Video: Pate's reaction to the Rose Bowl

Got it, won't have to worry about me posting his videos again. This is ridiculous.
Cruloc, Mrs. Tidewater shared a story with me about Ben Franklin. Some people in Phillie wanted to erect a Maypole in the spring, saying it was a long-honored tradition. Others said a Maypole was a heathen fertility ritual and the Maypole was a phallic symbol.
They brought to problem to Franklin, asking what they should do.
Franklin responded, "those that want to have a maypole shall have a maypole. Those who don't want to have a maypole, shall not have a maypole."

The same thing applies to paint videos. Those who want to watch will watch. Those that don't will not. Keep posting links if you think he's seeing something interesting. Those who find them annoying, or uninteresting will skip it.

I think Pate's broader point is valid.
There are going to be university presidents and ADs around the country saying to themselves, "Indiana and Coach Cig turned that program around in two years. He have got to find the next Coach Cig to turn our program around."
The upshot will be a wave of impatient firings and hirings, program instability and growing fan base frustration.
The problem is guys like Coach Cig do not grow on trees. He is a rare bird, very rare.

He probably should have been a HC at a major P4 program 8-10 years ago.

He really had to work his way up from Div II to FCS to the G5 to the P4.

I imagine it’s been his interviews that’s held him back until now.

AD: Why don’t you tell me a little about yourself.

Cig: Google Me

And a rare situation.

There’s no reason to believe Cig could walk into an established program and make it significantly better. He has caught lightning in a bottle landing at Indiana at the perfect time wrt the portal and NIL.

The window will close soon at IU - as soon as the players start demanding the cash “they’re worth” like they do everywhere else Cig will no longer look like the man who cracked the code Saban couldn’t…

OR..this is the new model in the era of NIL/unlimited transfers.....there are over 2000 players in the portal in just 12 hours..many of those I suspect have proved themselves at smaller programs and are looking to showcase their talent in a P4 to get visibility to the NFL...and NIL opportunities....out of 2000 ( that is sure to grow) there has to be 10-15 impact ( older) players minimum, likely a lot more...so ala Cignetti, coaches can comb through the portal and start to"buy" success....and I am sure AD's will approve since Cignetti has proved the formula can work. God rest CFB's soul.

Yep. Time will tell.

This is more about the state of college football than this video, but I just don’t know what to think about this new format when Bama, UGA, and OSU are already out. I don’t want March Madness in college football. I want the best teams to win.

Jimmies and Joes still matter, so building a championship-level team of largely 3* players isn't going to be the norm.

The timing has been a huge factor, and I'm guessing as soon as next season Indiana won't look the same.

Otherwise, as I posted earlier, Cig will be proving himself better than Saban wrt solving the Rubik's Cube of modern CFB, and with almost no HC experience, I have a ton of doubt that's the case...

Absolutely!! Bama, Georgia, Ohio st and the likes are full of blue-chip players on their roster and the main reason they win 10-11 games every season. Portals, transfers can help with some immediate needs, but it's not how you sustain success. Kiffin will inherit a talented team at LSU and the #11 incoming class. you don't think he's not giddied with talent that was recruited by the previous coaching staff? unlike Ole Miss, where he had to go through the portals and get transfers that could fix his lack of depth and talent in order to compete. at LSU, he will have players that went through the evaluation/ rankings, so the heavy lifting isn't so bad. lastly, Kiffin is known not to care for HS recruiting. at LSU that won't be a problem for him.

I’m really impressed with what Cignetti has done but even still I myself wouldn’t mean it to come across as that I think he smarter or better than CNS.

I think if CNS had been 10-15 years younger when the NIL and Portal came to be and didn’t already have 7 NCs he would have had the energy and fire to navigate this mess.

I don’t really blame a 72 year old CNS washing his hands of it after guys kept asking him about money instead of goals.

Cignetti lucked into ‘cracking the code’ maybe because what other choice did he have at Indiana but to build a team of Hardworking 3 stars with a few 4 stars who care more about winning than money?

Even still… it’s impressive he scouted the exact right players at every spot and plugged them in and coached them up to work perfectly in tandem like a well oiled machine and with a blue collar toughness.

Very similar to CNS’s 2007-09 rebuild where we were we had a lot of 3 star contributors.

I do agree that it might not be sustainable exactly as it is.

Cignetti will have to gradually increase talent levels to compete at such a high level year in and year out…. and he has to convince them to come to Indiana.

Just as a HC though he looks like the real deal and can put together a tough team.

It will but there are far more 3* than 4/5* and then you disperse those 4/5* across a bunch of teams you lessen their impact as a core group. And you may end up over spending to retain the 4/5* to the detrimental of how much you can invest in your 3* platoon.

There is a lot of analytics to consider in these decisions and I doubt the old norms apply as much anymore.

I know we have CM managing the roster but it may also help to have Phil Savage provide insight as a former NFL GM on roster economics.
