My take on the game yesterday, THE GOOD, THE BAD, THE UGLY

The GOOD:

THe Offensive line blocked well, Leron McClain blocked very well and Ken Darby is amazing. It's almost impossible to consistently stop Darby.

Aaron Johns looked pretty good for a true freshman in a big game on national tv. It's pretty obvious he needs more reps in practice to fully grasp the offense and needs some serious time in the weight room to put on about 20 lbs to be fully ready for SEC play next year. Still, he looked pretty good.

The defense (other than sleep walking in the first MSU drive) looked good. Blazing speed on that defense, pretty good pressure all nite and what, 3 or 4 sacks?

Kudos to CMS and CDR for having the guts to try Prothro at QB for that one play. It really made a difference. For the Tide to have a chance against LSU and Auburn, that's the type of resourcefulness it'll take to win.

The BAD:

Spencer Pennington is THE man at QB but it's pretty obvious he can't throw the deep ball. The pass to Keith Brown (I think that's right) in the first half was a fluke and badly thrown ball. That doesn't mean that Spencer can't be effective but it seems to me that he's most effective when his passes are the dink and dunk passes and maybe a few medium routes. He has GOT to stop visually locking on with his eyes to his intended receiver. That's a terrible mistake that will cost the Tide badly in the next 2 games if he keeps doing it.

As good as the Tide defense was, they were kind of sleeping out there in the MSU first drive and should have shut them down. Tackling was sloppy and I kind of got the impression from the body language that they thought they could just show up and MSU would roll over.

The staff did a good job with the game plan on both sides of the ball but I'd like to see the offense mix in 1-2 more unusual plays to throw the opposing D off balance a little.

Brandon Brooks for whatever reason doesn't seem to concentrate well enough to handle punts. I know he's got blazing speed but Jeez, you gotta hold onto that ball!! I hope Prothro or Caddell handle the punts from here on out.

The UGLY:

Could the refs have been any worse than they were? They were maybe the worst I've ever seen. MSU was flagrantly holding all night long and to my recollection, only one holding call all night. Brooks nearly getting his head ripped off on a flagrant facemask and no call. It was like the refs were doing everything in their power to keep MSU in the game.

ESPN's fawning over Sylvester Croom, like he was the love child of Coach Bryant or something. Don't get me wrong, I don't put that blame on SC. I admire him, he's a good man and I would have been pleased if he'd been hired at Alabama but the fact is, Mike Shula is our coach and the decision was made about a year and a half ago. Why go on questioning that in the media? I just got sick and tired of hearing about SC every 5 minutes in the game. I just wanted to scream, "SHUT UP!!!!!!". I hope Croom does well every game except for the Alabama game but the jury is still out on what kind of HC he is and I get tired of hearing ESPN implying he's great when no one knows yet.

ESPN's implying that Alabama is just a state full of racists by showing George Wallance and mentioning the Klan. Thanks, ESPN. Nothing like distorting the truth and implying that the reason Croom didn't get the job due solely to racism. I get so tired of hearing from folks that have never lived in Alabama, that because of the past naturally assuming that Alabama is still have way, that we're still a bunch of crackers that routinely burn crosses in yards, lynch black people, etc.

OK, flame away but that's the way I saw it.

THE GOOD: Darby with 200 yards rushing. Pennington 9/15 2 td, 119 yds passing. Bama, 5 sacks for the night. #2 AC getting on the field. Bama gets winning season and bowl eligible. Brian Bostick 47 yard FG.

THE BAD: The Zebra's. The lick Carlos Andrews put on MSU QB Omarr Conner, that was a good kind of bad ;) Sounded like two Bighorn Sheep butting heads.

THE UGLY: ESPN's slant on the game.

Maybe you can answer this. I understand that when you're a predominantly running team that you have to "keep the defense honest" by going down the field with the passing game form time to time. But with that being said, when doing that do we have to throw the same pass EVERY TIME? The majority of the time when we've run the ball three or four times in row we go to the EXACT SAME pass pattern. The deep vertical sideline pass. WHY???!!! Pennington CANNOT MAKE THIS THROW!!! It is such a low percentage pass that it really is a waste of a play. The same goes with the fade route to the corner of the endzone when we get in the redzone. Why do we run this? It is such a difficult pass and low percentage pass at that, yet we keep attempting it.

From my armchair qb position, if I had a qb that has trouble passing the ball to the degree Spencer does, I'd give the guy high percentage passes to increase his chance of getting a completion.

With that being said, all in all we played very well. The defense clamped down in the second half. Darby is a beast to bring down and McClain is a human Mac Truck when blocking. I'd lik to see McClain run a seam route down the middle of the field out of the backfield from time to time.

I like what the announcers said regarding all of our injuries. If we'd not had the rash of injuries we had we'd be competing for a BCS bowl and looking how our defense has panned out they're probably right.

Shula is truly handcuffed at offense right now. But we're bowl eligible and hopefully coming to Shreveport (where I live).

If you had listened to the broadcasters, they quoted Joe Kines as saying the defense would be slow for the first couple of series after a week off and then be back to game speed. How prophetic of him!

Bill Curry did say that Bama had 17 NC's

Other than that, I agree with all said above.....I wanted to scream SHUT-UP already also! I hope CSC does well also, but, give it a break!

Because the receiver is behind the defense and wide freakin' open!

The play is there every time they call it. Spencer is just 2 yards off.

If Spencer gets lucky and leads him by 2 yards, the play will break for a touchdown. If Spencer were good enough to lead him every time, we'd scare the holy hell out of everyone else on our schedule.

He also completed this throw midway through the game for a 40 yard completion. If he hits it once out of every 4 or 5 times for a 25 yard+ gain...keep chunkin' it!

Good: Darby, the O-line, Prothro, the D, Spencer's best performance despite the 2 picks, and BOWLING BABY!

Bad: More nagging injuries to Closner (neck stinger), Johnston (concussion), W. Britt (foot/ankle), Stamps (ankle), Bryant (ankle?), Peprah (hammy)

Ugly: the refs, ESPN's coverage (from the sounds of it), and Judge

The good: Darby, The O-line, Wallace and the rest of our D, Deuce getting to play, the excitement and enthusiasm our entire team played with. Oh yeah and the Crimson Cabaret before the 4th quarter....Houndstooth hats, football jerseys, and black tight shorts....had my mind off football for just a second.

The bad: THE REFS. Absolutely horrible.

The ugly: The scrum on the State sidelines. They just better be glad that Freddie Roach and Mark Anderson didn't get in there.

did anyone else notice that MSU got 5 downs before the half?
with less than 2 minutes left in the first half, 1st and 10, MSU runs, Bama gets flagged with incendital face mask tacked on to the end of the run, 1st and 5. Isnt incendental added on to the down? Not given another down? I have the game on tape and plan on reveiwing that, but correct me if I am wrong. It should have been 2nd and five. right?

I thought the defense played well after the first series. It seemed like MSU did a few things that we were not prepared for on their first drive, but Kines adjusted quickly to what they were doing on offense. I just hope we start a little better against LSU and Aubarn. We won't have much time to adjust in those games.

Let's see now, did people in Bama overturn and burn cars when they won the '92 championship. NO! Did people in Boston act like idiots when the Red Socks won the World Series? YES! Now who looks like the rednecks. ESPN has a selective memory.

McClain's block on Prothro's TD run was a thing of beauty.

Picture perfect block.

As witnessed by the TD pass he caught, if we throw to him coming out of the backfield with a head of steam, he will score and hurt someone in the process!

I've been impressed with how this team has continually picked up the slack whenever someone goes down.

I have to admit that after seeing the refs miss the facemask on the KO return after several really questionable calls I started to wonder if the black ref was trying to help out the black coach. But later on they nailed MSU in several drive killing holding calls etc... so I really don't think that was the case at all, they just missed the facemask. Overall I think the refs were about on par with what we always get with SEC officials. I know croom would NEVER want any of that kind of help.

As for the play calling, We know we need to hit deep balls, we know Pennington isn't good at that. It looked to me that Pennington was basically throwing jump balls, our freshman wideouts are all tall, you throw the ball up and hope they come down with it, it worked once last night and helped lead to a huge TD, they tried it again and we just missed but it resulted in MSU having the ball on the 3, which resulted in MSU getting put out of the game. So you don't have to complete a 80 yard bomb to make a difference. but you do need to try.

I still say Pennington is just one big game winning TD throw from being a hero for the rest of his life. He wins one of the next two games and he will be offered free drinks all of the state 20 years from now. I like his game presence, His pocket presence is outstanding, I wish Brody had that kind of calmness in the pocket.

That was the biggest mistake MSU made on the night if you ask me. It was 3rd down and Bama was going to have to punt. The defender should have just knocked the ball down instead of intercepting it. Instead they ended up with horrible field position on their own 3-yard line that led to Bama having great field position on the next series.

Pennington looks completely different from when he came in for Guillon during the S. Car game. He looked lost and that night and kept locking on to one receiver. He's definitely progressed quickly. Now if we can just get him to throw an accurate deep ball...

I bet the MSU guy that got waylaid was glad that Prothro scored so he didn't have to face the possibility of getting pancaked by Le'Ron again! I didn't notice it at the game, but I saw it on the replay where it looked like Le'Ron pointed down at him after he ran him over. Funny stuff.

no one notice the 5 downs?

A facemask penalty is added onto the end of the run AND the down is repeated. (Doesn't seem right to me either, but it is the rule). Normally though, when the penalty is tacked onto the end of the run, the result is a first down, so it rarely comes into play.
