Question: Offensive playcalling

Yes, the play calling was offensive. There, I said it.

"Does that mean we should play Tua, as well?"

Sure, why not.................CNS said he is going to play, so why not?

Yes, that was a good play. The reason is because he avoided the rush and kept his eyes downfield and waited for a receiver to get open rather than tucking it and running. I'd like to see more of that.

As I said, it's hard to tell much from one game, especially when you're playing a top-ranked team. And it was the first game of the season and the first game with the new OC calling the plays. I expect to see our offense improve as the season progresses.

Yesterday on the Tuscaloosa News/Tide Sports podcast, Aaron Suttles noted Jalen seemed fine for the first quarter and a half. He was showing the improvements we heard about over the summer - staying in the pocket and looking downfield. Then, FSU made changes and started bringing more pressure, which the OL didn't handle. When that happened, Jalen resorted to what's he done for years.

One adjustment that needs to be made by the staff - figure out the best way to counter a nickel blitz. LSU started the trend last year, and others have followed. We've got to figure out a way to make defenses pay for bringing pressure from the slot.

Auburn's offense was worse than us against FSU's defense while playing GA Southern. The offense will be fine and only get better.

agreed: I'd like to see more formations where we force the nickel to play wider - i.e. the receiver the nickel is covering is further from the OT, forcing the nickel to have to cover a lot of ground to blitz, or give it away early.

We have the plays setup against it, we just have to execute. On the pass Jalen threw and caught, he pumped once before trying to throw to Harris. if he throws that instead of pumping it he beats the nickel blitz and harris probably has a pretty good gain. On another nickel blitz, hentges was WIDE OPEN just past the linebackers and jalen had time to make the throw. On the play ridley lost so many yards on, he should have been further out, away from the crowd and he beats the blitz. The guys either have to start executing those or the staff will need to implement some draw plays to get the rush up field then hammer the D with Bo...

Wouldn't that be a hot route in that vacated space...a little slant or sit down route?

Good god please fix this. It was glaringly obvious when it was about to happen and we still couldn't block it.

Jalen's tendency is to lose sight of anything downfield when he puts his head down to run. He does it too quickly. You have to keep your head up and look for open receivers downfield. Once he does this, the defense will defend the whole field, not just the 5 yards around the line of scrimmage. Defenses are looking for him to run the second the pocket breakdowns which is the reason we have become easier to defend. It is all about tendencies. The play calling is just fine. I didn't think Daboll was exceptionally creative, but Kiffin was too cute at times. Sometimes you just have to realize that your eleven on offense are better than their eleven on defense.

OTOH, Francois did complete some passes when he was practically on his back and he did it until very late in the game and he did it by hanging in under pressure and going through his progressions. Admittedly, he doesn't have Hurts' wheels, so it may be somewhat of necessity. But I do believe that there was somewhat of a contrast that's in the back of everyone's mind...

But if your going to compare the two QBs, make a full comparison. You failed to mention that Francois threw an interception, lost the game, and is out for the season. Which qb would you rather have?

But alot of this is a pre-snap read. Granted Daboll ought to be able to help him, as did CLK, but seeing an seeing a DB who is about to blitz off the edge is a presnap adjustment that has to get fixed too. It's really big boy football 101.

For those that believe Jalen hasn't progressed, do you think 2016 Jalen makes these throws?

Sad part is........ Out of bounds, holding penalty, and a drop. Not on him. Are we even discussing him if two of those plays counted?

Other than the scramble, yes (with a caveat). The other two were throws to the first read. He's always had the arm strength to get the ball there. Where we want to see development is in his ability to move to the second read if the first read isn't open. They were great throws, but not examples of the development we are all hoping to see.

Even on the scramble, the right read would have been to dump the ball off to Bo underneath to the left instead of running to the right. He had time for that and it would have dropped the pass off in the area that was opened up by the blitzing nickel and there was NO ONE covering Bo. There was only one clemson defender on that side of the field ( weak safety) and he was covering the WR downfield. Do this a couple of times and that blitz starts to slow down. Further, if you look at the FSU defensive formation, there is NO ONE defending the short underneath route in the middle of the field. Pre-snap we needed an audible to check the right slot receiver into a quick slant into that empty zone. The first example (check down to Bo) is definitely on Jalen as it was part of the play and Bo was looking for the pass. The second example might be more on Daboll than Jalen since we don't know what's been coached from that standpoint...

No one has suggested that Jalen is a poor pass thrower. The problem is two fold: He takes too long to read defenses and make passing decisions, and that results in him pulling the ball down and running with it on plays with opportunities for passing plays down the field.

The only passes that I have seen Jalen make this year with which he struggled last year are the long passes to a receiver breaking open behind the defense. He has those down. He makes the read quickly because it is the first read, and he lets the ball go in time and on target.

This is the glaring thing that stood out to me in the Fla St game. The speed of the game looked faster than the speed of his progression. He was struggling processing the defense and the reads he should make. Again, it was the first game and against possibly the fastest defense we'll face all year. But even still, there are going to be teams this season who may not have the speed Fla St does, but enough speed to force him to have to go to second and third reads. Even it teams do not have the same team speed as Fla St. They will definitely scheme to force Jalen to go through progressions and make the correct read.
