On the other hand, the defender cannot impede the route of the receiver. The defender would have to play the ball (i.e. not have his back to the ball) in this case.

Oh good grief! He was not impeding at all. The receiver cannot turn and run into the defender nor can he make a sudden stop and create contact. Now, let's drop this one. There was no flag and it was a good no-call...
