Game Thread: **Official South Carolina - Auburn Game Thread**

Barn will not be undefeated when they play Bama; and anyone willing to bet on that, find me.
Someone posted their schedule; look who they play before they play Bama.
That's right, the longest running rivalry in the SEC. Don't be surprised if even Georgia beats them.
Chavis's D wil be hitting fig all night, and he won't come out of that beating with a win. They do have the hogs at home, and the only chance hogs have of winning is if it's a morning start. Nutt may pull it off at home.
How many teams has SC hung that many points on this year? and Barn has a great d? Please...

Auburn looks solid right now. They seem to get a lot of "gifts" from opposing teams, but to their credit they walk through the open door.

However, they are one injury away from half their offense going to the trainers table. That's the big difference in them and let's say, Bama, who doesn't depend on just one guy to get it all done.

They also will have to endure the other bumps and bruises as their season goes on so we'll see if last year's trend comes into play in the second half of the season.

This.

I'll be glad to start with the Georgia game.

You are crazy. Arkansas will kill Auburn.

No they won't. Unless Newton gets hurt, our game with them will decide who goes to Atlanta.

Cam Newton again showed he can make enough of the throws to be effective. He's a force of nature when he carries the ball. And what other team have you seen that plays in such a clearly faster gear in the second half? I believe that would be us.

So far, Auburn has had injury luck to go along with its scheduling luck. In Newton, they now have the early front-runner for SEC Player of the Year.

I would agree with you, eyeshade. It's early yet, but Auburn seems to be internalizing that ability to surge in the second half. I thought that last year, Jordan Jefferson appeared to be the fastest QB we saw during the SEC regular session, but he is Wylie Coyote compared to that roadrunner named Newton.

Really! Watching Newton play must make Meyer's heartburn even worse. If he could have kept him, he could have had four more years of the Tebow offense...

I can't believe what I am reading; you beat the barn the opposite of the way you beat the hogs, but you do it the same way; in fig's face, all day, hit him every opportunity and make him pass (instead of the other way with Mallet, who you would normally want to try and run...except once :conf2:)
If fig cannot run, the barn cannot win. The barn will not beat anyone if they have to pass all game. Look at how many yds they gave up to SC; only Garcia gave the game away, then his backup sealed the deal.
No way barn comes in to Ttown undefeated; I think there are a lot of their opponents' coaches smarter than me and they will figure it out. (?) I know Chavis will...

Earle, I was thinking the same thing. Newton is bigger than Tebow, he's faster than Tebow, and though he's a little bit behind him as a thrower, he shows well enough. Besides, he runs a much more complicated offense.

What impresses and scares me the most about the Barn is its long list of creative -- and conservative -- plays: little flips and leans and counters that create space and keep the defense on the defensive.

And when you have a quarterback who can literally drop to a knee to convert a third and 3 . . . Voila: perpetual 4-down territory.

Which brings us to the key question: Can they do this on the road against a quality opponent? See you at Thanksgiving.

That's not what I said...please read the post. I said "Don't be surprised...". Barn doesn't have a week off between now and then.
But, I said, they will not be unbeaten when they come to ttown.

Auburn got over 500 yards against an experienced, physical and very fast defense. A good defense couldn't create the scenario that you advocate. AU ran and passed at will. They might have zipped by SC earlier if not for their own two fumbles. Garcia's mistakes were huge but the first one was caused by one serious hit.
Do you really think that a team with as little heart as Georgia will make the effort to keep up with that offense? LSU has PP and little else. Kentucky? AU plays one tough game on the road - us. I hope we stomp em but this team is much better and scarier than a lot of us, including me, ever imagined.

They have an easier road to an undefeated season than we do and, like CrimsonEyeshade mentioned, I too believe that the Iron Bowl will determine who goes to Atlanta.

They only passed for 158, that's not "lighting it up"; then again, they didn't have to, because they were so successful running. And with all due respect, exactly what other offensive powerhouse had SC played before this game? Possible their defense was over-hyped? Sure is...I watched most of the Clemson game and it's the same Barn team.
And, uh, in regard to the first sentence in bold - we did...and we did it to Tebow. I absolutely do not understand your statement that a good defense could not stop a qb from running and force him to pass.

Eyeshade beat me to it but i'll try to expand on what he said and what i meant.

SC had a veteran defense that took it to us in much of last year's game in Tuscaloosa. We had defense picture-perfectly made to beat Florida - experienced strong defensive backs, a great defensive line and a once in a decade linebacker to bring the wood. Its a long time to November and we are long, long way from being the 09 defense. Neither Clemson or SC could stop them in the 4th quarter and I think both field good defensive teams.

If we get through the trip to Columbia undefeated then I like our chances of running the table. But nothing in AU's last two games indicates to me that they aren't a resurgent team and one that has more than an even chance to be undefeated when they come to Tuscaloosa.

Newton has been a force but several of you are giving the barn too much credit as a team. What has SC done anyway? They beat one of the worst Georgia teams in years and that's about it. Remember, the barn "shredded" a defense coached by that all time guru Ellis Johnson. They are one injury to Newton away from being Miss. St.

The same can be said of Arkansas as well.

I think South Carolina has a good defense. I remember one good hit on Newton. I remember a number of important pass plays including AU's final touchdown. The gamecocks could not stop the run well enough to force Newton to beat them because he and his teammates ran through and around them the entire game.

I hope you are right about SC's defense because a trip to Columbia to play a team with so little to lose scares me more than a little.

The same can be said of Arkansas as well.

Or, until yesterday, Alabama, too.

At this point of the season, what we know about the relative strength of SEC teams is just north of doodle.

All any of us can do is win the games we have to play. We've done it. So has Auburn. Somebody care to explain the exchange rate that makes their wins less valuable than ours?

Two quick observations.
1. Newton accounts for 60% of the Auburn Rushing Offense.
He needs to be pressured... (Hint)
2. USC(E) was able to pass on the Auburn Defense. The USC(E) QB. were not as good as we had been led to believe.
The USC(E) team has a fumble problem. Garcia ain't much better than he was a couple of years ago at holding onto the ball.

Garcia actually played very well for 3 quarters, then as you point out he inexplicably reverted back to his old ways of trying to make things happen with his feet. On the second fumble the play Spurrier had called was open for a 1st down, Garcia hesitated and then ran with it. Spurrier was furious. auburn sold out to stop the run (8 in the box much of the game). auburn secondary is not very good, a team like Arky may rip them.

Newton is better than I thought, but I think teams from here out will wake up and make him beat them with his arm (not sure what game film Ellis Johnson watched to prepare for him).

I think USC still has a legit shot at 8 wins (KY, Vandy, Tenn, Troy, and clemson).
