Heh heh, this is like watching one of those elaborate domino constructions collapse. This is kinda fun.

We went after three very, very, very, long shot coaches and lost. All things given, did we really have solid chance at any of them. I say no, we did not, but at least we tried. If we had not tried, there are those among us that would have cried we didn't. I hope we step back now, take a deep breath and offer Paul Johnson the job. The man who I've liked all along and is an excellent coach.

I have said from the beginning that if Mal did not have a coach lined up, he should not have fired Shula. This proves my point even more. We are going to end up with someone who does not have the passion for Alabama that Shula had, and someone who might not be as good of a coach. Say what you want about Grobe being an upgrade, but I just do not see it. Shula was younger, probably a better recruiter, and I am not sold on the idea of someone with a 67-66 record (or whatever it is) as being a better coach than him. I know he coached at Wake Forest where it is hard to win, but one good season does not cut it for me. Shula had that season last year and he probably could have gone and gotten a good coaching job somewhere just like Grobe can this year. I really hope we go after Johnson over Grobe. He is a proven winner even if it was only at Georgia Southern. I am not one to go after firing people, but Mal and whoever else was in on the firining, should have done their homework before firing Shula.

I would just like to say that when the football team doesn't produce results, you fire the coach. So our football didn't produce this year, so we fired Shula.

When the AD doesn't produce results year after year, someone must eventually point the finger and say "no results, pack your bags." So maybe it is time to say, listen your a great person for Alabama football, but the results are subpar, it's that time.

We are so easy to pass the blame, oh it's so and so's fault. The problem lies here, or there. But the truth is that when you are over something and it doesn't produce, your job is, and should be on the line. It happens at work, at school, everywhere.

Problem is MM didn't want Shula. He wanted Croom, apparently. The Pres forced the Shula hire.

Mal to blame? Spare me.

Let's review. His goal is to get a great coach. So he runs the traps with Spurrier. He thoroughly explores the possibilities with Saban, then wisely decides not to be held hostage by a coach whose ego and impermanence far outweigh his wins and losses.

Which brings us to Coach Rod. And a story.

A long time ago, Paul Bryant came within minutes of taking a job with the Dolphins. Great money, total authority, the works. He accepted in principle. But eventually, he picked up the phone and said he couldn't keep his word. He couldn't leave his players, his state, his home.

That's the kind of force Mal Moore faced in West Va. He put a great offer together. He moved quickly to get his man. In the end, the gravitational pull was too much.

So be it. We'll move on. Mal Moore will too. He's proven to this one-time critic that, this time around, he's making all the right moves.

Next time, let's hope, that will be enough.

This is an outright embarrassment, and when you are the AD, unfortunately, the buck stops with you. Mal will leave on his own terms.

I mean, $2 million is a heap of dough, but we were flying pretty close to ground on this one so we can't be that surprised if we crash.

There were some heavy incentives in the contract also. Up to $750,000 bonus for such things as graduation rates, conference championship, MNC, etc.

It's hard to say who is at fault, but one thing can be gleaned from most of the articles. MM and RR had a gentleman's agreement if they could reach certain negotiating points, then RR would take the job. So it would **appear** that RR is not a man of his word. But that is just my take on it.
