I don't think Tua really panicked on that throw. He either thought he could fit it in over the LB or missed the LB dropping into coverage. Both of those are pretty correctable.

I just watched the Tennessee game few minutes ago. He did panicked on that throw. Watch the tape again, and how he made the reads...
Going off memory and at work so I can't look up the video but I'll watch it later. From what I remember he was trying to hit a guy in the back of the end zone and had to adjust his throwing motion mid throw because he was about to get hit or maybe was getting hit.
Similar to when Jalen panicked and threw it up for grabs to Ridley in the api game. It just wasn't intercepted.
Again, not stats but how the offense looked in sync. Stats can be misleading and don't often tell the whole story. Jalen struggled in this game with bad throws, but made up his yards with some good throws in the end. IIRC, he had a big 3rd quarter drive that padded the stats.
Our 21-0 lead at the half was aided by some terrible mistakes UT made to keep 2 of our first quarter drives going.
So Tua had one INT? Yep, I don't think he saw the LB that basically sat down in the middle of the field. That happens occasionally and as I've said, I'd rather see an INT occasionally than the constant tuck and run or throw it out of bounds.
I was actually glad to see Jalen make a couple of out of character throws as badly as we were playing. The one to Juedy could have easily been intercepted too, but he made a play.
All of this is fair, and I am certainly not going to start bashing Tua, but you still have absolutely no idea how he will play against a good defense. He might be just as good, or he might be as bad as he looked against your 1st string defense in April. You want him to get his chance, and you have explained why, but you have to admit that you have no idea how that would work out. Is the CFP the time to find out?
That's really the big question. Once again, I find myself wishing I could be a fly on the wall at practice.
That is true. But I think the whole reason we are discussing the possible merits of playing Tua is because we have seen what Jalen does against a real good D.
It's my opinion that when Tua has played in the games we've seen him, he's looked just as good as Jalen against the weaker teams. It's true we don't know how Tua would play against a team like Auburn. But since the main thing that Jalen struggles with against the better teams is "reading coverages, going thru progressions, and completing passes" and these seem to be a "strength" rather than a weakness of Tua, I tend to believe Tua might just surprise us with how much of a difference he could make.
It's wild speculation, you may say, but I think it's based on Tua's incredible passing skills and what we haven't seen Jalen be able to do. JMO.
I know Saban will not. If Jalen struggles he may give Tua a shot late but I expect Jalen to play a solid game and we win. Valuable experience from last year.
All fair questions, but remember also there another big elephant in the room that we know nothing about (does Jalen still "win the team").
FWIW, (if all is good in the locker room) I think Jalen will start. I hope he plays well enough for us to win. But if he struggles, I'd gamble with Tua before I watched another NC possibility go down the tubes because we can't move the chains.
Exactly there was no panic. We can recall Tim Tebow making exactly the same mistake in an SEC championship game against Bama. Tua had a receiver in the back of the end zone and should have put some air on the ball for it to be caught or OB. He may never do that again in his career. It would be the nature of any quality athlete to come in with guns blazing after primarily warming the bench for a season. He will set passing records somewhere like UCLA if Bama doesn't make room for him to play. They are standing in line for his services.
And I would definitely not. Sudden change turnovers change momentum of games. I know we all want Jalen to be more aggressive and decisive but he still has to be smart also. Lets hope Jalen has learned from his mistakes and has a good game.
Those were completely different plays. Jalen's pass was ill advised, no doubt that, but he didn't throw it directly in the stomach of a defender. Jalen put the pass up where his WR had a chance to make a play. There wasn't a Bama WR near the INT Tua threw. Go back and watch the Tua INT vs UT and see if it jogs your memory..
Lol so he has to make higher risk throws than what he's currently doing (in his mind at least). The reason he isn't throwing is because he feels the throw would be too risky. That will inevitably lead to more TDs and first downs if he can execute but also a higher risk for picks if he can't.
Some people on here believe Tua would be better at making those throws ... as do I. All I hear about from anyone that meets Tua id what a great person and great leader he is so I don't think that part would be an issue.
The biggest thing that Jalen, Tua, and the entire team can do is go out and the entire team can do is go and commit themselves to being the best they can be as a team for this next game so they can win as a team. The fact remains, Jalen is our starter at QB for the 2017 season, he's done what he's needed to do to help this team win every game this season and this team only came up short once this season ... AND they are still playing in the CFPs. I'm personally hoping that he helps lead this 2017 team to another championship. The QB competition will be played out in 2018.
But what you are saying is that if Clemson and OU play their worst games, Bama can beat them without good QB play. The likelihood of Bama catching that kind of break is minimal.
Well stated. Thanks. Having said that, there's no question that Tua's passing skills are superior to Jalen's. But your overall point trumps that at this time.
What? Tua didn't throw it into his stomach! The UT linebacker raised his left hand and made an incredible one hand deflection and the ball just fell in his hands.
If Tua literally throws it with a tad of touch about a foot higher, it's a TD.
