Next year at QB?

If he was so great-he couldn't beat Guillion and Spencer? I'm not trying to flame either of these two,esp Spencer-but the fact remains that he was given a grey and not even a chance to compete with these two. Shula was obviously looking to the future, but surely Shula had to realize what the current situation was last year with our talent at QB.

There is where you are missing the point. He did beat out MG and SP. Spencer went to baseball after a meeting with Rader where Rader told him in no certain terms JPW had beat him out of his job. MG, is almost in the same situation except he's dealing with his injuy bug along with ...........

Look, we'll look back at this conversation in the fall and see....so a little patience or acceptance? These are the facts. I'm not trying to "blow you out of the water" but these are simply the facts. Rich has the same sources I do on this and you can't get any closer to what is going on at the Capstone than the sources we have on this one.

Seriously, at this point I don't even consider MG as part of our QB rotation.

meant to say....

in response to "surely Shula knew our QB situation last year..."

There is where I have a problem with Shula's approach. He is still in the NFL mentality where you put all you money with one guy. Last year, he was banking on Brodie entirely. Now, over the past summer he's saying that he's looking at giving JPW playing time early on. Why? I'm hoping he learned a lesson from last year. It's a transition process from the NFL to NCAA...here's hoping it's a quick one.

I think for all practical purposes, Coach Shula and staff learned their lesson about putting all their eggs in one basket last year since he basically gave JPW and MG all the snaps in the Spring and let Brodie sit out of the contact drills with the #1's. Plus, JPW is right there with Brodie on the 7 on 7's this Summer so he's getting the feel of the WR's as well. Personally, I hope that since Brodie knows the Offense pretty much 100% by now, JPW and maybe a healthy MG can split the reps this Fall and redshirt the 2 true Freshman.

As for JPW's talent, I think his HS accomplishments speak volumes. I agree we need to be patient and let him first take a snap of college ball before we annoint him the next Namath, but when has a Bama fan ever done that?

All you JPW haters...

JPW grayshirted for one reason and one reason only. We could only bring in 19 players in 2004. Securing a commitment from JPW was a great move, though, and one CMS could not pass up. Him grayshirting had more to do with our depth issues elsewhere than it did with him being ready to come in. Obviously heading into last year CMS thought more highly of MG and the depth he provided. I honestly think this has worked out the best for all parties. Now he has an entire spring practice running the first team offense against the first team defense before his true freshman season. That is a huge benefit.

The kid has a great arm, he has good savvy. He is confident, a little bit brash, and a little bit cocky, all in a good way. He looks the part of a QB. If you watched any clips from Spring practice, you can see that behind Brodie he has easily the best arm and quickest release. He was groomed in an offense where he learned the passing game. The level of instruction and play from his high school days can not be underestimated. He knows how to win. That is an intangible that cannot be overlooked. I personally think that getting players from winning programs is a huge plus. Winning is winning, whether it is high school or the SEC.

We will have good QB play from this point on at Alabama. We have our numbers climbing back toward full strength, and we now have competition at the position. Competition will make each one of these QBs better. Not to mention we have three kids who know how to win coming in. I can't wait to see these kids develop and get Bama back to the top.

I just want everyone to know that I am not bashing JPW hell I hope he turns out to be the best QB BAMA has ever seen, but in my personal opinion I just think he will be a good not great QB. I honestly believe that JJ will be the future. Any Kid that can throw the bomb and run for a TD will have Defenses on their toes. JPW has all the stats from HS but HS stats dont mean anything in college. My HS won state in FL 2 years in a row and our QB went to FSU in 96. Played in the National Championship game aginst TENN and he had all the stats in the world in HS and he never quite lived up to the hype. Maybe JPW will we will just have to wait and see!!!!

Bayou-"Anybody that says that John Parker Wilson is not very talented or was not highly recruited is mistaken or uninformed."

If we use your logic and all the stats you and Terry stated, then why was JPW only rated at best as a 3 star? I know the scouting services are sometimes off, but if you look at his stats, he should have been a 4-5 star. Wonder WHY???

That logic was my logic and I stand behind it. I wonder why Wilson was not rated higher myself.

If you think the Rivals and Scout star rating system are the only judge of a signee's talent then that is your right. I strongly disagree and I am not trying to change your mind. I am just articulating my opinion substantiated by facts other than stars assigned by a recruiting service. I trust the coaches a whole heck of a lot more than I do some recruiting analysts that have most likely never coached an athlete.

Rivals and Scout often disagree on the star rating of prospects and adjust their star rating up and down throughout the year. Mike Ford was rated a two star most of last year until Rivals finally watched some video on him after Tom Lemming then of ESPN recruiting got video of him and spread the word. I have seen some recruits rated 4 star by one service and 2 star by the other service at the same time. By the way Max Emfinger ranked John Parker Wilson a 5 star and Tom Lemming was very, very high on Wilson when he signed with Bama.

If you don't think a 3 star rated recruit is very good then you must disagree that RB Roy Upchurch a 3 star is Bama's top incoming signee as some believe. You probably will prefer one of Bama's 4 star rated signees.

Just in case you did not know Bama was rated as the 15th best QB class for 2005. Bama's QBs were rated lower than 7 other teams which had only one 4 star QB signee. Somehow using the Rivals "logic" one 4 star QB is ranked higher than Bama's three 3 star QBs of Wilson, Barnes, and Johns. That is not sound logic in my opinion because I think that all three of Bama's QBs could have easily been rated 4 stars based on their accomplishments their senior years.

One other thing, CS.

If there is one thing Mike Shula knows, it's quarterbacks. I would trust his judgement on signalcallers way before I would any recruiting service. He played the position and has coached it since his college career ended. He knows the position very well.

Personally, I'm getting ready for the next big QB controversey....

JPW vs. JJ

I can see it being "Watts vs. Zow II"

oh please, Lord, no! Let's sign Tebow!.....hey, I rhymed :)

Seriously though, it will probably be that way for a while, even if we did sign a blue chipper like Tebow this year. I think the ones we have now won't be as bad as the TW/AZ battle.

Jpw

I haven't heard anyone mention the most important aspect of an Alabama football player's makeup, HEART! Can anyone testify to whether JPW has an abundance of heart and determinatio0n. A good quarterback can win the games he should win while not losing the games he shouldn't lose. A great quarterback will win the games he should win, not lose the games he shouldn't lose, and will the team to a win that maybe the team shouldn't win. Willing the team to a win takes leadership, physical skills, determination, and most importantly, an abundance of heart. His heart, if it is great, will spread confidence and determination to the other players, allowing the team to come together and play as one unit. The QB is the leader of a team, and that leader must have a tremedous heart. As far as I am concerned, this aspect of a player, especially a QB, is just as important as any of his physical skills.

He's a winner. The most glowing comments I've seen about JPW have come from our DB corps who literally have raved about his talent and elusiveness. I'll take those comments as "close to fact as possible."

I agree. And, I really never fully understood the Watts vs. Zow debate fully.

I personally liked both of them. I thought Zow had an edge in passing, but Watts had the advantage in size when we were down on the goal-line when we needed to run it in.

Both were good quarterbacks with strengths in different areas.

The majority of that debate was from fans, not between the two of them. There were some "racial issues" at the time, most coming from the way the coaching staff handled situations.

Roger that, considering that our DB's may be about the best in the nation in what they do. The only hurdle JPW has to overcome is playing in front of 90,000 plus screaming fans.
