More than Half of America Gets More in Welfare than it Pays in Taxes

One reason for that is that state disability services have, for many years now, worked assiduously to get people moved from state disability service (DDS) to social security.

Which is a great plan (at least fir the states) until the federal checks start of bounce. Then it will be not so great, for a lot of people.

I’m 29. I wonder where social security will even be when I’m 65...

If democrats (socialists) are in control, there will not be any... socialist and Democrats love to spend other peoples money. It is what they’re based on.

Keep America capitalist and let the free market work… That is why America is doing so well in the first 2 years of a Trump capitalist run government.

If the Democrats win the midterms, watch the stock market plunge and costs go up.

Just sayin....look at the history of socialism.

Back in August when I visited the local SS office, without getting into a lot of discussion.....I got the feeling via the employees there was a fair share of people "milking the system".

These aren't the people who paid in for most of their working life and are simply drawing their retirement benefit.

It's the ones drawing disability.

I don't know any other details but it was an eye-opener for me, for what it's worth.

=======

Thanks for posting the article and for the discussion.

And democrats want to give more of your money away.

They want to take away your tax breaks (assuming you work) to pay people more freebies for votes.

Nothing is free in this life....somebody is paying for it.

So what? The rich can afford to give up at least half of their income to help everyone else. We need redistribution of income from the top down!
Yep it won't be rich that gives up anything it will be the middle man, who will have to give up
his hard earned savings

Again - your bias shows with every post concerning our economy.
Nothing “bad” about the SS program - you just don’t like it so it must be evil.
Educate yourself, Princess - the government has a large payment to make to the SS trust fund in 2020 (yes, I have actually read and do understand how it works) a very large payment. Republican Congress wants to keep that money to give to their friends.
Bad program - drivel like that coming from you on this topic is to be expected, I guess.

Watch out. This one is troll level "master." Pops in, insults, doesn't respond with substance. Excellent point made about how twofbyc redefined welfare to suit his/her argument. Any response to it........no.

SS is a lovely program with an even lovlier idea. But given that the govt has regrettably pillaged it's coffers inappropriately time and again, it gives the whole system a bad name.

"Educate yourself, Princess."

This has got to be a kid in college or some 15 year old that has it all figured out. Seriously.

"I'MRIGHTYOU'RESTUPIDI'MRIGHTYOURSTUPID"

That's every single post you make.

Do you even buy your own groceries? If you did, you’d know costs have been going up.
Here’s a clue: selling something that’s less in volume but without lowering the price is COSTS GOING UP.
I’ve got a dozen examples, but go to the grocery store and see for yourself.

I wish people would go ask someone who actually knows, what “disability” according to the SSA actually means.
It doesn’t mean you are in a wheelchair.

You cannot do work that you did before;

SSA decides that you cannot adjust to other work because of your medical condition and

Your disability has lasted or is expected to last for at least one year or to result in death.

This is a strict definition of disability.

There is however gross abuse of that part of SS, much perpetrated by unscrupulous lawyers and their greedy clients.

I thoroughly believe that the socialistic program of welfare (I'm specifically referencing the old food stamp/ currently SNAPS I think) is a good program at it's core, like SS.

I wouldn't have been able to live with my family coming up without it, and that we with two adults working blue collar factory work full time. The hard truth, my mother should. NEVER have had my sister or I. Had she have not had kids, she would have lived a much better higher quality of life (fiscally anyways).

There are many dual military couples, full time workers, that get WIC because their pay when young and enlisted is pretty haggard. I feel the program, in all honesty, serves more as a safety net for poor decision making. I still don't think I'd want it removed.

But provisions like drug testing, or only being able to use it for food....I'm all about that.

It’s lawyers paying off judges - they make the final determination. Documented case in WV that made the news, and it probably happens elsewhere but not to that extent.
Calling them “judges” is a stretch.
Let me define it for you:
The “court” will look at why you claim disability (and without doctors- I mean plural- signing off on it, it becomes a non starter); they then look at what type of work you were doing when you first became “disabled” (or the last work you did), and usually go back about 5-7 years in your work history to assess your skills. ONLY IF you cannot work 40 hours doing what your skills qualify you to do can you even possibly qualify for disability.
So it usually only applies to people who do some type of manual labor in their job, or their “disability” doesn’t allow them to stand or sit for extended periods of time, or lift anything heavy.
Again, they have a “consultant” (who is present for physical hearings) and will advise the judge if one’s skills will allow them to “seek” gainful, full time employment. This is the person (if there truly is an injury or affliction that’s permanent) who decides whether you’re disabled or not; at least, they tell the judge what they think and it’s my understanding that judges take their recommendations very seriously (as well as the doctors).
I don’t doubt there are lots who fall into the trap - you can only earn less than 1200 a month (gross) if you’re on disability, and you’ll only get in SSDI benefits basically the same amount you’d get if you could retire at that point in time.
So if the legitimacy of the lawyer, doctors, consultant and “judge” are above reproach, there’s no problem.
For there to be one, probably at least two or three of those four would be corrupt.

There are many things to consider. My dad (RIP Old Man) was a pipe fitter at Goodyear. He blew out 4 Disks in his back while working on a tire press. After seeing a few company doctors, they finally sent him to Bham, where after 5 spinal surgeries and a staff infection that almost killed him, He was medically retired from Goodyear.

He was 34 and I was 10 when this happened. His Union sent him to a lawyer. The old man could hardly walk upright, and couldn't lift anything over 20 pounds per his doctors, but he wanted to work. Obviously his pipefitting days were over. He talked with his Union rep and lawyer about finding work and was basically advised that SS was the best option due to insurance, not being able to stand, walk, or even sit for long periods, etc.

He got his SS disability. It ended up being around 2200 bucks a month. His retirement check from Goodyear was 280 a month (He had 11 years in the company) and he got 300 a week in worker's comp, so around 3700 a month tax free. Not terribly bad in the mid 1980's. He was making pretty much exactly the same thing when he passed on year ago, and that same money didn't go ENAR as far. He was always thankful for the benefits and compensation and gave all the credit to his Union. There are folks who get in a bad situation and don't have the same benefits he did. I don't know how we would have made it on SS alone...

All in all, not a fair compensation for never being able to hunt, play football in the yard, or basically participate in anything a teenage son does...There are tons of people who do scam the system, and all through my life I heard his friends make comments about how nice it must be to be retired at 40, living the good life, etc. Not so much...

I just want to preface that I am not trying to be snarky here. This is just adding up some numbers and drawing some conclusions.

Just doing the math, that comes out to be around 884,800$ in SSD. (2200 * 32 years (2017-1985) * 12 months)

I would imagine that this is far greater than he ever put in in taxes.

So did you intend to close with a story that so perfectly sums up how the social safety net can work in America or was that accidental?

;) As my dad raised me alone, I am 100% a product of that system. But I think it is also a good illustrator of just how much out of balance the system can be, and how important it is to be diligent concerning those that would try and scam the system. You are 100% correct, being injured so young, he put in only a fraction of what he got out.

He also felt shame, "not being a man", because he couldn't work. There are a lot of folks out there that aren't made like that. Had a distant uncle- in- law that got disability for a "neck injury". Went on to a full time job as a handyman...cash only of course. He also raced dirt track for several years with his "disability". Talk about an uncomfortable family dynamic: Half of my family wanted to report the fraud but didn't because Pawpaw forbade it, said it would tear the family apart.

There are plenty of opportunities to buy cheaper groceries somewhere in this country....it’s called the free market.

It’s not the government’s job to buy groceries, healthcare, etc for everyone in a capitalist run country.

If you want to live in a socialist/communist country go there and watch them limit your groceries, healthcare, and income.
