I couldn't believe how seldom we went for the edges, given TR's speed. I hope we're just saving that for later...
I hope we're saving it for later as well; but, if I remember correctly, it seems that we didn't hit the edges much last season either.

I kept saying the exact same thing during the game. Getting to the edge against better SEC teams usually doesn't go so well. But most of the PSU D isn't running at that same speed.I think we could have hit a few more 10+ runs by hitting the edges.
We played with tremendous effort all day. Can't ask for more than that.
AJ passed his first test in a very hostile environment. He will improve each week and looks very capable.
Oline played well but SEC D-lines will present more problems.
Vanilla play calling seemed by design. No problems from my view. We knew we could wear them out/ let AJ feel comfy.
Don't know why we kick off to the 10 yard line everytime (although coverage was excellent) by design?
Punting will get us beat unless it improves.

Overall, I was very satisified and even though this was not a vintage Penn State team, it was still a quality/signifcant win in my book. Our players executed the game plan, no turnovers, complete domination, and showed improvement from week 1. The team obviously has areas of opportunity to improve, but I've got confidence in our coaching staff to address those issues. As others have alluded to, I think we've barely cracked open the playbook and have kept the playcalling ultraconservative to this point on purpose. IF all we're calling is "johnny up the middle" or straight drop back pass plays once we get into the Arky and UF games, I'll get concerned, but until then I'm not worried at all. I think all that has been by design.

Great game. PSU really, really knows how to host a football game. Electric atmosphere, super cool white-out choreography, extremely loud and enthusiastic student section, spine-tingling fly-over, moving half-time remembrance of 9-11, and the classiest fans I've ever encountered anywhere. A game experience I'll never forget.
One thing in regards to the broadcast- Other than a few homer moments by Blackledge, I thought the broadcast team of Nessler/Blackledge was solid. I would go as far as to say they are the most professional duo out there right now. They certainly trump Mussberger/Herbie and Verne/Danielson, though Danielson is solid, IMHO.
I agree, and happen to think that Brad Nessler is the best play-by-play guy in the biz right now.
We just got back home and I saw a couple of things. Looks like the d lineman are not getting the push or pressure on the qb they you should with a top d. The Psu qb got hit but mostly by lbs. Psu linebackers looked almost like they knew the snap count. They are fast off the snap. The middle of ol still needs some work but were alot better. Aj did what he should, no mistakes. We meet lots of Psu fans and all but a couple were great. Very classy fans. Thanks.
Oh forgot to add can we please get a punter. It was loud and they put pressure on almost every punt but still..
Our defense isn't exactly made for d-lineman to hit the QB. It sets up multiple looks and overloads with pressure coming from linebackers and DBs from all over the field.
If you did not enjoy this game you don't like college football it show all the good from both sides. I think we had 1 PF for a face mask but it was far from the Dirt we watched from other teams. So much talent & it appears they have the Heart to go with it.
I know of this great island country where they have plenty of strong-legged kids who can punt the ball...
I'm very happy that they did it, but I think it was a very BIG mistake for Penn State to ROTATE their QB's. There was NO continuity in their offense as a result of the way they rotated. If they had kept in their first QB, the game may have been a lot closer.
I noticed several teams on TV yesterday that have kickoff specialist who can put the ball in or beyond the end-zone. Bama needs this kind of kick-off to help prevent runbacks. It looked like all of our kickoffs were between the 5 and 10 yard lines. That gives the receiving team a GREAT chance to break a big run-back! It's great to have a former high school linebacker as a kick-off specialist, but I wish he could strengthen that leg so he can really put the ball at least 10 yards farther.
AJ McCarron? I was disappointed in the number of tipped passes in the backfield. I'm glad that none were intercepted and run back. Now, he did play with poise. But this can't keep happening. I know this was an OLine problem, but some of this was AJ's fault also!
Penn State looked like they had been in the weight room in the off-season determined to improve.
One other thought: I like and respect JoePa, but it's time to go Joe. He is hurting the Penn State program! Now, I'm glad he is the coach and he has never beaten Coach Saban (at MSU or Alabama), but a head coach needs to be able to be on the sideline to get in some faces when things are not going as expected by the coaching staff. It would be and is dangerous for that OLD-timer to be on the sideline.
One question: while in the press box yesterday, I did NOT see him put on his glasses until the close to the end of the game. Does he wear CONTACTS?
