Bama Game Thread: Official PostGame Thread - Bama vs. IU...

I had a lot of time to think about this, because this was a dreadful game to watch.

I don't want to hear anymore about "fits" to DeBoer's system and instead I want to hear about fixes. The problem is not that Alabama isn't finesse enough. Alabama was thoroughly manhandled by a team that has demonstrably smaller, lower ranked players and a coaching staff that makes about half as much money. Cignetti hasn't had more time to develop this team, he has had far less resources. One team was just far better coached than the other.

I'm not saying DeBoer is a bad coach though, I think the problem is he developed a flawed philosphy (I don't think the issues are all just Milroe, or Grubb, or the favorite wipping boy of the day). I think his formative period at the FBS was his time at Indiana. That Indiana team was 8-5, DeBoer was the OC and Wommack was the DC and they showed real improvement over the previous year (5-7). He beat power conference teams with a bunch of 3 stars. He doesn't' try to physically dominate, he doesn't try to be the tougher team, he tries to outsmart the other team. He doesn't try to have a balanced offense, he lets a few play-makers on offense influence the game that's run through the QB. Their passing yards went up, their running yards went down (rushing average dropped by .7, a common theme with DeBoer) and it seemed to work.

This allowed him to overcome the 3 star liability. He's outsmarted a lot of good coaches, and he's won quite a few games he shouldn't have. Cignetti's formative FBS years were at Alabama under Saban, and what he seems to have done is demand his teams play like they're Alabama, play like they're 5 stars, even if they are just 3 stars. He doesn't draw up things as though they are 3 stars trying to overcome deficiencies, he just demands they play like 5 stars. He has a high standard and he holds them to it. They are a demonstrably smaller, weaker team that play demonstrably stronger and tougher.

DeBoer is neglecting Alabama's talent and ability to recruit by trying to overcome a weakness that he's played a part in creating. They don't need to play cute, they're big, they're physically strong. They don't need to rely on the QB entirely (at every stop he's let the run game degrade while relying heavily on the QB), they have the resources to have a good ground game. He needs to adapt to that instead of trying to overcome it, stop trying to outsmart everyone and start punching other teams in the mouth.

This is the second time on a big stage that DeBoer's team (Washington vs. Michigan) was thoroughly physically dominated, and this time it was against a team that had no business being a team that plays tougher football. He's a smart coach, but he is basically outsmarting himself at this point. He has big guys playing soft and Cignetti has small guys playing hard.

This might sound like a tale of woe though, but it's not. If DeBoer can just make the necessary changes to his system and approach that leverages the strength and power of the type of athletes Alabama can attract, this team can go from being occasionally great to consistently great.

This isn't about any philosophy, its about who someone is at their core. Teams take on the character and characteristics of their leader and DeBoer is simply not a coach that demands perfection. Coaches like Saban (and Cignetti) are, they are tough and highly demanding at it their core and reflects throughout their scheme and players.

Cignetti could run DeBoers scheme and beat us by the same score as he did today. Offensice philosophy isn't the problem.

Keenan: "I wasn't good enough and Defense wasn't good enough to stop them"
Germie: "Very glad Coach DeBoer let me come here to Bama. ... We didn't execute to best of our abilities ... which made it a rough game for us."

So for those that want to keep CKD, how long do we give him to get his players and system going? I understand we don't want to fire someone that has only been here two years. But when it seems all he does is talk around problems, stand on the sidelines looking like he's having a hemorrhoid flare up, with that look on his face, and NEVER make adjustments, what then? Any coach worth his salt should be screaming at everyone after a performance like this. Telling anyone that will listen, this is unacceptable and I'm going to do everything in my power to fix it no matter what it takes.
Getting rid of him now isn’t an option. Byrne needs to tell him to be in his office tomorrow morning at 0500 and find out why the team was so poorly prepared and which assistant coaches are going to be replaced. If the correct answers aren’t given, DeBoer put on notice that he’s coaching for his job next season and no contract extension is going to be offered at this time.
We lost two games in a row where our players slipped down for a quarter because they didn’t have the right shoes when our opponents did, and that is a huge red flag to have that problem two games in a row. No good coach would allow that to happen the second time. He was also made aware that the quiet sideline demeanor wasn’t working when he got embarrassed by FSU. He corrected it for a few games, but by the time Oklahoma beat us again it had again become a problem. A head coach shouldn’t have to be constantly reminded of habits and behaviors that led to losses, yet he obviously does. I doubt he’s been on a hot seat before, but he hopefully gets a double dose of what it feels like starting tomorrow. I didn’t catch the post game interview, but if it was the normal one he gives, Byrne should have marched him back to the podium to rub his nose in it after this debacle and make him take full responsibility, including the idiotic fourth down attempt that started the unraveling.

Yep, same with Coach Bryant. He preached the little things were important.

Here's what's befuddling. Alabama had better athletes and more talent at almost every position on the field but you would never know it watching the game. How does "want", "desire" and "execution" beat all that talent in such an overwhelming way? That is a huge red flag for the coaches and hopefully they recognize it. They just let a team dominate them like never before. I don't think there's been another game where Alabama had the talent mismatch so much in their favor yet the result so opposite. WOW...
So many plays our players just held their block and didn't try to get off their block to make a play on defense..if someone is holding you fight back! get physical! but we didn't seem to want to do that.

I'm not so sure we've whiffed in recruiting as much as we haven't coached the best we've had for a long time so we've had a bad track record in developing and playing the right guys and that's been over a couple of staffs.

We've had OL transfers go earn starting spots at schools playing way better than we are right now on the O.

I have NO clue what we were doing this year. I still maintain that Roberts was by far our best IOL, and that it wasn't even close, and he barely played. GVDM, was the #2 guy, and it seemed like he got shuffled all over the place and never had a consistent role. We seem married to Brailsford despite the fact he NEVER moves anyone out of the way, and often seems like he's running around lost looking for someone to block, or sliding to help 2 guys block 1 when the pressure is from the other side. The guy we lost when we brought him in is starting at Miami and anchored that team's IOL very well.

Well Roberts if you believe some of his family members that him and Grubb got into it. It’s been public on twitter.

Grubb is getting lot of hate but early in the year he was getting a lot of praise how much better he was then we had. Did he forget how to call plays or was he handcuffed with a quarterback that was clearly injured and didn’t have the ability to throw the ball down the field the last 2 months? The offense is designed to throw the ball down the field. Which is what we were doing to start the year.
By this logic, the offense cannot run the ball "by design".
No good team gets worse as the season progresses. Seattle saw the problem before we did

I hope most Bama fans realistically knew this team was not going to win a nationally championship this year. There were just too many holes in our team that never got fixed. First, teams cannot win championships without a sound ground game. We never had that, and it really got exposed today. As bad as things appear, I do believe we need to give Debore a chance to make the much needed changes. We certainly need to change some assistant coaches, and find a way to avoid the departure of our good players through the transfer portal. Whether we like it or not, the transfer portal will be a temptation for some.
But we thought the team would get off the bus and play some football.Today that didn't happen.

The biggest problem I saw with today’s game was “softness”, especially on defense. They were the more physical team. Softness is not about stars, but about an unwillingness to play with the aggression and intensity required. We could not stop them from running the ball and every time we made contact with the ball carrier, he either broke the tackle or fell forward for an extra 2 to 3 yards.

I want to know one thing....What the heck happened to Ty Simpson? He was a Heisman candidate based on his result during the first part of the season. His decision making was excellent, his arm was lively and accurate and was commanding the offense like a BOSS. For whatever reason that all went away or become very spotty at best. Another befuddling aspect of Alabama's season.
I think we'll find out he was playing hurt when the downturn started.

What I don't understand is why not go to your #2.

Someone said we didn't complete a pass over 25 yards in our last 6 games.
