Play calling... Not what you think.

We all know the obvious play calls that are in question, but I have a more in depth question...

I think we have a lot of "drive killing" plays... let me explain.

Sometimes there can be plays that are iffy, but not killers... I feel that we have a lot of drive killers... For instance, we are driving the crap out of the ball in the wildcat, pounding them, we get a first down, then the next play, Gmac is in and we try a low percentage pass and we are 2nd and 10, then run up the middle, now its 3rd and long... Drive killers versus, we ran left instead of right, etc...

We all know what this thread's really about. I think... we shouldn't overthink giving the QB confidence.

Run the ball into the endzone.

Agreed-

2nd and 2, we should hammer it in and its 13-3 and pressure is on them and we probably pick 6 crompton knowing they are passing and its a blowout, that's how tough that was... but my thought was in general, i've seen it several times this year..

we throw on 1st, incomplete, 2nd and 10, run, get 2, now we are behind the 8 ball...

Rest will help.

I hate to criticize play calls, ever. The coaches know more than me in all cases. But you run the ball on third and inches from the 4. You just do. Frankly, from beginning to end, I thought this was the worst called game in the Saban era. The Tennessee game plan was much better than ours. I don't know what the problem was or what we were dealing with, but I can't think of any situation in which that play call on 3rd and inches was the correct one. If you had told me that we were going to run the fade and that it would result in a touchdown, I would have said that's great, it's still a bad call.

Hopefully, they will notice these tendencies and correct them in the off week. Greg looked better than last week, but the whole offense just looks off kilter--QB, OL, WR. The only constant is Mark.

I dont give a crap if they drive the ball down in a wheel barrel! We won and thats the only stat I need. In college football, every game is a new season!

So some of you are actually saying that Kiffin outcoached Saban? You guys are unbelievable. Didn't Bama win? Aren't we 8-0? Didn't UT just come off a bye week? Some of you people amaze me at how quick you are to point fingers.

...and to paraphrase Jason Taylor (?), you don't have to be the best team in the country, just the best team in the stadium that day. Best is defined by who has the most points at the end of the game.

Tide staff was badly outcoached today. We need to rest, regroup, and rethink a lot of what we're doing during this off week.

A rare fumble not superior Tennessee coaching kept the score close. Florida is experiencing the same red zone woes Alabama is. They've scored touchdowns on just two of their last 15 trips inside the red zone. Alabama and Florida are ranked #1 & 2 Tennessee isn't and both Alabama and Florida found a way to win not a way to lose.

Thank you.

Someone had to speak rationally.

Surprisingly, most Bama fans realize we won the game and are 8 and 0. Doesn't mean the play calling was good or that we will be 9 and 0 w/the same play calling.

I agree. I don't think anyone is saying that the coaches/players/refs all stink or that the world is coming to an end. However, we have some obvious issues on the offensive side of the ball. Our defense is completely worn out. They couldn't get off the field against a very, very average UT offense in the second half. The week off could not have come at a better time for us.

Interesting notes- Great job again Tiffin. I thought our d-line would manhandle their OL, but that didn't happen. Crompton made a few very good throws. The throw and catch from Crompton to the tight-end to set-up their last FG attempt was unbelievable. How about Dareus covering the TE and almost making that play twenty yards down field. His athleticism is amazing for a guy his size. Ingram is still taking care of business when we call his number. It is hard to get upset with one fumble lost in 330 attempts. We were outplayed by a team with fresh legs and outcoached by a team with inferior talent, but we won the game. As someone else stated, that is the bottom line. Roll Tide!

Edit, I almost forgot- welcome back Julio Jones. That is all.

The Saban/Fisher combo at LSU had this tendancy to throw when they needed to run.
Saban has ways to make the bad play calling equal out,
I doubt Fisher will ever be back at the top.

2nd &2 at the 5, first down possible at tne 3,
#22 is yo hoss, not #8!
#22 has one lost fumble in all his carries,
#8 has a multitude of big drops!
#22 has carried the load,
why put in on a struggling #12?
you even have the "gimmick" of #62 at fullback.

Playcalling stopped Bama as much as the utk D did!
utk never constistantly stopped the "bobcat" combo of #22 & #3,
we just took it away from ourselves.

I laughed at Spurrier in the Carolina game for trying the fade/jumpball over and over when it just wasn't working.
against utk, Bama's playcalling was just as stupid.

Totally agree. Seems as though our offensive gameplan is a little disjointed at the moment. Lately almost every time we get to moving the ball and CJM throws in one play that really sets us back. Also, it does not seem to me that we are running alot of quick slant-type routes that will help GMAC's confidence and let Julio and the other WRs show their athleticism. The off week is coming at the perfect time for us and I suspect that we will see a rejuvinated Tide take the field for the next game.

I agree with this, keep riding the horse that got you here #22! I was at the game, he didn't look tired to me. We won, Roll Tide-now lets clean some things up before LSU come to town.

For three weeks now we have relied desperately on the Ingram formation, sans QB, to get us into the Red Zone, only to abandon the running game and go three and out with a QB at the helm. Somebody with a headset is choosing morale points (McElroy with cob-webs & Julio with butterfingers) over REAL points and it almost cost us the game, last night.

I was so mad I boo'd the UT band at half-time.

You really believe that Saban on McElwain pick plays that they think have a less likely chance of working so they can make GMac feel better about themselves?

I wish I could put you and Saban in a room and watch his face after you suggest this to him.

All i know is when we passed twice down on the goal line right before half i lost it. I had to go outside and scream so my grandkids wouldnt hear me. I told my parents at the time that that sequence could easily cost us the game and it almost did. U have to ram it in there. UT defense was gassed and ready to be had and we let them off the hook. A td there and i think this game would have been alot different ending.

Having said that though the finish made it was for the ages for Bama. Wont soon forget this one. Thanks Cody. You the MAN!
