Re: Petrino to Arky? (Espn Confirmed)

I think Blank needs to go the Alabama route and hire a proven winner and not hire another guy that has to learn as he goes. Unfortunately that is a little harder to do in the NFL since the tampering rules are pretty strict.
Like Saban??? I kid, i kid...

Re: Petrino to Arky? (Espn Confirmed)

Word out up here is the Coach and his wife have some problems and she is taking their two teenage kids and moving back to Louisville. They have a 19 year old at Georgetown college out side of Lexington.

All these fans bashed CNS for leaving the Fins, but now they are saying ..."its a good move by CBP. He is a college coach".

I know what their problems are, but I'd rather be quite, I seeing stuff on the boards here, and I know some folks who know what is going on.
are the problems in anyway similer to nutts baggage? its is sounding like arky is swaping one problem for another.

LOL. The names being thrown out now are Bill Cowher, Marty Shottenheimer, Ray Rhodes and Mike Martz. Some want Jim Foxx if he is forced out at Carolina and some are mentioning Mike Singletary.

I wouldn't mind Gruden if he leaves Tampa. He and Atlanta's GM work well together.

is a. blank in over his head owning a pro football team? he reminds me of some one who comes into money and buys an expensive race car but he dosent know how to drive it. its like the king has no clothes on. imo vick is through in the nfl his style works on the play ground but not in the nfl. no one will touch him.
I hope everything works out for Blank as an NFL owner. He has put his trust and money into two people with serious character issues.

I keep hearing that Petrino left behind a bunch of issues at Louisville that got swept under the rug while he was there. I'm not sure of the specifics, but if it is correct, it may not be good for the long term success of the Arkansas program. I guess only time will tell...

Re: Petrino to Arky? (Espn Confirmed)

It's also important to note that Petrino lied to Blank yesterday. He told Blank that he was not going anywhere. Then today he calls Blank on his cell phone to tell him he is resigning.
...also note that Petrino told everybody in Louisville how happy he was to be spending the rest of his career in Louisville, just a couple of days before arranging a meeting with LSU about their job (after CNS left). And don't forget JetGate, talking to the Aubies while they still had a coach under contract. He knew his time was short in Louisville, so he cut corners, especially in recruiting. This guy is shifty, to say the least.

He's certainly a good coach and an offensive innovator, but only time will tell is he has the honesty, integrity, and staying power it will take to build a solid, long-term program at Arkansas.

Re: Petrino to Arky? (Espn Confirmed)

I agree. Ironically, Vick's leaving the team was a dream come true for Petrino. I always thought that many had an unhealthy hate for Vick, but realistically he was just too inconsistent to take the team very far.

His contract was tying up way too much money and the Falcons couldn't really cut him because of the salary cap hit. Petrino was going to have tons of salary cap money freed up over the next few years and a very high draft pick next year.

As a Falcon fan, this is actually good for the team as Petrino didn't have it in him to ever be a good NFL coach. At least now we don't have to fire him and buyout his contract - we actually get a decent buyout to go after a real NFL coach.

I think you will see the veteren players rip him pretty good as they told the press that he was terrible even when he was their coach.

your absolutely right, petrino lost this team after 0-3, the veterans never respected him. any nfl coach thats a strict disciplinarian will never make it today, tom Coughlin has stuck, but, its been a rocky road!
as far as the salary cap, people I know thought the falcons went after Vicks signing bonus as punishment for not fulfilling his contract, thats a small part of it, it was mainly to get the salary cap hit back!, even though the falcons will never see the 22 mil, it doesn't count against the cap any longer!

Re: Petrino to Arky? (Espn Confirmed)

Bobby Petrino has FOUR years as a college head coach. FOUR!
Two years playing in a sorry Conference USA, and two in the Big East with the benefit of a great quarterback. He is the next Dennis Franchione. Big hit in little leagues, but a flop in big boy town. Somehow, he's conisdered a genius and the best thing since beer and chicken wings.

Jeff Shultz of the AJC said Bobby Petrino makes Nick Saban look like a martyr because he at least stayed two full seasons.

not to mention he signed a 10-year extension at Louisville then bolted to Atlanta within a week.

The $22 million DOES count against the cap ... unless they can actually COLLECT the money. That is the problem. Vick, by all accounts, is dried up.

Re: Petrino to Arky? (Espn Confirmed)

Arkansas has called a press conference tonight for 10:30pm. 10:30pm? A very strange time to hold a press conference, I would think. Maybe they want to trot him out before he has a chance to reconsider, I don't know.

Re: Petrino to Arky? (Espn Confirmed)

While Petrino is a "hot name" and will (at least initially) do well recruiting, his being at Arkansas doesn't concern me as much as many of you say it does.

Here's why:

1. Arkansas loses a lot depth next season (especially if the expected players turn pro). He will face a rebuilding system to go along with a complete change of offensive philosophy...two things he didn't have to worry about at Louisville.

2. Petrino played fast and loose when it came to recruiting at Louisville, promising starting spots and playing time. That can help for a short while, but almost always creates big problems in the long run (ask Coach DuBose).

3. Petrino took many chances on players with questionable character at Louisville. That won't work for long in the SEC.

4. His teams at Louisville won a lot of 55-51 type high-scoring games. He'll either have to put more focus on defense or will wind being the next Mike Leach, whipping up on also-rans while usually losing to the good teams.

5. Steve Kragthorpe gets a lot of blame for Louisville's down season, but many of the problems are of Petrino's making: reduced depth on the roster, bad attitude players, players promised playing time they didn't get, etc.

I'm not saying Petrino won't build a different kind of team at Arkansas, but doing so will require a different approach than the one he used at Louisville.

This says it all!

This also says a lot leading to this!

D'Angelo Hall and Roddie White are punks and they show what is wrong with the Falcons. Roddie running around with his "Free Mike Vick" shirt on during last nights game and D'Angelo calling his coach out every chance he got. Until these "Me" type players are gone I will not support them anymore. The Falcons just need to clean house and get unselfish players instead.

Most of his best years he had a QB who was very Good/Nice following him type QB. Unable to control a group of NFL type players. Not even finishing a A season in which his top player/QB was unable to play Just wait he will get his trouble makers in the SEC by fast recruiting and all will go down hill. He is still a good hire, and does not make things easy for us in the West but just wait. Plus Saban made NFL players cry not scream in his face!

During the Louisville/Rutgers game one of the commentators brought this up. They said that Rick Pitino was speaking at an event and someone there brought up the bad job Coach Kragthorpe had done this year and said Pitino went off, saying that people didn't know the mess that Kragthorpe had to try and clean up this season.

Re: Petrino to Arky? (Espn Confirmed)

Not true exactly, they either have to collect the money, OR he can file bankruptcy, then that money is as good as back.
Huh! Didn't know about the bankruptcy part, but makes sense.
But enough of Ookie. Shall we get back to the coach who quit his team mid-season after telling his owner and (at least some) media he was staying?? :biggrin2:

Not really. Arthur Blank can hardly be considered a "fool", especially in financial matters. He and Marcus stared Home Depot from scratch and became billionaires. Very few people can say that.

Also, he is retired from Home Depot now and has been for some time. He has nothing to do with it's current management.

He has not been a terrible owner. Coaches and players are very unpredictable so he can hardly be blamed for that. Just look at our luck with Dubose, Franchoine and Price.

Unfortunately, the Falcons have never been a great franchise but they have experienced a decent amount of success under Blank's ownership. The Falcons are worth far more now than they were when he bought them.
