I guess I'm...

that sort of selective stander. OTOH, if the people in front of me want to stand up, I just stand up. I don't complain. I'll join them. I yell on every defensive play and turn around and try to get folks to shut up when we have the ball. I've often wondered why the jumbotron doesn't display "quiet" when we have the ball, or maybe, "shush." For that matter, maybe they do. I'm too absorbed in our offense... :D

How about "The Noise Gate"

Definition:

The noise gate is a special case of a type of processor known as an expander.
When the signal input to the noise gate falls below a preset threshold the gate "closes" by reducing the output gain to zero at a rate defined by an attack control. When the signal level exceeds the threshold the gate "opens" by restoring full gain at a rate defined by a release control.

The basic usefulness of noise gates is to reduce noise in a signal by only passing the signal when it is at a significantly high level. This level effectively masks the underlying, unwanted noise which may be present in the signal. When the signal falls below this level the noise floor may become audible but the closing of the gate blocks it.

And the blocking scheme of the O-line? ;)

Who's in charge of that? Maybe we could get the JumboTron Operator to input some crowd instructions for when to make noise and when to be quiet?

The perfect way to get everyone standing...

Like in Basketball, have the new student section sit in all of the rows that are closest to the field from fraternity section to regular admission section. Then make all of your members be committed to standing all of the time.

Doing so will make all of the people behind you be forced to stand up, which will domino effect to the top of the student section.

To make this work you need Mal Moore to approve of you having all of those reservations and also you are going to need sheer numbers to enforce the standing.

Also,"Mike's Maniacs" has got to go. How about "The Crimson Abyss" sounds alot more intimidating.

Well, I'm going to get to the root of the problem for you: the Greeks. The frat boys wear a full suit to a football game because they are just that cool. The sorority girls show up in party dresses because they allow themselves to just become the arm candy for the frat boys. I don't have too much of a problem with the Greeks, but they are coming to a football game not a formal...dress accordingly. Also, maybe if we students were a little less plastered they would know when to pump up the noise and not.

I know...

that the jumbotron says things like "loud," or "make noise." I don't know why it couldn't also say "hush." Except maybe the operator is not too sure when we should make noise? I have to second Terry. It's very hard to break down positions live, unless the errors jump up and hit you in the face...

That is a total exaggeration.

Frankly, IMHO, dudes running around with no shirts, wigs and painted faces would be embarrassing.

Actually, the Greek section is probably the loudest section in the stadium.

Your one of the reasons why Bryant-Denny will never be considered one of the toughest places to play unless we can change your mindset and thousands others. Since when has it become an embarrasment to have fans put themselves so much into the game they go absolutely nuts to try and help their team out? Give me a break. What makes you think wearing a suit and tie is so much more appropriate to a football game? Did you hear me correctly? Yes, I said a football game. Wigs, painted faces, and no shirts should be a heck of a lot more common than business attire!

I'll tell you what... I originally moved from the midwest to go to school here at Alabama, and I was excited as hell to be moving down to root for an SEC school in an SEC atmosphere. Why is it Alabama fans can't live up to the reputation that the SEC has as a whole as to having the greatest fans on earth?

I'm too old for this argument, but my point was that only freshman guys dress up (in khakis and blazers) in that section...because they have no choice. Sophs - Seniors wear whatever they want, and it is NEVER a coat and tie.

And when (and if) Bama becomes the toughest place to play in America, it will be because of our football team, never a small group of fans wearing costumes.

I'm out. Roll Tide.

I think that fans will begin to get more into it and make more noise as we continue to win more games. I think that's where it all starts. I don't care if opposing teams are worried about how much noise we make in BDS. I want them to be worried about how many points we are going to put up against them. When we score, people yell. As we win more games, people will get more into it.

Personally, I think that the chest painting and the clown wigs are silly, but again that is just my opinion. I think it is great that you want to cheer and encourage our team, but I also think you have to be considerate of others around you, outside of the student section anyways.

I do stand at games during the critical moments that were discussed, but I always try to be considerate of the other people that have paid to be at the game. People pay to be at the game, not to jump up and down and yell. They can jump and yell anywhere (but they might look at you funny).

How about calling them Shula's Shoeless or something, and have the members all go to the stadium in their barefeet. Once it got cold enough you won't have a problem getting them to stand up. They'll be more than glad to jump up and down just to keep the circulation going in their feet. You could tell them that since they were already jumping up and down, why not yell.

Why does this "standing during the entire game" keep coming up? It's just a stupid idea. I take my children, father and grandfather to games. They phsyically can't do it. I have to request people in front of us to sit down so they can see the game. Most are accommodating, but several have had the unfortunate experience of being visited by police officers (at my request) who don't take no for an answer. Please remember to be courteous and thoughtful to those around you. The benches are there for a reason.
You're kidding, right? You've actually called to police on fellow Bama fans because they stood too long or during a time that you deemed inappropriate? Do you notify the fans in front of you when it's ok for them to stand and cheer? Do they constantly keep turning around waiting for your ok to stand? Who died and appointed you "stand and cheer/sit and cheer" manager? I missed the press release.

Please consider not attending anymore games.

For the record, I called my little brother who just happens a sergeant with the Tuscaloosa Police Department and has worked every Bama home game for the last 14 seasons. I asked him to read your post and tell me what he thought. This was his answer.

It is not against the law to stand and cheer and there is no time limit on standing and cheering. He said he might notify a fan that people behind him couldn't see and were complaining, but he would NEVER ask the fan to leave, nor would any of the officers under his command. In his words, "I enforce the law. I don't make it up as I go along. I can't and won't do anything to anyone who is not breaking the law."

Any other suggestions? The name isn't permanent just yet, it's the one we like best right now.
If you won't this new group to grow and conitnue, I would suggest a name associated with Bama football, not a coach. No matter how succesful Mike is, he won't be the Bama coach forever. (Were we ever able to get that God-forsaken plaid off of the Coleman floor?")

I love your idea and wish you well, but Mike's Maniac's sounds like a knock-off of any number of basketball student groups who were basically knock-offs of the Cameron Crazies.

Nope, no joke. It's not just me that has had people evicted from the stadium. Our section gets along quite well and it's usually a large group asking the yahoo to sit down.

Yes, I've seen several people tossed out. The cops may have used a different excuse to do it, but they were tossed nonetheless.

As far as your "brothers" quote goes, that's laughable. Maybe thats why he's a sergent instead of a sergeant. What's your bro's name? I'll ask for him next time.
