Maria Taylor's response to Coach Saban on the Paul Finebaum show

You hit the nail on the head.
One thing that I think added to Coach Saban's ire was that 30 seconds before kickoff (literally) she asked him who the starting QB was going to be. I had missed seeing this until watching the replay. I think that was the impetus for why he said "QUIT ASKING!"

But that notwithstanding, Coach apologized hours after the game. So why is this a story a week later? Goes back to my point about his reaction is exactly why the question was asked.

This young lady is a class act and is about as down to earth as they come. I also think she is very sincere when she says it didn't bother her because as she stated, she's been "yelled at by coaches" since she was twelve years old. She gets it. Most people who grew up playing sports for most of their childhood and teenage lives understand exactly what she's talking about and coming from. It's why I truly believe her when she said it really wasn't that big of a deal, because to her it wasn't. The only ones making a big deal of it are the ones whose career revolves around making a big deal out of anything and everything. I'm glad the book is now closed on this non story.

“I’ve been yelled at by coaches since I was 12 years old playing AAU basketball. You know what I mean? I’ve been called everything under the sun, and by any coach you can imagine,” Taylor told Finebaum. “So it didn’t really affect me in that way. I understand that at times coaches get heated and there are things they don’t really want to talk about. As a sideline reporter, you’re in the line of fire, and I just got lit up once. And that’s fine. And I received a call from Saban even before I got to the highway leaving the stadium. That’s how passionate he was about getting the apology out. It wasn’t after he heard a backlash about it or negative talk, it was how he felt immediately in that moment. And I’m so thankful, and I respect him for making that call.

Very, very classy on Maria's part. She's a talented sports reporter and a good person. Her response after CNS saying he's not gonna disrespect either player was " I hear Ya" meaning she expected the response and accepted it for what it was.

As far as "FineBum" (I like that tag BTW) he's become nothing more than a sensationalist because he knows that's the style he has to adopt to remain in the limelight. As a reporter/journalist he's really nothing special and his antics will eventually send him down the broken road with C*wherd an K*nell.

I wouldn't put Cowherd in the same boat as Kuh_Nail. Like Cowherd or not, he is still considered to be a success in his career and though people may not agree with his takes. He is not viewed in the same light as Kuh_Nail. Which is "Go sit at the kids table Danny, the adults are talking."

In defense of the media in general...

I saw a story about why Saban had allowed ESPN access to his program for the four part series they recently aired. His explanation was that our football team had been the target of a lot of negative recruiting tactics, and he wanted to use the media to give the public a better and more accurate look at his program and process.

And that's what he, and they, did.

And now, back to media bashing..."Here's a twenty, bury two." :biggrin2:

I started a new thread rather than putting this in the existing thread about the entire ordeal because I was concerned that some who might be interested were tired of checking the old thread.

Anyway, she was incredibly sensible and gracious as most who are familiar with her would expect. (IMO, she would never try to provoke an incendiary comment, though I realize producers and directors have their influence. She asked a legitimate question since live action had then taken place.)

Here is the quote from the Saturday Down South article which was quoting from the Finebaum interview. The link is below.

It's difficult not to be charmed by her. Also, it is significant that Coach Saban reached out to her immediately, i.e., he was not coerced by media whining. He knew he had been uncivil and needed to make it right. She was right to make the quick response known.

So how did Finebaum react to what she said?

I don't know the background of some of these sideline reporters....most of the time I expect they just want someone with a pretty face, but the fact Maria Taylor is a former, big time athlete who understands sports culture is the reason she understands the situation.

I know it's easy to not like the media, but MT is the kind of figure that's made for this type of job. Finebaum? I doubt he every played a sport growing up.

Both showed great character and professionalism in how this situation was handled. I am sure the sports media is disappointed that the situation was defused.
You could just hear Finebaum deflate after Maria said that everything was good haha.

Glad to hear that. I'd have bet good money that Ms. Terry had some influence there too.

My problem is that if he had called her before the night was over, why let the story linger? She knew how much outrage there was and she could have stopped it that night. Not impressed here.

The fact that Saban reached out and apologized immediately shows you the kind of person he is. The reason no one asked Maria about it until now is because they (the media) knew already and, her angle didn’t fit the narrative they wanted to run with.

This just shows you how small and petty the majority of the media is, always making them the story instead of reporting a story. Needing a public apology even when a private one has already been given. It always about them and how they have determined that this person must be crucified.

This crap is why I don’t watch sports shows like SportsCenter or SEC Now anymore. It’s not about the sports, it’s all about making themselves look good. I mean SC has a whole show named after the host. Can’t stand SVP and his “look at how great I am” attitude.

I’m so glad that we have hundreds of different ways to get our sports information these days that has eliminated the need to rely on the ESPN slant.

Actually SEC Now is probably the best CFB show on the ESPN Networks right now, no agendas, no biases, just straight to the highlights and analysis.

So how did Finebaum react to what she said?
He called in Booger McFarland and brought the whole thing up again to get his reaction to it. Boog then proceeded to say how outrageous it was for Nick to do what he did and blah blah blah.

They are going to squeeze every drop out of this story that they can.

Calling Coach Saban a bully and saying he's classless is IMO fake news. Both of which the media did. We all know that he's no bully and no way classless.
