Mizzou's Stadium

When Mizzou plays in the SEC next year at least their stadium will be full for most every home game -- not sure about Vandy on that one.

Yep. And I'm unsure why they would have agreed to expand their stadium when they'll be the fourth smallest in the new conference, having three that are smaller in terms of capacity?

Mizzou will never beat Cardinals baseball for fans. The rest of the SEC really doesn't have this problem with the possible exception of Vandy and the Titans. SEC east teams certainly won't be a better draw than traditional rivals such as Oklahoma, Kansas teams, etc. The Aggies and Mizzou are both playing .500 ball this year. Can someone tell me again how this improved the SEC? Will these teams really increase overall tv revenue for the league?

As a lifelong Mizzou fan, I can assure you that the enthusiasm for football overtook basketball at Mizzou about 8 yrs ago when Brad Smith burst onto the scene and resurrected our program, then Chase Daniel, then Blaine Gabbert, now James Franklin. All the while, Quin Snyder was running our bball program into the ground until Mike Anderson cleaned up his mess, but now he is a Hog and we have Frank Haith, a guy no one is sure what to think about at this point. We love our bball too, but football team gets all the love until bball team gets into conference play in January.

As to the Cardinals taking away from Mizzou, not really at all. Unless the Cards get to the World Series, their season is done in September. Many people in StL own Cards, Rams, Blues and Mizzou gear. Just like Mizzou folks in KC have Chiefs, Royals and Mizzou gear. Missouri does have 5 major sports franchises, so they can detract somewhat from Mizzou if they are doing well, but everyone still follows them pretty closely, and even moreso if Mizzou is having a great season.

As to the attendance yesterday, yes 61k for a game against Texas is not great. Was disappointed myself. Missouri needs to step up in that department. The 11a kickoff kept a good 5-7k people away. Was hoping for a 2:30 or 6p kickoff just because I knew it would draw closer to 70k. Our 4-5 record entering the game didn't help either. Not a good excuse, but you have to understand that Missouri sports fans are moody and many have been disappointed with how the season has gone.

As to the attendance draw for the SEC, it will be huge. Fans in Missouri are very excited for this move. Outside of OU and Neb (who is now in Big 10), fan interest in some of our traditional rival games has waned. We play ku at Arrowhead stadium now so that is a mutual draw. Many here are very excited for the prospects of SEC teams making their way to Columbia and I expect capacity crowds.

Finally, our stadium needs upgrading and has been in the works for atleast a few years. The SEC move has spurred a huge uptick in donations approaching $150M, much of which will go toward expanding and improving the football stadium. Capacity will be ~85k with added suites and so on. It will be a nice stadium when all is said and done.

I've heard and read reports that the Mizzou fans were chanting SEC! SEC! at Texas toward the end of the game. You can pretty much bet that Texas gets that treatment again when they fall to to the Aggies on the 26th.

Hey guys...Mizzou Fan here. First post and wanted to say that we are honored and excited about being a part of your great conference! Thank you for helping us get out of a very dysfunctional conference run by Texas. I attend all games and beating Texas yesterday was a great farewell present to give them on our way out! Our student section had an SEC sign and did in fact chant "SEC". We are rooting for the Aggies to give them a farewell present as well...maybe because we beat the Aggies on their home turf this year, and have won our last 3 outings with them. We did lose our best RB Josey (not the Missourian Josey Wales in the movie :) ) yesterday with an ACL /MCL /Petellar Tendon Tear....underwent surgery this morning...not good. :( I Agree with the post by the Mizzou fan above regarding Missouri fans. We are going to expand the stadium to 85K in the very near future. I also agree that our fans are pumped about bringing SEC teams into Columbia. We hope many will travel to Columbia and I have traveled into SEC country before and I can say that you won't be disappointed with tailgating at Mizzou! Our fan base is very welcoming and I think you will find the majority friendly and passionate about our team.

I would also let you know that the internet boards are crawling with kansas trolls pretending to be Missouri fans stirring up trouble. We have hated kansas since the Red Legs burned Osceola in 1861 during the civil War..we then sacked Lawrence two years later and burned it to the ground in 1863. You will only hear about the Lawrence raid from the media...not that it was a retaliatory attack after they killed innocent civilians 2 years earlier. Right now we are the villains of the Big 12 because we had the guts to stand up to Texas and OU and now are going to the premiere athletic conference in the country. They are very jealous and very angry we left! Missouri is the 4th team to leave...Colorado...Nebraska...A&M..and Mizzou. We did try to hold things together but when Texas and OU tried to go to the Pac 12 that was the final straw for us..they stated they wanted to save the conference but then tried to leave...Missouri is the "show me" state and they showed us their true colors.

I think you will find that Mizzou will rise to the level of competition they play. They will be no doormat in the East. They do not get a lot of National Media attention (yet) but have put up some amazing numbers under Coach Pinkel's regime. Last 4 seasons were 10 win seasons and we are rebuilding now. Our last 3 QB's are in the NFL. I truly believe we will compete in the East and have high expectations for next year. Our Aggie friends have to go through you guys and I don't envy them at all! I have been a Bama fan as a kid and always loved the SEC so this really feels like we are going home. Missouri is a very diverse state with some solid southern roots. I think you guys will come around in a few years and look at having us join your great conference as a good move. We will do our best to earn your respect! Roll Tide......

Welcome!!!

The Aggies and Mizzou are both playing .500 ball this year. Can someone tell me again how this improved the SEC? Will these teams really increase overall tv revenue for the league?

I'll start with the whole playing .500 ball thing. Firstly, according to Sagarin, Missouri has the most difficult schedule in the nation. Now, I don't agree with that but I do agree they've had a very difficult schedule. As to A&M, they lost by one point to Oklahoma St. and 4 points to Arkansas. Clearly, they are better than their record indicates (which might be why Sangarin has them in the top ten, once again don't agree with that but it's an indication).

Having said that, would we prefer Oklahoma? The SEC West has 3 of the top 6 BCS teams, it's so nuts that we're debating three way tie scenarios and scenarios in which the #3 team in the BCS might not go to a BCS bowl game. But yeah, we don't want these top 30 attendance, competitive teams, we need the SEC West to have 4 of the top 6 BCS teams because that's just the standard the SEC holds! Well, much like the fact that someone has to lose in the Big 12, if Oklahoma was in the west one of those teams would have at least two losses, and that's just all there is to it.

Finally, the SEC gains significantly by adding Missouri and Texas A&M. I can start with the fact that both are top 30 in football attendance. People can try to knock the programs, but for instance Missouri has better attendance than Miami, Georgia Tech, and West Virginia. When you are talking about a 14 team conference out of 120 teams, top 30 attendance is cherry picking. Secondly, both come from a state with large populations. Texas in particular is great because of the number of recruits they produce, and Missouri is great because of two major markets, and the fact that Missouri is the only D1 program in the state.

So, what does the SEC gain? Well, they get two good, well supported football programs, but not quite murderous Oklahoma level programs (not a bad thing, the SEC has enough of that). They gain a foothold into some fantastic TV markets, so everyone gets richer. And finally, they gain traction into areas that are full of recruits. So, to summarize the SEC retains the current level of football support without really destroying the balance, they get richer, and the SEC coaches have more fertile recruiting territory.

Texas has over 50,000 more kids playing high school football than the second place state. Missouri, at 23,000 playing high school football has more than every SEC state but Texas, Florida, and Georgia. Simply put, as a pair Texas A&M and Missouri might be the best possible additions the SEC could have made.

This season Missouri would have a good chance of beating Georgia or Arkansas in the SEC. They are definitely in that category. Having watched Mizzou this year, the running back Josey (I think thats his name?) is a terror, and the QB who is very good will return next year.

It's so funny to me how people take teams lightly due to perception. Missouri is legit, talent-wise. Gary Pinkle, believe it or not, may be one of the better coaches in the SEC East next year. They have a GREAT shot of winning the east next year.

We hope many will travel to Columbia and I have traveled into SEC country before and I can say that you won't be disappointed with tailgating at Mizzou! Our fan base is very welcoming and I think you will find the majority friendly and passionate about our team.

I will definitely travel to Columbia but I heard from several Ole Miss friends that they were treated terribly in Columbia and the fans were more interested in heckling/talking smack than welcoming them to campus. Said there was little hospitality even from the non hecklers.

My friends are great guys and have traveled to many UM games and have had no issues. It will be interesting to see what type of image the Missouri fan base gets after it's first year in the SEC.

I'm still not sold on Mizzou but thanks to a couple great posts in this thread form Mizzou fans I'm coming around. Looking forward to next year already.

In general, I have no bone to pick with MO fans having met several over the years at our tailgate in Norman, OK.

We make it a point to welcome visitors to Norman and share our Miller High-Life but an awful lot of the MO fans just give us a suspicious look or pretend they didn't hear our offer.
Granted, a few accept our hospitality and seem like down home folks. Overall, they just don't seem to have the zeal fans of other teams have. The Tide fans who came here a few years ago were wonderful. The OU fans who made the trip to T-Town the following year returned with nothing but praise.

Have never personally attended a game in Columbia so have no first-hand comment in that regard.

Hopefully, the conference change will ignite MO Football Fever.
