I was my first game at Bryant-Denny and the facility is beautiful!

Defensively, we were good, but not great. Having said that, I can't imagine a more difficult team to play with so many inexperienced players. The UH offense is pretty good and they wore us out with the shuffle pass.

Offensively we were fairly good. I have seen a lot of commentary on this subject. This my take on the subject. After watching CMS for the last three years, I think we can say he is conservative by nature. Nothing wrong with that, Bryant and Stallings were pretty conservative and they now have statues in front of the stadium.

It was good to see CMS go for it a fourth down a couple of times last night, but that is about as risky as it gets and that is what most folks are talking about, in my opinion. Even CMS jokes about throwing to the tight ends in press conferences. We did throw to the TEs last night and it worked. I understand you have to have the right players to try different things and make them work.

I don't think I have ever seen a screen pass from CMS. I may be wrong and probably am, but it is just an observation. We may sometimes throw to the tailback, more as a safety valve, and it is usually successful. I guess I am just wondering why we appear to have a limited play book when we now have the players to run just about any kind of play we need too. An end around play almost seems like a trick play to me.

As long as the wins keep coming, it's OK with me. It seems to me the offense is limited by our own imagination. I am certainly not advocating running a buch of trick plays, but do we have any? It makes us easier for opponents to prepare for when we are no threat to try anything different or risky.

I'm sure some on this site can and probably will punch holes in all of my comments and that is fine, after all, it is just my opinion.
 
The first time they converted on (4th and 1) I was so nervous. Sometimes those kind of plays can set a mentality about one defense or the other.

Remember the Florida game? Coach Meyer went for a touchdown on fourth and one and we stopped then on like the two yard line. I remember the crowd went insane and that sent a message to Coach Meyer that you might be able to run that play back in Utah, but not in the SEC!

I loved every minute of it. :)
 
I'd love to see a play where J.Johns motions from RB out to the flat, and then JPW laterals out to J.Johns, who then tosses it down field to a wide open Keith Brown...

I'm sure that very play is in the play book somewhere. Maybe a toss sweep pass though.
 
I forget what game, but it was awhile back....

Prothro was in on the play, and it was a "super" trick play. It is really hazy but I think it was a play that had our guys shuffling the ball back and forth as they ran down the field.

I want to say it was against Arkansas but I'm not sure. I remember thinking to myself "wow, just wow"

The play didn't convert (I think we had to get a TD), but it was still amazing to watch. The strange thing about the play, with CMS being so conservative in his play calling, is that the trick play came out of no where.

Just thought I'd share that, but I'm not sure if everyone remembers what I am talking about.

I remember that after the South Carolina game we tried to be a little bit more creative against Arkansas and CMS was criticized for it. JessN I remember said something along the lines of "the Alabama coaches suddenly realized that they had a lot of shiny, fancy toys and wanted to play with them all at once." If CMS keeps it simple, then he's being too "vanilla" as my dad kept saying last night. Now, I was not completely happy with the play calls, but last year, CMS was continually criticized before and after the Florida game for his play calls but he also kept winning, and not a Dubosian I've-got-so-much-talent-I-can't-help-but-win fluke. And the AU debacle was more than just play calling. This was game #1. There's still time for improvement.
 
I'm just glad they didn't bring that ugly mascot into BDS. I would hate to see the carnage on ESPN replayed over and over as 90,000 charged the field.

Also, I noticed Shula looking for June Jones after the game for the traditional handshake. I think Jones just ran off the field. Someone correct me if wrong but that's how it looked on ppv.

:BigA: You know, I have noticed one thing about BAMA fans - we just ain't happy if we ain't ripping the coaches -players -stadium or somthing. I remember when WE were complaining about the last coach to win a NC - he just did not have it in him to run up the big score!!! I remember my Dad talking about the dummy from Arkansas - heck all he wanted to do was win by one or two points - we needed a lot more points on the board - but now that the coach that won the last NC is no longer coaching he has gone into sainthood and the one from Arky probably could walk on water, we've got this dummy from Miami that is afraid to run trick plays - you know what? Trick plays scare the bejesus out of me!!!! l like just steady rock and load football!!! I like the Mike Shula and Joe Kines version of CRIMSON TIDE FOOTBALL.... Trick plays? let the lizards down in florida do them - BAMA is all about headsup football!!!! :BigA:
 
Conservative does not get anymore you have to score points ie touchdowns.
I am not for throwing the ball around 40 plus times a game either you need a good system don't think we have it.
 
well here is my $.02.......
this is the first game of the year,hawaii showed a different
defence than what was expcted, they were one of the best offense
in the country last year,and probibly going to be this year again,yet we
out scored them which is most important,second we had more total
yards,third we had less penalties,fourth we didnt turn the ball over
and yet all i read about is "we suck on offence"
GIVE ME A BREAK PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
remember this is only the first game
