I recall early on Saban saying Ty was struggling to keep his emotions in check. When things would go wrong he would press and not do what he was supposed to do. It sounded like a maturity thing to me. But he was a kid, so that's not really unexpected. If he's grown into the job then I believe his talent was never in question.

Mac Jones had the same problem, but he turned out okay. I'm hoping for the same in this situation. Ty will need a couple of games to get properly attuned to game speed with his timing routes and if that light comes on the way it did for Mac, watch out!

Mac had a great year; but having a WR room of Smitty, Waddle, Metchie, Bolden and an excellent offensive line really helped.

I think Ty will be more than fine. He has been with Bama longer than any QB aside from AJ. he knows the culture and layout of the land as well any player on the team besides Keenan. He has had plenty of mop up duties in the last 3 years more so than any back up QB in recent memory. this is his show now and he will thrive with Grubb back in DeBoer's 2nd year.

Don't forget Mac Jones. He was also in his 4th year (like TS), and played a good bit more in his first three years than TS did.

My biggest fear right now for Alabama is that we are immensely successful offensively this year and have Grubb for all of one year.
Has Grubb showed any interest in being a HC? I kind of get the feeling that he's a career OC. If that's the case, and if he has success at Bama, with his buddy DeBoer, why would he leave? He took a shot at the NFL last year and that didn't work out so well.

agree with everything you posted, but we Bama fans are a cautious bunch with the" once bitten, twice shy "mentality. :ROFLMAO:

I think he's been a career OC under DeBoer because he just hasn't gotten the notoriety yet, though it did come in some form when he got the Seattle OC job. If we go from having an underachieving offense from last year to an elite offense this year under Grubb, then I think he will get a ton of attention as a potential HC, but I'm probably getting ahead of myself.

Could see a scenario where the offense cooks and some NFL owner wants to see the whole package at the next level (ie, Deboer brings Grubb, Sheridan, Shephard with him)

I see some here still have reservations about Ty. "We don't need a Heisman QB, we just need a good game manager..." Yes, someone who can make smart decisions and move the chains will be great. But I believe Ty can offer much more. I believe Ty will be a Heisman caliber quarterback. But I get it. Some of you aren't convinced enough to say it. You want to see proof on the field. Reminds me of when Mac Jones was called on to start the 2020 season. Many here were not convinced. Some still calling for Young to be starter. I had predicted in 2019 that Mac would be the top quarterback in the SEC. Not Kellen Mond. And I'm saying now, Ty Simpson will rank right up there with Manning, Nussmeier, and Klubnik. You'll see soon enough. Ty will be elite!
Well, I'm not in a prediction contest so it doesn't matter to me one way or the other who "calls it" or not. If Ty turns out to be a Heisman contender/winner, then great, we all benefit. But for someone who hasn't started one game and has barely any real game experience, I want to see him play on the field in a real game before I start attaching labels to his play. I would be tickled pink if he turned out to be a superstar, but right now, I'm just wanting "Greg McElroy"/"AJ McCarron" type of decision making and execution. Anything beyond that is gravy for me.

Agree completely. Also, Mac was a much more proven commodity than Ty Simpson is. Mac played well against Auburn and Michigan at the end of the 2019 season. Ty's only meaningful playing time is a half against USF. Ty might be great, and I hope so, but I want to see it. I feel the same way about Arch Manning.

It's an interesting question. I could argue either way on it.

P5 head coach contracts are well over $10M for the life of the contract. Even if it doesn't work out, you're set for life. If it does work out, so are your kids.

But if you look at the salaries of top-tier OCs in today's game and take into account that they don't have the headaches of pay-for-play or the portal (at least, not to the extent that HCs do), it's possible to justify the money being too expensive.

In the past, there aren't many coaches who settled for being a career coordinator never having given it a shot as a HC. Mickey Andrews is one. Ken Donahue is another. But they were before the huge money of today. Plus, their personalities didn't lend themselves to being the public face of a program and I think they recognized that.

Chip Kelley, Gus Malzahn, and several others already had generational money from HC gigs before deciding that being a HC wasn't worth the headaches. Easy to say if you have $50M+. Monte Kiffin didn't work out at NC State. Homer Smith was fired from Army and Pacific before deciding to become the best OC in the game. Mission accomplished.

Today, the best OCs make well into 7 figures. Grubb makes a $1M base but has a lot of bonus opportunities. Plus, Byrne has said that the Seahawks are paying some sort of buyout, though he hasn't quantified that. Would the lure of HC money lead Grubb to leave? I don't know. But if I were betting, I'd say yes.

My fear is that Grubb is the real brains behind the offense and the driving force behind CKD's impressive record. The offense I saw last season without Grubb was atrocious and I'll chalk that up to the type of QB we had. But I do wonder if Grubb ever decided to move on (for good) could DeBoer still put a potent offense on the field?

Based on what Grubb said about QB skillset required for this offense - to paraphrase; this offense works when the QB is a passer and not so much when the QB is a runner, I tend to think last season (and frankly the one before) was a horrible case of skills mismatch to positional needs (square peg, round hole).

One reason I was hoping big time Ty would start or at least get sufficient minutes in the bowl game.

Not to rehash the 2023 season again, but Tommy Rees was definitely handcuffed with Milroe's limitations. We as fans saw first hand the frustration on his face multiple times during the season. Frankly, Rees got more out of him than most probably would have.
Rees is currently the OC for the Browns so he wasn't really the issue.

People have reservations about Ty because people noted his biggest issue was trying to do too much. He tried to be a better Milroe than Milroe. All Ty has to do is manage the huddle and navigate the offense. If he tries to be more than the offense needs we will get to see Russell a lot sooner than we want.

Get the ball to these playmakers, the yards, stats, and points will come.
