Has Grubb showed any interest in being a HC? I kind of get the feeling that he's a career OC. If that's the case, and if he has success at Bama, with his buddy DeBoer, why would he leave? He took a shot at the NFL last year and that didn't work out so well.
It's an interesting question. I could argue either way on it.
P5 head coach contracts are well over $10M for the life of the contract. Even if it doesn't work out, you're set for life. If it does work out, so are your kids.
But if you look at the salaries of top-tier OCs in today's game and take into account that they don't have the headaches of pay-for-play or the portal (at least, not to the extent that HCs do), it's possible to justify the money being too expensive.
In the past, there aren't many coaches who settled for being a career coordinator never having given it a shot as a HC. Mickey Andrews is one. Ken Donahue is another. But they were before the huge money of today. Plus, their personalities didn't lend themselves to being the public face of a program and I think they recognized that.
Chip Kelley, Gus Malzahn, and several others already had generational money from HC gigs before deciding that being a HC wasn't worth the headaches. Easy to say if you have $50M+. Monte Kiffin didn't work out at NC State. Homer Smith was fired from Army and Pacific before deciding to become the best OC in the game. Mission accomplished.
Today, the best OCs make well into 7 figures. Grubb makes a $1M base but has a lot of bonus opportunities. Plus, Byrne has said that the Seahawks are paying some sort of buyout, though he hasn't quantified that. Would the lure of HC money lead Grubb to leave? I don't know. But if I were betting, I'd say yes.
