I don't believe it's the kid's situation that is funny. It's the quote that sounds like "please let this child who can't read come to college." It seems like we, as fans, are pushing schools to let these star athletes into school when some of them, whether at their fault or not, just shouldn't be there. I don't know this kid's whole story so I say that more as a general statement than directed toward him. IF he has dyslexia and was diagnosed prior to taking those ACT's, there are systems in place to help you take the test such as having a proctor read the ENTIRE TEST to you.

Once again, I'm not being a hard heart, but there's got to be some kind of academic standard to letting kids into school. For most kids that line is pretty well drawn. How far would a school be willing to bend to let a star athlete in and would it really benefit the school in the long run other than a couple of touchdowns?

The school system failed him. More importantly...

Shirley Powe said in the documents that as a single mother who worked to support her family she was not able to help her son with his homework... "I didn't know until he was almost finished (with high school) he wasn't getting the education he should have gotten," Shirley Powe said in court papers.

... his mother failed him. It's one thing to not have the time to help your child on a daily basis with his studies, although this is still a terrible excuse. It's quite another level of neglect to not know he can't read until he is almost finished with high school.

Aren't there minimum standards to be met to stay academically eligible to play in high school as well? Has noone thought about what the high school did to keep this young man on their team? Just the way our society is now, modeled after ancient Rome. Give me your criminals, sociopaths, and otherwise undesirable people not qualified to shake salt on fries at McDonald's, we'll give them a ball and an area to play in and charge a fortune for the mainstream populus to come take out the aggression of their everyday lives.

As a former special education teacher who just transferred to general education this year, it is interesting to me that he didn't receive special education services until his senior year, yet he was able to maintain a minimum gpa of 2.5 WHILE BEING A NON-READER! I have a set of twins in my English 12 class who are smart as can be, but they cannot read. With special education accommodations, they maintain all A's--in general ed. classes, but if they were in those same classes with no accommodations, there is no way they could keep a solid C average. If Powe's mom didn't know he couldn't read, not only did she fail him, but the school system did as well, because somebody should've been in contact with her well before his senior year.

This is interesting to me. My pastor is dyslexic and couldn't read upon graduation from HS. He was recruited (70s) by UA, but couldn't gain entrance, whereupon Coach Bryant called Charley Pell at Jax and that's where he went and played tackle until he tore up both knees (he's had four knee replacements). In undergrad school, it was found out that he couldn't read. He was lucky enough (and had enough faith) to have the right people (including a supportive wife) to come to his aid. Reading is still very laborious for him, but he graduated from Bama and then graduated Cum Laude from Candler School of Theology at Emory University. It's not always true that dyslexic=dumb...
