The first of four Goode brothers to play for the Crimson Tide between 1983 and 1991, Kerry — who announced Tuesday he has been diagnosed with ALS at age 50 — might have been the most talented. His performance against Boston College in the 1984 season-opener is both among the most incredible — and bittersweet — in Crimson Tide annals.

Goode, then a 19-year-old sophomore, totaled 297 all-purpose yards with three touchdowns, setting an SEC record with 197 kickoff return yards, along with 68 yards rushing and 32 receiving. And he did it all despite playing a little more than two quarters of the Crimson Tide's 38-31 loss to the Doug Flutie-led Eagles.

I really hate to hear this. I never watched him play because he was just before my time, but I've seen plenty of highlights and replays. Regardless he and his family are in my prayers.

His game against Boston College was one of the best I have seen. He was a good one for sure and seems to be a good person too. My prayers go out for him and the Goode family. They have dealt with a lot over the past few years with this and the loss of Clyde.

That was an amazing video. Thank you very much for sharing it with us. I could tell he was very touched by the call he got from Coach Saban.

I'll never forget watching Kerry open the 1984 season running wild on Boston College (including a 99 yd kickoff return for TD), only to have my heart broken by a Doug Flutie come back and Kerry being lost for the season after blowing out his knee. Hearing about Kerry's battle with ALS breaks my heart even more.

Please God, watch over Kerry and Kevin Turner.

As a side note....I don't know Coach Saban personally, but I have the feeling that he makes these kind of thoughtful calls all the time. He may not get public attention for most of them, though, because I'm sure he doesn't do it for the notoriety. Through these acts, he shows that he truly cares about people...not just the next great football star. So glad he is coaching the Alabama team.
