Maurice Smith-Gate; SEC grants waiver to UGA w/ strict guidelines and penalties

Re: Maurice Smith Transferring; Alabama Grants Release, Up to SEC to Clear [UPDATED]

My question to this is: Will uga have to keep him on scholarship during the time he is completing his graduate degree after this season?

Not if he leaves the school. At any rate, his eligibility ends after this season, so it wouldn't count against the 85 if they extended a scholly for academic purposes only.

Re: Maurice Smith Transferring; Alabama Grants Release, Up to SEC to Clear [UPDATED]

The SEC's conditions give him until the spring semester of the 2018-2019 school year to get his MPH from UGa, a degree that requires 44 credit hours, or 3 semesters even if he only carries 12 (the minimum for full-time status at UGa) this fall. Even if he takes a full year completely off after the fall semester (spring to prepare for the draft, summer to prepare for his rookie season, fall for the season), that still leaves him two springs and summer to complete two semesters of work to get his degree in a program for which, as we all know, he has clearly and passionately stated his desire

That said, as far as I can tell, the player is in no way sanctioned if he goes "one and done" (how could he be, once his eligibility expires?), so all the risk resides with Kirby Smart and UGa.

I give him a low probability of completing this work. If he gets drafted I suspect he is long gone and never sees Athens again. If he doesn't the cost of grad school would be prohibitive since he would no longer be on scholarship.

Not only do they not have to extend it after this academic year, once he declares for the draft he'll only have the spring semester that UGA can pay as part of his athletic scholly. After that he is on his own. Plus if he really wants to go the NFL path, chances are he won't be in school in the spring. He's going to have to pay for his grad school himself, or UGA will take the penalty unless he can 'earn' some type of academic scholly.

Do we know if he's enrolled at UGA yet? i.e. did Smart agree to all these conditions about his enrollment? Seems like a really high risk to take on unless they are desperate for some help in the secondary. Would be funny if Smart decided to redshirt him so he'd have to stay around long enough to finish the degree so UGA wouldn't get the penalty.

Re: Maurice Smith Transferring; Alabama Grants Release, Up to SEC to Clear [UPDATED]

Yeah, the clearest memory I have of Smith was his penalty on the kickoff following one of our TDs vs. Ohio State. Can't remember which one, but I think it was the one that put us up 21-6. We had all of the momentum and he gets an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after making the tackle on the kickoff. Seems like he stood up and flexed or something like that. It was a great play and OSU was pinned deep, but the penalty screwed that up and they went on to drive to for a TD.

Who knows how much of a difference it made in the grand scheme, but college football is a game driven by emotion and momentum.

Anyway, this whole saga was utter nonsense from the start. Andy Staples has a good article on SI about it. Of course, he was for the transfer and thinks players shouldn't be restricted at all, but he made the point that the SEC let Coach Saban take the fall for this. I agree.

As for Georgia, Kirby Smart, etc., I'm looking forward to our next beatdown of them.

Re: Maurice Smith Transferring; Alabama Grants Release, Up to SEC to Clear [UPDATED]

I'm not going to disparage the guy's academics. I have no idea what he majored in at Alabama but to get a 4 year major college degree in 3 years in pretty mind blowing to me. It's amazing for someone who doesn't play Athletics much less a guy playing D1 fooball at the highest level. So why is it so out of the question that the kid will get his Masters? He has 5 semesters to do it.....I'm not sure he'll be drafted so it would probably be in his best interest to see it through anyway.

Btw the reason 3 year graduates impress me it based against my own college experience. I made straight A's in HS and College and it still took me 5 years to get a BS in Finance. Now I DID change majors a few times, skipped summer semesters, and worked a full-time job simultaneously. But I still took full course loads in the Fall and Spring semesters. I worked my rear end off in College going on 4 hours sleep continuously from being up late writing papers and working on projects and studying. Even If I had taken classes in the summer semesters I could have only made it in 4 years at the fastest. It blows my mind that some of these kids do it in 3 WHILE playing major D1 football too....which to me is similar time commitment wise to me working a job 32-40 hrs a week being a full time student.

So anyway my point is the kid is a hard worker no matter what you think about him leaving.

If a player stays and goes through spring drills then he should not be allowed to transfer any where.

Adding summer classes really makes it easier, and some of the degree programs probably would not have required you to crack a book between classes. Now, the kids graduating in "real" degree programs in 3 years - they impress me.

Not that difficult anymore. Arrive on campus for the June semester and have two semesters of classes under your belt before beginning fall camp. Not even mentioning, the guys that arrive on campus in January.

I'm not going to say it's not possible for him from an academic standpoint, but if he is chasing the NFL dream, he'll likely not enroll for the spring 17 semester so he can focus on combine/workout/tryout prep. If he does so much as sign an UDFA agreement worth a single dollar, his financial aid is completely done from an athletic standpoint. That means he will have to fund his own grad school, and that it will have to be at UGA. No options for going anywhere else to graduate as per the conditions from the SEC.

If he doesn't make the NFL - that could be a big financial burden to take on.

If he makes the NFL - he'd have the funds, but how likely is it he'll come back AND be able to get all the work done in between active roster time in the NFL?

Re: Maurice Smith Transferring; Alabama Grants Release, Up to SEC to Clear [UPDATED]

I think this will all come back to bite Kirby on the behind, especially when MO doesn't fulfill his part of the 'conditional' release. This reminds me of the little league mom who whines to the coach about their little wimpy kid not getting to play.

When it does, maybe Kirby can get Mo's mom to talk to the NCAA?

Did we not have what he needed for his master's?

I don't for a minute believe his passionate desire to get whatever degree that was. He said as much in interviews and social media. He doesn't like some of the new staff (or they don't like him), and he knows the scheme at UGA which is why he wants to go there instead of someplace like Miami.

This is all over but the crying. I'm closing this topic because nothing fruitful is going to come from further discussion of Maurice Smith's decision.
