Mullen to Florida

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

He was probably the best coach out there. I think If Spurrier stays away enough then Mullen will probably take the East away from Kirby in the coming years.

Bazza thoughts?

IMHO we could have done a lot worse.

I like Coach Mullen but I just don't know if he's "the one".

As I have posted here before....if we don't have the right QB, I don't care who our coaches are....we're not going to be competitive at an acceptable level.

All these Florida fans saying Coach Mullen is such a great developer of QB's. Heck....it's my opinion that you never know how a QB is going to turn out and a lot of seems to just boil down to luck. Of course there's more to it than that...but getting the right player to begin with makes ALL the difference in the world.

I do feel that Coach Mullen will be a better fit with Florida's administration and perhaps do better at PR than Coach Mac did. I liked Coach Mac but as many here said....he just didn't seem to fit and that's of course very important for success especially at a place like Florida (with so many so-called entitled fans...lol).

And this may sound a little shallow but I like that our new head coach keeps himself in good physical shape and I also think his wife is pretty hawt! :p

Recruiting should work out well too, given Coach Mullen's tenure in the league. Looking forward to watching how we finish up this year.

It's so weird though.....seems like only yesterday we were welcoming Coach McElwain. Time really does fly....

Welcome Coach Dan and Megan Mullen!

I do believe he's the best coach available and has been for a while. I think people had questions on if Dak carried him to success at MSU. Once he developed Fitzgerald and very easily could've had a 10 win year this season if he were healthy, IMO it solidified him as a top coach. He'll kill at Florida. They're not far off, as Mac left them in decent position. There's a young QB in place to be developed. Defense is always competitive. Recruiting is in the backyard, and nation wide due to the brand. Safer bet than Chip Kelly

If I were a Florida fan, I would have loved to have gotten Bob Stoops. I think this is a solid hire by Florida and way better than anything Tennessee is going to get.

If he can handle the pressures that comes with being the HC at a school like Florida, it will be a great hire, he will no doubt have an upgrade of talent to run his offense..I bet he will miss not having the spotlight shining on him like he had it at Miss St..

Time sure flies by when you fire your coach before he finishes year 3.
Anyway, I must agree on the QB thing. Dak Prescott went to a bottom feeder of the SEC and is now the starter of an NFL program. Certain things can stand out but sometimes you just cannot tell.

I'm a bit shocked.....not totally shocked.....but a bit.

I thought for sure they were going to get Scott Frost?

I can't believe he'd stay at UCF instead or go to Nebraska even with that being his Alma Mater. It would be MUCH easier to be successful in the SEC East right now than the BIG10.

But congrats to Mullen. He'll probably be a thorn in Kirby's tail every year now. Looks like the Fla/UGA rivalry will get interesting again.

But better than that the real loser will continue to be Tennessee. That dumpster fire is going to keep on burning for sure now.

Gator Fans:

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I introduce to you the University of Florida's 27th head football coach, Dan Mullen.

As we embarked on this coaching search a couple of weeks ago, there were key traits we were looking for in the new head coach, such as a strong work ethic and great competitiveness. We wanted to determine if he had the toughness and confidence to lead our young men and be the face of this program. Coach Mullen embodies these traits and is ready for the challenges ahead.

I also wanted Florida football to be fun again. Fun for our fans, student-athletes, staff and this University.

Dan Mullen certainly checks those boxes and so many more. He will put together an organized plan to compete for championships and make us all proud.

The search was exhaustive, one that has included countless conversations with people in the college football industry and a thorough review of statistical and analytical data trends on numerous candidates.

In the end, I strongly believe Dan is the most prepared candidate to have immediate and long-term success at the University of Florida. Coach Mullen is one of the best offensive minds in all of college football, and has an unbelievable track record in tutoring successful quarterbacks (such as Alex Smith, Chris Leak, Tim Tebow, Dak Prescott and Nick Fitzgerald.)

Coach Mullen will do a tremendous job in developing accountability and toughness through a well-coordinated strength and conditioning program. Dan will work closely with the coaching staff, academic advising staff and administrative team to give every student athlete he coaches the opportunity to grow and excel at a high level athletically, academically and socially.

Dan has obviously been a part of some of the greatest moments in Florida football history when he was the offensive coordinator for the Gators from 2005-08. Those teams won two national championships, two SEC Championships, featured the first sophomore Heisman Trophy winner and won 23 of 25 games in The Swamp.

He built similar great moments at Mississippi State, leading them to a school-record, eight-consecutive bowl berths, and to the school's first-ever number one ranking during a five-week stretch in 2014, which included the Bulldogs earning the No. 1 spot in the inaugural College Football playoff ranking.

On a personal level, this was a challenging situation because I'm proud of the job Dan did at MSU, my alma mater. However, as the Gators' Athletic Director, my sole responsibility is to make decisions that are best for the University of Florida, and that is why Dan Mullen is our new head football coach.

Thanks for your continued support as we move into the next chapter of Florida football and for the loyalty and passion you have for Gator Athletics.

Having spent years at MSU Mullen knows how to spot overlooked talent and develop it. This is a trait Saban also had (whether CNS has it still in a time when every 5* considers his program is an interesting question). I think Mullen will do a nice job. Whether he overtakes UGa is unknown and will require a bit of good fortune.

With the talk of Chip Kelley and Scott Frost I would imagine there is a little disappointment with this hire among the UF faithful.

He's solid and steady no doubt, but will he be spectacular?

On the bright side, they make Tennessee look like they just hired a genetically engineered Bryant Saban combo.

If I were a Florida fan, I would have loved to have gotten Bob Stoops. I think this is a solid hire by Florida and way better than anything Tennessee is going to get.
Stoops isn't coming out of retirement.

I would much rather have Mullen over taking the chance on Scott freaking Frost.

I thought that Tennessee would have a chance at Mullen, and would have said they were more successful than Florida if they got Kelly or Frost. Mullen could have a top-10 team next season at Mississippi State. It's amazing what he's done there. Seriously.

I have never been impressed with Chip Kelly and quite frankly I agree that Florida is better off with Kelly in Los Angeles. Two years as a HC is kind of iffy, time will tell how Frost will fare. I said from day one that Dan Mullen was exactly what Florida needed. He is young, 45, apparently can find talent where others can't and develop those players to a high level. The other good news is he is now in a gold mine of talent and no longer has to take leftovers, unless he wants to. With Smart, Muschamp and now Mullen could the pendulum be swinging back toward the SEC? Stay tuned.

The allure of bringing back the good ol' days was a big part of this hire. No doubt about it. Florida fans should be excited. He's been consistent at Starkville with his hands tied in recruiting. I think he will supplant Smart sooner rather than later. Smart better get his championship run year in soon (this year, next year) because I think Mullen is going to reassert Florida as the East alpha dog.

Mullen will be a raving success at UF...I believe MSU will slide into the bottom tier unless they can make an equally good hire. OM's move...even on probation...will hurt them as he is known in Mississippi.

State is one of the all-time worst power conference football programs. It takes a good one to finish above .500 there consistently for nearly a decade.
