning themselves with defending the development our route trees which doesn’t help our protection at all.

Too many cutesy type play calls. The O never got into any rhythm. The D is flying around. Tackling looking better.
I will tell you what, those double pass plays (first "pass" being a lateral) are pretty risky. One of these days, a DB is going to recognize that and intercept the ball and then it's off to the races.

Regarding the defense. The players seem to have gotten so comfortable with the scheme that theyre now able to use their athleticism to play rather than thinking. We've got some very good athletes on defense that I think have been hindered by continuing to get used to Wommacks system. It looks like theyve gotten very comfortable in it.

I’ll take the win. Missed some throws that maybe could have killed off the game earlier. When that gets cleaned up and it will, look out.

Simpson was completing 75% plus when we used short/intermediate routes with an occasional downfield throw...that's what we need to go back to....our receivers can get open for 5-8 yds and are capable of turning those into bigger plays

This was not one of Grubb's better called games...trick plays did not work and our OL was MIA on the running plays -- or else the RB could not see the hole. I can remember when we would have lost this game.

Defense showed up big time -- all across the board. LSU changing QB's could have been a knife in our heart if our D -- and YPierre had not shown up time and again.
