Bama Game Thread: Official PostGame Thread - Bama vs. IU...

Fair response. I largely agree. The difference is I'd take five slightly underweight athletes over five overweight road-graters. The game is simply different today and while being able to push the ball mano-a-mano is still important, overall line movement is more important to modern offenses than the road-grading that was idealized when I played ball.

I share the same thought about the overweight road graders. I'm a bit cautious with the underweight guys though. It seems like that might work in the modern offenses out West, but in SEC and Big 10 level play, there are DL are quick enough to slant through the gaps left by pulling OL and make plays from the backside.

Were we outbid for all of the Indiana guys who demolished our team today?

Maybe having more money doesn’t mean everything.
It isn't . for sure. Just ask OSU, Texas/aTm.
However, it can make a difference on a couple of high value players. And THAT can make a difference.
And I have no idea if we offered any of those players because it appears Mr. Morgan, CKD, the AD and boosters lost my phone # so I wasn't consulted with......

A better option? Why? because he won one game over us? Because IU is in the playoffs?
I mean if we go by that criteria let's back up the Brinks truck for Dabo or Chizik.
They have actually won national championships.
Furthermore, who says Cignetti would have accepted if offered?
For some reason, there are people who just assume that just because we're Alabama that just EVERYBODY will drop their current gig and come rushing to coach Alabama ................ and especially to follow the GOAT.....yeah, ok.

I agree that we have issues. That's a no brainer. But if you fire DeBoer right now, after season 2, then you've become Auburn 2.0.
Hyperbole, man. Chill. Just making a point that other programs with far less resources and pedigree have made good hires that, right now, are having much more success and playing much more like “Alabama football” than we are. You really think Cignetti would have turned down coaching at Alabama? No way, even following Saban.

I’ve said in other posts that CKD should get time to fix things. But I just don’t have much confidence he will or that his brand of football will work long term in a physical league like the SEC. I may be wrong, hope I am, and will gladly eat crow if so. Only time will tell.

I was thinking about his 2023 Washington team, which was good, had a good offense, and really does fit the prototype of what at least others seem to think his offense should look like. I fear they're not looking closely enough though.

For instance up until the blowout to Michigan, the past ten games Washington played were all within 10 points. And you might think oh those were all great teams, no, not at all.

For instance against a 3-9 Arizona St. team they scraped by to win 15-7. I thought, hmm let me check the box score. Washington ran for 1 yard per rush. 13 rushes for 13 yards. Sound familiar? Penix threw a couple picks, and despite the Joe Moore award winners, first round picks, all of that they nearly got beat by 3-9 Arizona St. and also couldn't run the ball, at all.

I know it doesn't sound fair to cherry pick bad performances, but while I think DeBoer CAN fix the issue, it is structural and requires some serious work to do so. It's not an Alabama personnel issue, it follows him.
Its his teams, its him, its who CKD is as a coach. We basically can expect streaks of good play, mostly games played on the margins and a game or two per year where his team just craps the bed. So far in two years he's had two games each season where hes been blown out. We're basically describing a coach that depending on how things break, could just as likely go 8-4 or 10-2. But dont expect 12-0 or 11-1 due to inconsistencies in the coaching

Bingo. And it is maddening.

I went into this game thinking, if we could establish a little bit on the ground, get some pressure on Mendoza, and force a couple of turnovers, we had a chance to pull the upset.

Never came close to happening.

The most disappointing thing isn’t the loss. It is HOW we lost. It was an embarrassment.

From this point CKD is on the short leash in terms of my support..

All I did was ask you some simple questions......

I want to try to be fair to him, you know I've taken my share of shots.

He's alarmingly inexperienced. By that I mean his first FBS experience in any way, shape or form came in 2014 at Eastern Michigan as their OC. His first power conference experience of any way, shape or form came in 2019 and his first head coaching job at the FBS level came in 2020.

For instance contrast this to Nick Saban, he was an assistant at Syracuse in 1977, West Virginia in 1978, Ohio State in 1979. First head coaching job was Toledo in 1990, so by the time he arrived at LSU he was decades removed from his first power conference experience and 10 years removed from his first head coaching job.

Likewise, with Cignetti, he's a GA at Pitt in 1983, back in Pitt as an assistant in 1993, then at NC State before landing at Alabama in 2007. Granted he has slightly less FBS head coaching experience than DeBoer, but considering his FBS exposure dated all the way back to a ranked Piit team in 1983, he had exposure to that level of football decades ahead of DeBoer. Even Dan Lanning's first power conference exposure was years earlier than DeBoer, in 2011.

I complained when he was hired that he had virtually no experience with blue chip kids and I did fear it would influence recruiting, and while that isn't the case , I think there's got to be a bit of a learning curve there especially when you consider he's basically gone the entirety of his football career without crossing paths with 5 star players (until arriving at Alabama).

So, I say all that to say part of the problem is the solution. He's smart and he knows he's smart. He's developed bad habits because they worked well enough against lesser competition. But he doesn't know what he doesn't know, what Saban and Cignetti had years to experience, learn, and respond to, DeBoer is still in some ways just being exposed to. He'd still in the first decade of his power conference exposure, so I am holding out hope he can learn and adapt. If he changes his priorities he's smart enough to adapt.

I am not, however like those that thing the problem is he doesn't have his players. I've seen what that looks like, that's not the issue.

All this game did was re-enforce the fact we were not sniffing a national championship this year with this inconsistent squad. The offense was not anywhere close to being championship level. Defense had moments, but overall not good enough

Wait, you are telling me we cannot win a title after getting blown out?

Well, we “struck out in the portal and needed to temper our expectations.” If that was actually said to the REC or the 4H club by our GM, God help us. I watched two clinics put on by teams built through the portal.

People just do not understand that you cannot bring a coach that has never coached in the SEC before thinking they are going to do good it will not happen that whole coaching staff never been in the SEC before they need to fire deboer and the staff with him and make some phone calls to get lane kiffin

I’m tired of hearing “wait until he gets his players” from DeBoer apologists. We just got beat by a guy who turned IU around in months, not years. He didn’t need time to get his players, they went out and got them quickly. What’s DeBoer waiting for?

Many on TF seem convinced that we have a great coach who just needs time. I’m not convinced.

DeBoer has now lost 3 games by 21+ points in his first 2 years. Saban had 1 in 17 years. This is unacceptable, this is not Alabama football and this is not the right coach for the job.

Lose a game, fine, but compete. 3 times now DeBoer’s teams have not competed at all. Pathetic.

Tell me, after 17 years of Saban, why did we not try to hire from his coaching tree? It has worked for a number of teams, we didn’t think it could work at Bama?

IMO, he gets 1 more year. Start tomorrow, go buy the guys you need to win. Otherwise he can start packing his bags next December.
