Post season thread...

This pulls slightly off topic, but I have expressed my (I hate to say dislike) antipathy for CBB before, and must start to wonder when exactly we'll see a long term replacement hired. If he isn't willing to make the big decisions, then we need someone in place who is. The University is in a fairly precarious position atm with no President and a lame-duck AD, and yet something has to give. You can't continue to sweep things under the rug, can you?

Just trying to imagine the atmosphere surrounding Bama basketball next season with Grant still in charge. And that looks like what will happen here. I feel we are in unchartered waters -it appears that the PTB's really do not care about basketball success as long as the money continues to flow in ( because of football and Tide Pride) and the program is not in any type of trouble with the NCAA. And that is just sad- we the fans completely lose out and our voices go completely unheard.

Hiring a basketball coach is simply not what Bill Battle signed up for here. Nevermind that virtually every other team in the SEC would have let Grant go after the last 2 seasons.

Everything the administration does says they do not care about the students or the long time fans. ( especially the student seating arrangement). They allow Grant to not promote himself or the program. I feel they would almost prefer to let him coach next season with the same results than pay him his $ 4 million severance for not getting the job done. Maybe I am wrong.

Let's be very clear- I think things will get even worse next year- Auburn and Pearl will cheat their selves into relevance and will begin beating Alabama pretty soon. LSU and Texas A& M are recruiting lights out and will distance themselves further. I can honestly not point to anything ( recruiting, marketing, coaching) that says better days are ahead- and I have never really felt that way in the 40 years of supporting and watching Tide basketball.

This program is on life support. Maybe Grant would be happier somewhere else- I do not know. I am also hearing some rumors about possible transfers- again. Most notably Hale and Tarrant.

Not much left to say.

I agree. That was just a bad move to move the students out of section S. That's now faculty/staff. At least it's not Tide Pride; they could move students back.

I'm a Tide Pride season ticket holder, but I don't just have the tickets to get Tide Totals points. I actually use the tickets. I'm debating whether I should re-up for next year if he is retained. It would probably be easy to get them again in the future. But, I would hate to lose the seats that I have as they are really good.

I'm afraid that we will be facing the same situation in baseball this year. I think a coaching change should be made there too. Why do we have an interim AD?

This is very probably true. The evidence has mounted that CBB just doesn't want to be the one, as interim AD, to pull the trigger and make a very important hire. Unfortunately, having no Prez and no permanent AD certainly would reduce the chances of making a decent hire right now...

You are exactly right. The university will not have a new president in place until at best around the end of the year. The decision on who the new president will be is due to be made sometime in August which means unless they are already at the university, it will be at best several months before he/she begins work. CBB, I suspect has agreed to stay until they name his permanent replacement. The new president will also probably want to have a voice in who will be the next AD. That leaves us (the fans) in the lurch with respects the basketball. The administration is simply writing off next year because of the void in leadership. Battle should not have taken the job on any basis if he is unwilling to make tough, but necessary decisions.

I'm almost at the point of believing that attendance at games, or lack thereof, makes little difference. With the millions rolling in from the SEC Network, it seems it makes CBB decision to remain status quo and drop the decision in someone else's lap at a later date easier. While the school wants the additional revenue from attendance and NCAA tournament participation rolling into the coffers, the Network could be making it easier not push forward.

Heck, it's almost like saying "Here's the product. Come watch it (or not)."

Hopefully, someone with some pride will just say enough.

I've wondered the same. We hear folks in the athletic department want Grant, but what about the BOT? What about Dr. Witt? Do they want him gone or to retain him? If they want him gone, would be nice for them to send a note to CBB to make it happen.

Another thought - Grant has what two years left on his contract? Would Bama seriously give him an extension? If not, he finishes next season as the truest definition of a lame duck coach. That would be just one more bullet to Alabama basketball recruiting.

I posted earlier that I was streaming the Boomo Bugg show in Florence earlier in the week. Brett Beaird was reporting that there were some on the BOT that did want to make a change.

I think he has 4 years left, that the buyout is $1 mil for the remainder of the deal.

Wanted to quote something Hoot30 posted in the "end of the season" thread....

Finebaum started his show by stating that he talked to several Alabama people in Nashville yesterday. They all said that they were keeping Grant. He said one person asked him why would we get rid of him.

That thought process might explain the below comments someone on another Bama site posted...

Battle and administration are in "panic mode" because of negative backlash from fans, boosters and donors. That is from my source.I don't think they expected this much negativity which is also surprising at least to me.No word on a change from sticking with Grant, but if you have thought about writing a letter,go ahead and write it.

Welp my prediction has come true.I knew when we didn't hire Pearl when we had the chance this would be the outcome.I pleaded and pleaded but nobody would listen to me.When it comes to basketball the universities work ethic is as slow as molasses. They just don't care and I don't care. And none of you should either.

Why would we want Bruce Pearl? Why would you think he would be a good fit for this program.

I'm seeing lot of negative comments everywhere, not just on this thread, but others... I get what everyone is saying, but It's getting silly when everyone is complaining bout Administration at UA, Bill Battle and such... I'm not exactly happy with Grant's job performance this year, but right now, All I care about is the team to finish on strong note in NIT Tournament if selected. If Grant is coming back, and all signs points to him doing so, I would love to see if he will hire another assistant that can improve the offense, and not always rely on outside shots. I would love to see more PF and C getting involved in Paint, whether it's passing or setting up high screens, pick n roll plays... I really think we are spoiled by our football success... and not realize basketball is different from football. Some of you might jump on me, and try to make points with stats and probably try to make me look stupid, but I don't care... I'm voicing my opinion and i'm sticking to it... but anyway, that is all. Have a great evening.

He hired that assistant in Reggie Witherspoon last season. We saw a major difference in the first few weeks of the season. Then, the team went back to what we've seen for years.

He's an NCAA train wreck waiting too happen. There's a reason he spent ten years in DII and his only two coaching jobs after Milwaukee were UT and Auburn.
Even as disappointing as this season was, Pearl was never the answer. CAG > Pearl

This is the second time that Auburn has beaten LSU this year. It's not that big of a deal in a "mediocre" at best conference. Secondly, if Pearl were the only alternative to Grant, I'd give Grant an extension.

Has anyone seen what Auburn has done in the SEC tournament?

Bottom line IMO is this: Battle stated this time last year when people were wanting Grant gone, that he had "confidence in Grant but wanted to see improvement". Technically, he will be able to fall back on this loose definition of "improvement" by saying the win/loss record was better. I that will be the "out" for keeping Grant another year.

Sad that we can set the bar this low and say it is acceptable as "improvement".
